Andes Hantavirus as possible cause of disease in travellers to South America.

BACKGROUND: Hantaviruses in Europe and Asia cause haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome and epidemic nephritis (mortality rate <1-15%). New strains of Hantaviruses cause Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS) from Canada to South America. Andes virus mortality rate is about 30% in Chile. METHOD: Clinical charts of 54 patients were reviewed. RESULTS: Inhalation of aerosolized urine, faeces or saliva of rodents is the principal cause of infection. The incubation period is between 8 and 43 days. The main prodromal symptoms are: myalgias, fever, fatigue, gastrointestinal disorders, dyspnoea, petec

[Haemorrhagic fever viruses, possible bioterrorist use].

The majority of haemorrhagic fever viruses are responsible for various clinical manifestations, the mutual characteristics of which are fever and haemorrhage in 5 to 70% of cases. All degrees of severity can be observed, ranging from isolated fever to multi-organ failure and death. These viruses belong to one of the following families: filoviridae, arenaviridae, bunyaviridae, and flaviviridae. They must be considered as dangerous biological weapons that could potentially be used. Most of the viruses responsible for haemorrhagic fever can be transmitted to humans through the air in spray form,

Electrocardiographic changes in patients with haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome.

The purpose of the study was to assess the incidence, type and dynamics of electrocardiography (ECG) alterations in patients with haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) according to different stages of the disease. 79 patients hospitalized at the University Hospital for Infectious Diseases in Zagreb during the large HFRS outbreak in Croatia in 2002 were retrospectively analysed. HFRS diagnosis was confirmed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. A 12-lead resting ECG was obtained. 30 (38%) patients had abnormal ECG findings, most frequently in the oliguric stage. Increased levels of urea

A pilot study for serological evidence of hantavirus infection in human population in south India.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Hantaviruses are rodent-borne viruses of the family Bunyaviridae that have been identified as aetiological agents of two human diseases, haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) and hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS). There are no reports of hantavirus infections in humans from India, hence this pilot study was undertaken to provide the serological evidence of hantavirus infections in humans in south India. METHODS: Serum samples were obtained from individuals with acute febrile illness and from voluntary blood donors, majority of whom were from south India. S

Rapid field test for detection of hantavirus antibodies in rodents.

Puumala virus (PUUV) is the causative agent of nephropathia epidemica, a mild form of haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome. PUUV is transmitted to humans via aerosolized excreta of the infected bank vole (Clethrionomys glareolus). Current methods for screening of the PUUV prevalence among bank vole populations are laborious, combining sampling in the field and subsequent analyses in the laboratory. In order to facilitate animal testing, a new serological immunochromatographic rapid test was developed. The test uses PUUV nucleocapsid protein as antigen, and it detects anti-PUUV IgG antibodies

Complete gene sequence of a human Puumala hantavirus isolate, Puumala Umeå/hu: sequence comparison and characterisation of encoded gene products.

Puumala virus is a member of the hantavirus genus in the Bunyaviridae family, and the major causative agent of haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome in Europe. This study was conducted with a human Puumala virus isolate (PUUV Umeå/hu), and contains the determination of the first complete PUUV sequence from a human source. When the relationship to other Puumala viruses was analysed, a possible RNA segment exchange between two local strains of PUUV was noticed. Furthermore, the coding regions of PUUV Umeå/hu S- and M-segments were cloned, and a large set of gene products were expressed in mamma

Tula hantavirus infection of Vero E6 cells induces apoptosis involving caspase 8 activation.

Hantaviruses are known to cause two severe human diseases: haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome and hantavirus pulmonary syndrome. The mechanisms of pathogenesis of these two diseases are progressively becoming understood. Recently, two hantaviruses, Hantaan and Prospect Hill were reported to cause programmed cell death of Vero E6 cells. This study shows that Tula hantavirus (TULV) infection efficiently triggers an apoptotic programme in infected Vero E6 cells, and that the replication of TULV is required for the activation of caspase 3 and the cleavage of poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase, two m

[Emerging viral zoonoses: hantavirus infections].

Hantaviruses are rodent-borne agents belonging to the Bunyaviridae family. These viruses, which are found throughout Europe, Asia and the Americas, are maintained by different species of rodents, in which they produce chronic, inapparent infections. Humans become infected through contact with urine, saliva or faeces from infected rodents, mainly via the aerosol route. In humans, clinical disease occurs in the form of two major syndromes: haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) or hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS). Haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome mainly occurs in Europe and Asia

Genetic characterisation of a Hantavirus isolated from a laboratory-acquired infection.

Seoul (SEO) viruses belong to the Hantavirus genus (family Bunyaviridae), cause the moderate form of haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome, and have been associated with laboratory-acquired infections in many countries. To investigate the pedigree of an isolate, designated IR461, which was obtained from a laboratory-acquired infection in a UK research institute, we determined the nucleotide sequences of the small (S) and medium (M) genome segments. In addition, we determined the sequences of the S segments of two Chinese isolates (R22 and L99) and an American isolate (Tchoupitoulas [TCH]). Th

Prevalence of antibodies against hantaviruses among the adult population of the Czech Republic.

At least three hantavirus genospecies are circulating among wild rodents in Europe: Puumala, Dobrava and Tula, the two first being of clinical significance for humans as possible causative agents of haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome. As many as 710 adult individuals randomly selected from 12 regions of the Czech Republic were screened for the presence of antibodies against hantaviruses. Commercial sets with Hantaan and Puumala antigens were used for this purpose. Five subjects showed IgG reactivity to Hantaan-like virus (Dobrava) and one subject tested positive for both IgG and IgM antibo

Hantavirus infections in Europe.

Hantaviruses are enveloped RNA viruses each carried by a specific rodent species. Three hantaviruses, Puumala, Dobrava, and Saaremaa viruses, are known to cause haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome. In Europe. Puumala causes a generally mild disease, nephropathia epidemica, which presents most commonly with fever, headache, gastrointestinal symptoms, impaired renal function, and blurred vision, whereas Dobrava infections often also have haemorrhagic complications. There are few available data about the clinical picture of confirmed Saaremaa infections, but epidemiological evidence suggests t

[Epidemiological surveillance on natural-borne infections in the Ulyanovsk region].

The analysis of natural foci of haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) and tick-borne borreliosis on the territory of the Ulyanovsk region is presented. Reduced rat control interventions result in a wide spread of these and other infections with natural focality. Monitoring of natural foci of HFRS, tick-borne borreliosis and arbovirus infections, their typing and determination of main reservoirs are the most promising among epidemiological surveillance methods.

Increased glomerular permeability in patients with nephropathia epidemica caused by Puumala hantavirus.

BACKGROUND: Nephropathia epidemica (NE) is the Scandinavian type of haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome. Usually heavy transient proteinuria is present at the onset of the disease. METHODS: We investigated glomerular permeability in eight patients with acute NE and in eight healthy controls. Six patients were followed for 1 year. The glomerular filtration rate (GFR) was determined by inulin clearance and effective renal plasma flow (ERPF) by para-aminohippurate clearance. RESULTS: GFR and ERPF were significantly reduced in NE patients during the acute phase compared with those in controls
