Interleukin-6 (IL-6) is a pleiotropic cytokine that coordinates innate and adaptive immunity and maintains tissue homeostasis during infection and inflammation. Although transient IL-6 production is essential for host defense, dysregulated or sustained IL-6 activity contributes to immunopathology across infectious and inflammatory diseases. Dengue virus (DENV) infection provides an important context in which this balance may become disrupted. Elevated circulating IL-6 levels are associated with endothelial dysfunction, vascular leakage, coagulopathy, and severe dengue; however, the mechanisms

Dengue remains a major public health challenge in tropical regions, where viral genetic diversity, vector ecology and human mobility contribute to recurrent outbreaks. In 2024, Brazil experienced its largest recorded dengue epidemic, with intense transmission across the Northeast region. This study characterizes the epidemiological, genomic and phylogeographic features of dengue virus (DENV) circulation during the 2024 outbreak in Alagoas, northeastern Brazil. Of 6102 suspected cases analysed by molecular diagnostics, 1607 (26.3%) were confirmed as DENV infections. Epidemiological analyses rev

BACKGROUND: Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV) is a tick-borne zoonotic pathogen widely distributed across Africa, Asia, and Europe. Human infection occurs through tick bites or contact with infected animal tissues. In Tanzania, evidence of human exposure exists, but data on population-level seroprevalence and associated behavioral risk factors remain limited. This study assessed human CCHFV seroprevalence and identified demographic, behavioral, and environmental factors associated with prior exposure in livestock-keeping communities in southcentral Tanzania.
METHODS: A community-b

Dengue remains a significant public health challenge in Bangladesh, with considerable variation in disease burden and mortality. This study aimed to assess how dengue case fatality rates (CFRs) had varied across months, seasons, and geographic regions of Bangladesh. A retrospective observational study was conducted from January 2021 to December 2025 using surveillance data obtained from the Directorate General of Health Services, Bangladesh (DGHS). Descriptive statistical analyses were performed to estimate dengue CFR. Univariate and multivariable logistic regression analyses were conducted to

Dengue fever (DF) remains one of the most significant mosquito-borne diseases in tropical and subtropical regions, particularly in Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC), Vietnam. This study evaluates the performance of Artificial Intelligence (AI) models, including Machine Learning and Deep Learning approaches to forecast weekly district-level DF cases and to identify the optimal predictive model. DF notifications and meteorological data (temperature, humidity, rainfall) from 24 districts in HCMC (2015-2022) were standardized to epidemiological weeks and spatially interpolated using Inverse Distance Weighti

INTRODUCTION: Dengue is an infectious disease transmitted by mosquitoes that is rapidly spreading in West Africa, particularly in Côte d’Ivoire. Despite the efforts of health institutions, the disease remains underdiagnosed and difficult to control, particularly in urban and peri-urban areas such as Abidjan. This study focused on Wassakara, a disadvantaged neighborhood in the Yopougon district of Abidjan, to assess adults’ knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) regarding dengue prevention.
METHOD: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 316 randomly select

On 4 September 2025, the Ministry of Public Health, Hygiene and Social Welfare officially declared the 16th Ebola disease outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). This outbreak ended on 1 December 2025 and occurred in Bulape Health Zone, Kasaï Province, an area with limited access to appropriate healthcare facilities and resources. Here, we describe the probable index patient and molecular investigations of samples obtained from six suspected patients from the initial outbreak phase. We identified Orthoebolavirus zairense (EBOV) in five samples from different patients. In additi

BACKGROUND: Identifying transmission hotspots associated with micro-clustering patterns at the early stages of epidemics is helpful to characterize spatiotemporal spread of infectious diseases. However, standard methods with statistical validation to establish a dynamic warning system for emerging infectious diseases are lacking. We therefore aimed to integrate a geographic information system-based surveillance system and data-driven methods to identify transmission hotspots, thereby assisting decision-makers to implement appropriate policies at the early stages of epidemics.
METHODS: We prop

BACKGROUND: The expansion of dengue vaccination strategies in Brazil, including the introduction of the Butantan dengue vaccine (DV), has reinforced the importance of post-marketing safety surveillance. We aimed to characterize reporting patterns of adverse events following immunization (AEFIs) and immunization errors associated with dengue vaccines in Brazil.
METHODS: We conducted a nationwide retrospective observational study using records of AEFIs associated with dengue vaccines reported to the Brazilian Ministry of Health through June 2026. AEFIs were classified as serious or non-serious

