Prevalence of Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C Viral Infections and Their Associated Factors among Diabetic Patients Visiting Debre Tabor Referral Hospital, Northwest Ethiopia, 2021: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Viral hepatitis is a global public health problem that affects millions of people each year, causing disability and death. Hepatitis B and C viruses are the most common causes of viral hepatitis and are associated with chronic liver disease, cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma. The primary site of infection for these viruses is the liver, the primary site of hormone and glucose metabolism closely linked to diabetes mellitus (DM), which is associated with increased morbidity and mortality worldwide. As a result, assessing the coexistence of viral hepatitis and DM could be import

Development of Molecular-Based Screening Test for Hepatitis B Virus in Human Plasma Samples.

Despite regular administration of hepatitis B virus (HBV) vaccine in several countries, the mortality rate associated with HBV remains significant. The antiviral medications available for the treatment of HBV infection do not suffice for the serious complications related to chronic HBV infection. Additionally, the serological tests fail to detect early viral replication preventing early treatment response. Recently, many studies have demonstrated the significant advantages of loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) over serological testing and polymerase chain reaction (PCR), for the rap

Anti-hepatitis B virus activities of natural products and their antiviral mechanisms.

Chronic hepatitis B (CHB) infections caused by the hepatitis B virus (HBV) continue to pose a significant global public health challenge. Currently, the approved treatments for CHB are limited to interferon and nucleos(t)ide analogs, both of which have their limitations, and achieving a complete cure remains an elusive goal. Therefore, the identification of new therapeutic targets and the development of novel antiviral strategies are of utmost importance. Natural products (NPs) constitute a class of substances known for their diverse chemical structures, wide-ranging biological activities, and

Effects of entecavir and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate on the incidence and severity of COVID-19 in patients with chronic hepatitis B.

BACKGROUND: Whether different anti-hepatitis B virus (HBV) drugs have different effects on COVID-19 is controversial. We aimed to evaluate the incidence of COVID-19 in chronic hepatitis B (CHB) patients receiving anti-HBV treatment, and to compare the impact of entecavir (ETV) and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF) on the severity of COVID-19. METHODS: CHB outpatients were enrolled from December 2022 to February 2023. Questionnaires were used to collect whether subjects were currently or previously had COVID-19 within the past 2 months, and the information of symptoms, duration, and severity

HLA-DR genetic polymorphisms and hepatitis B virus mutations affect the risk of hepatocellular carcinoma in Han Chinese population.

BACKGROUND: Human leucocyte antigen (HLA)-DR plays a crucial role in the immune response against hepatitis B virus (HBV). We aimed to investigate the associations of HLA-DR single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) with the generation of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC)-related HBV mutations. The effects of HLA-DR SNPs and their interactions with HBV mutations on HCC risks were also determined. METHODS: Five HLA-DR SNPs (rs3135363, rs9268644, rs35445101, rs24755213, and rs984778) were genotyped in 792 healthy controls, 586 chronic hepatitis B (CHB) patients, 536 liver cirrhosis (LC) patients, and

Regression of Liver Fibrosis in Patients on Hepatitis B Therapy Is Associated With Decreased Liver-Related Events.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Liver fibrosis in patients with chronic hepatitis B can regress with successful antiviral therapy. However, the long-term clinical benefits of fibrosis regression have not been fully elucidated. This study investigated the association between biopsy-proven fibrosis regression by predominantly progressive, indeterminate, and predominantly regressive (P-I-R) score and liver-related events (LREs) in chronic hepatitis B patients. METHODS: Patients with on-treatment liver biopsy and significant fibrosis/cirrhosis (Ishak stage ≥3) were included in this analysis. Fibrosis regressi

NSUN2-mediated m5C modification of HBV RNA positively regulates HBV replication.

Chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is a major cause of liver cirrhosis and liver cancer, despite strong prevention and treatment efforts. The study of the epigenetic modification of HBV has become a research hotspot, including the N6-methyladenosine (m6A) modification of HBV RNA, which plays complex roles in the HBV life cycle. In addition to m6A modification, 5-methylcytosine (m5C) is another major modification of eukaryotic mRNA. In this study, we explored the roles of m5C methyltransferase and demethyltransferase in the HBV life cycle. The results showed that m5C methyltransferase NS

DAA-mediated HCV cure reduces HIV DNA levels in HCV/HIV coinfected people.

Antiretroviral therapy (ART) for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) can control virus replication and prolong the life of people living with HIV (PLWH). However, the virus remains dormant within immune cells in what is called the HIV reservoir. Furthermore, 2.3 million PLWH are also coinfected with hepatitis C virus (HCV) and are at risk of developing chronic liver disease and cancer. HCV treatment with direct acting antivirals (DAA) can completely cure the infection in more than 95% of treated individuals and improve their long-term health outcomes. In this study, we investigated how HCV trea

Patient Preferences and Their Influence on Chronic Hepatitis B-A Review.

Chronic hepatitis B (CHB) is a common chronic viral infectious disease that requires long-term treatment to control the condition and prevent complications. To standardize treatment regimens for CHB, professional associations have established relevant guidelines, but they have often overlooked patient preferences. Historically, in the treatment process, medical decisions were predominantly made by physicians or health care administrators, with limited patient involvement, leading to the neglect of patient preferences. Patient attitudes, expectations, and needs are all influenced by their prefe

IL-2 produced by HBV-specific T cells as a biomarker of viral control and predictor of response to PD-1 therapy across clinical phases of chronic hepatitis B.

BACKGROUND: There are no immunological biomarkers that predict control of chronic hepatitis B (CHB). The lack of immune biomarkers raises concerns for therapies targeting PD-1/PD-L1 because they have the potential for immune-related adverse events. Defining specific immune functions associated with control of HBV replication could identify patients likely to respond to anti-PD-1/PD-L1 therapies and achieve a durable functional cure. METHODS: We enrolled immunotolerant, HBeAg+ immune-active (IA+), HBeAg- immune-active (IA-), inactive carriers, and functionally cured patients to test ex vivo PD

False-Positive Liquid Biopsy Assays Secondary to Overlapping Aberrant Methylation from Non-Cancer Disease States.

INTRODUCTION: Liquid biopsies are increasingly being adopted in the care of patients with cancer. Not only in patients with metastatic disease but the utility is also being recognized in earlier phases of the journey of a patient with cancer. More recently, methylated platforms are offering another lens of looking at the same question more so in minimal residual disease (MRD) and early detection settings. While false positives secondary to clonal hematopoiesis of indeterminate potential (CHIP) are recognized as one entity to consider when interpreting these assays, and advanced CHIP filtering
