Hantaviruses are widespread zoonotic pathogens found around the globe. Depending on their geographical location, hantaviruses can cause two human syndromes, haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) or hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS). HPS and HFRS have many commonalities amongst which excessive activation of immune cells is a prominent feature. Hantaviruses replicate in endothelial cells (ECs), the major battlefield of hantavirus-induced pathogenesis, without causing cytopathic effects. This indicates that a misdirected response of human immune cells to hantaviruses is causing damage.

Background: Haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) is characterized by an uncontrolled cytokine storm that causes vascular leakage and kidney injury. The cytokine interleukin 34 (IL-34) enhances proliferation and differentiation of myeloid cells and secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines, which is involved in the pathogenesis of some inflammatory and infectious diseases, including acute kidney injury. To date, however, the role of IL-34 in patients with HFRS is unclear. This study aims to determine the plasma IL-34 levels of HFRS patients and discuss the possible effects of IL-34 in th

Shandong Province is an area of China with a high incidence of haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS); however, the general epidemic trend of HFRS in Shandong remains unclear. Therefore, we established a mathematical model to predict the incidence trend of HFRS and used Joinpoint regression analysis, a generalised additive model (GAM), and other methods to evaluate the data. Incidence data from the first half of 2018 were included in a range predicted by a modified sum autoregressive integrated moving average-support vector machine (ARIMA-SVM) combination model. The highest incidence of

Viral haemorrhagic fevers (VHFs) are a group of infectious, devastating and severe diseases caused by enveloped single-stranded RNA viruses. The endemicity, emergence or re-emergence of different VHF viruses and lack of vaccines and antiviral therapy for most VHFs result in a significant global threat. Most VHF viruses are restricted to specific parts of the world, and the dramatic expansion of their geographical distribution beyond their original habitats would greatly affect global public health. In the past few decades alone, several outbreaks have affected the Middle East, a part of the wo

In-depth knowledge on the mechanisms that maintain infection by a zoonotic pathogen in an animal reservoir is the key to predicting and preventing transmission to humans. The Puumala orthohantavirus (PUUV), the most prevalent orthohantavirus in Western Europe, causes a mild form of haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) in humans. In France, this endemic illness affects the north-eastern part of the country. We conducted a 4-year capture-mark-recapture study in a bank vole population, combined with molecular analyses, to explore the epidemiological situation of PUUV in Alsace, a French

In 2017 Zagreb faced the largest outbreak of haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) to date. We investigated to describe the extent of the outbreak and identify risk factors for infection. We compared laboratory-confirmed cases of Hantavirus infection in Zagreb residents with the onset of illness after 1 January 2017, with individually matched controls from the same household or neighbourhood. We calculated adjusted matched odds ratios (amOR) using conditional logistic regression. During 2017, 104 cases were reported: 11-81 years old (median 37) and 71% (73) male. Compared with 104 cont

Haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) is transmitted to humans mainly by rodents and this transmission could be easily influenced by meteorological factors. Given the long-term changes in climate associated with global climate change, it is important to better identify the effects of meteorological factors of HFRS in epidemic areas. Shandong province is one of the most seriously suffered provinces of HFRS in China. Daily HFRS data and meteorological data from 2007 to 2012 in Shandong province were applied. Quasi-Poisson regression with the distributed lag non-linear model was used to e

Zhejiang Province is one of the six provinces in China that has the highest incidence of haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS). Data on HFRS cases in Zhejiang Province from January 2007 to July 2017 were obtained from the China Information Network System of Disease Prevention and Control. Joinpoint regression analysis was used to observe the trend of the incidence rate of HFRS. The monthly incidence rate was predicted by autoregressive integrated moving average(ARIMA) models. Spatial autocorrelation analysis was performed to detect geographic clusters. A multivariate time series model

BACKGROUND: Variability exists in all biological signals, and in human gait research it has been found to be an indicator of neuromuscular system functioning. Detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA), a nonlinear method used to quantify the strength of long-range correlations in the temporal structure of stride-to-stride gait variability, has revealed gait differences in certain populations that are not observed with traditional linear measures like standard deviation. Previous research suggests that humans can adapt gait patterns to match different variability structures through sensory cues, suc

BACKGROUND: In Europe, bank voles (Myodes glareolus) are widely distributed and can transmit Puumala virus (PUUV) to humans, which causes a mild to moderate form of haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome, called nephropathia epidemica. Uncovering the link between host and virus dynamics can help to prevent human PUUV infections in the future. Bank voles were live trapped three times a year in 2010-2013 in three woodland plots in each of four regions in Germany. Bank vole population density was estimated and blood samples collected to detect PUUV specific antibodies.
RESULTS: We demonstrated t

