BACKGROUND: Treatment options for refractory ascites (RA) in cirrhosis are scarce. When TIPS insertion is contraindicated, tunneled peritoneal catheters (cPeCa) offer an alternative treatment. However, cPeCa are associated with high incidences of infection-related complications. Novel PeCa embedded with silver particles (sPeCa) have been introduced to address this issue.

The pneumoperitoneum is usually a surgical emergency in neonates. It may be idiopathic in some cases like in pre‑term and low‑birth‑weight babies. These cases can be managed conservatively and surgery can be avoided. Prudent selection of cases can prevent surgical exploration of neonates. The incidence of peptic perforation has not decreased despite the successful management of Helicobacter pylori (HP), suggesting other mechanisms are involved in the pathological process. Biomarker-responsive chemiluminescence (CL) probes have been developed as a promising technology for noninvasive bioimaging of diseases. Based on the high sensitivity of CL imaging technology, a boron dipyrromethene (BODIPY)-based CL probe (BDPH1) with a hydroxypyridine group was designed for the detection of superoxide anion (O2˙-). The activation of BDPH1 is strictly O2˙- dependent, and the CL signal persists for longer than 40 h, which is significantly longer than the signal duration of traditional CL probes. Moreover, the CL probe can detect the inflammation in a murine peritonitis model.

INTRODUCTION: Acute Mesenteric Ischaemia (AMI) is a life-threatening surgical emergency, with a high mortality rate. Timely revascularisation is crucial to avoid bowel necrosis; however, once tissue becomes non-viable, surgical resection is necessary. Delineating viability is a critical challenge. Indocyanine Green (ICG) fluorescence, used to visualise tissue perfusion in elective resections, could be used to assess bowel perfusion in the emergency setting.