INTRODUCTION: Dengue virus (DENV) is an emerging public health threat in Africa, where its impact is underestimated due to nonspecific clinical manifestations and restricted diagnostic capabilities. In Liberia, laboratory-confirmed cases of DENV were initially recorded in an urban febrile surveillance study (2018-2020), yet severe or fatal outcomes had not been previously reported. This paper reports the first laboratory-confirmed fatal dengue case and its implications for national surveillance and policy in Liberia.
CASE REPORT: On February 2, 2026, a 38-year-old Liberian man arrived at J. J

The time-varying effective reproduction number, Rt, characterizes the dynamics of infectious disease transmission at a given point in time. For mosquito-borne diseases, there has been growing interest in estimating Rt for spatially targeted vector control interventions. However, systematic evaluations of Rt estimation accuracy for mosquito-borne diseases are lacking: a concerning phenomenon given that errors in Rt estimation at fine spatial scales could be amplified by human mobility-driven transmission and high rates of asymptomatic cases. We systematically evaluated the accuracy of popular R

Hantavirus fevers (HF) are caused by pathogenic orthohantaviruses and are classified into two clinical forms: hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS), reported in Eurasia, and hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS), reported in the Americas. HF are characterised by an acute course with predominant involvement of internal organs: HFRS is mainly associated with kidney damage, while HPS is characterised by severe lung injury. Both diseases may also affect the central nervous and endocrine systems. In addition, hantavirus fevers are marked by severe complications during the acute phase and a pro

BACKGROUND: Aedes aegypti is the primary vector of dengue and other arboviruses whose global incidence continues to rise. In response, releases of Aedes aegypti infected with the wMel strain of Wolbachia pipientis have been promoted as a sustainable, transmission-blocking strategy to curb arboviral disease.
OBJECTIVES: This study was undertaken to reassess the real-world performance of wMel-Wolbachia interventions, evaluate their epidemiological impact and durability under diverse field conditions.
METHODS: Evidence from peer-reviewed publications, program documentation, and routine surveill

In April 2026, several cases of severe respiratory illnesses were reported aboard the cruise ship MV Hondius during its voyage from Argentina. Subsequent laboratory testing identified Andes virus (ANDV), a hantavirus subtype, with rare but documented human-to-human transmission. Although hantavirus infections are uncommon, both hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS) and hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) are associated with substantial morbidity and mortality. Their rapid progression and potential need for intensive respiratory support continue to pose important challenges for emergency

BACKGROUND: On May 15, 2026, WHO declared a Bundibugyo virus (BDBV) outbreak in Ituri Province, DR Congo with an estimated index case on April 1, 2026 (6-week pre-declaration interval). By May 24, DR Congo reported 906 suspected cases (105 confirmed and ten confirmed deaths) across three provinces. Uganda reported seven confirmed cases (three imported; four locally acquired including three health-care workers; case-fatality ratio 14%). WHO declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern on May 17, 2026; Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention declared a Public Health Emer

Dengue virus (DENV) infection can result in outcomes ranging from subclinical disease to life-threatening illness, yet the antibody features mediating protection in humans remain poorly defined. Dengue virus envelope protein (E) forms homodimers on the virion surface and elicits both neutralizing and non-neutralizing antibodies from IgG-secreting cells (IgG-SC). How the developing antibody response at the monoclonal level contributes to protection is unknown. We profiled single IgG-SC responses in a Cambodian pediatric cohort by measuring affinity and serotype cross-reactivity of secreted anti

Dengue commonly causes thrombocytopenia, but platelet count alone may not reflect marrow thrombopoiesis. Immature platelet fraction (IPF) is a potential marker of platelet regeneration, though longitudinal data are limited. We thus aimed to evaluate whether Day 1 IPF predicts subsequent platelet recovery trajectory and to describe longitudinal trends in clinical, biochemical and platelet indices. This was a retrospective longitudinal analytical study conducted at a tertiary care hospital in Western Maharashtra, India. Six hundred and sixty-seven patients with confirmed dengue, with platelet co

As climate change increases temperatures, additional warmth combines with rainfall and humidity to enhance conditions for mosquito populations to thrive. Greater spread of Anopheles and Aedes vectors increases the risk of transmission of the world's most prevalent mosquito-borne infectious diseases, malaria and dengue. Yet the impacts of climate drivers on disease transmission are complex: Relationships are nonlinear, effects are seasonal, and there is substantial local variability. Further complexity is added by the many nonclimate factors that influence disease transmission, including moveme
