To investigate whether steroids influence the course and prognosis of acute sarcoidosis (Löfgren syndrome) 35 patients who developed this disease during the period 1960-1970 were examined and retrospectively divided into two groups, one of which had received steroids and the other not. The hypothesis that Paget's disease of bone is a low grade neoplastic process led us to use the cytotoxic antibiotic mithramycin in its treatment. The dramatic effects observed on the serum calcium and alkaline phosphatase, and urinary hydroxyproline are compatible with the concept that mithramycin is primarily toxic to osteoclasts. Subjective and objective clinical effects establish this agent as useful in the treatment of Paget's disease despite its observed toxicity to other organ systems.

We studied the effects of prolonged ingestion of melatonin, 1 g per day, on skin color and the serum levels of pituitary hormones in 5 human subjects with hyperpigmented skin. Laying pullets were fed a diet supplemented with three percent of either high-erucic acid rapeseed (HEAR) oil or low-erucic acid rapeseed (LEAR) oil for 39 weeks. A new analysis system for the partial thromboplastin test (Cephotest) has been applied to 40 subjects (normal, suffering from nutritional toxic hepatopathy, chronic hepatopathy and cirrhosis of the liver). Although polyvinyl chloride has been produced from vinyl chlride monomer for more than 40 years, recognition of toxicity among vinyl chloride polymerization workers is more recent.