BACKGROUND: Intravenous ribavirin has been reported to be an effective treatment for haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) caused by Hantaan virus in Asia. However, its therapeutic benefits for HFRS caused by Puumala virus (PUUV) in Europe are still unknown.
METHODS: A randomized, open-label study of efficacy and safety of intravenous ribavirin in the treatment of HFRS was conducted in the European part of Russia. Seventy-three patients with suspected HFRS within 4 d of the onset of the disease were randomized to receive either intravenous ribavirin (33 mg/kg, followed by 16 mg/kg giv

Haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) is characterised by an uncontrolled immune response that causes vascular leakage. Adiponectin (APN) is an adipocytokine involved in prorevascularisation and immunomodulation. To investigate the possible effects of APN in the pathogenesis of HFRS, total and high molecular weight (HMW) APN levels in the plasma of patients with HFRS were quantified using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Compared with those in healthy controls, the plasma total and HMW APN levels in patients were elevated to different degrees from the fever onset and remained

Hantaviruses pose a public health concern worldwide causing haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) and hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS). Puumala virus (PUUV) is the most prevalent hantavirus in Central and Northern Europe, and causes a mild form of HFRS, also known as nephropathia epidemica (NE). In nature, the main host of PUUV is the bank vole (Myodes glareolus), and transmission to humans occurs through inhalation of aerosols from rodent excreta. Nephropathia epidemica is particularly prevalent in Nordic countries, however, few studies of PUUV have been performed in Norway. The ai

BACKGROUND: Approximately 2 million doses of vaccine against haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) have been used annually in China. However, there were limited studies focused on persistence of immune responses to HFRS vaccine in healthy adults. A phase 4, multicentre, open trial has been undertaken to assess antibody persistence after HFRS vaccination of healthy adolescents and adults aged 16-60 years.
METHODS: The vaccine was administered as a three-dose series at 0, 2 weeks and 6 months, including two primary doses and one booster dose. Anti-hantavirus IgG antibodies were measured

BACKGROUND: Puumala hantavirus (PUUV) causes haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome characterized by thrombocytopenia, capillary leakage and acute kidney injury (AKI) with proteinuria and haematuria. Although the typical histologic lesion is acute tubulointerstitial nephritis, the amount of glomerular proteinuria predicts the severity of upcoming AKI. Here, we studied the associations of haematuria and proteinuria with the severity of emerging AKI, thrombocytopenia and markers of coagulation and fibrinolysis in PUUV infection.
METHODS: We examined 205 consecutive patients treated for serologi

Hantaviruses are RNA viruses of the family Bunyaviridae. Their hosts are mammals of the orders rodents (voles, rats, mice), insectivores (shrews, moles), and chiroptera (bats). Hantaviruses are present in many areas of Europe, the Americas, Asia, and Africa. In the Czech Republic, the occurrence of five species of hantaviruses has been reported (Dobrava/Belgrade, Puumala, Tula, Seewis, and Asikkala), with the first three of them causing human diseases. Although the course of hantavirus infections can be very serious, there is a low awareness of these diseases, even among health professionals,

Hantaviruses are a group of antigenically distinct viruses carried out in rodents and insectivores. Humans are accidental hosts and get infected by aerosols generated from contaminated urine, faeces and saliva of infected rodents. Hantaviruses are identified as aetiological agents of two human diseases, haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome and hantavirus pulmonary syndrome. Hantavirus causing pulmonary renal disease has rarely been reported in children in India. Hantavirus infection is uncommon under the age of 12 years. We report a 9-year-old girl from Mumbai, India with fever, bilateral pl

From 2004 to 2014, 106 cases of Human haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome were notified in Montenegro, with a peak in 2014. Most of the cases occurred in summer, in the North-east and Central Montenegro, a hilly/mountainous area, that provides suitable habitats for the main rodent carriers. Cases were mainly males (71) and exposures were often working outdoor or spending time visiting mountains and lakes. Incidence correlated with average annual temperature increase and average annual rainfalls decrease, but not with land cover. Environment and climate effects on HFRS in Montenegro need fur

As part of further investigations into three linked haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) cases in Wales and England, 21 rats from a breeding colony in Cherwell, and three rats from a household in Cheltenham were screened for hantavirus. Hantavirus RNA was detected in either the lungs and/or kidney of 17/21 (81%) of the Cherwell rats tested, higher than previously detected by blood testing alone (7/21, 33%), and in the kidneys of all three Cheltenham rats. The partial L gene sequences obtained from 10 of the Cherwell rats and the three Cheltenham rats were identical to each other and t
