Association of Oncogenic Viral Infections With Cardiovascular Risk and Health Outcomes: A Cross-Sectional Study in South Asian Adults.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a major global health issue. Chronic infections with oncogenic viruses such as human papillomavirus (HPV), hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepatitis C virus (HCV), Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), and human T-cell lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1) may increase cardiovascular risk. Evidence from high-burden regions, such as Pakistan and India, is limited. This study examines the association between oncogenic viral infections and cardiovascular health in South Asian adults. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted in a community-based clinic in Pakistan a

Occult hepatitis B: prevalence and clinical significance. Role in liver pathology and in viral coinfections.

The review examines issues related to occult hepatitis B virus infection (OBI), which occurs at a late stage of chronic hepatitis B (CHB) after HBsAg clearance. In clinical practice, OBI is detected by the absence of HBsAg and the presence of antibodies to HBcAg in the blood serum and is often referred to as «past» or «resolved» hepatitis B. However, hepatitis B virus (HBV) DNA remains in liver cells, is poorly detected by routine diagnostic methods, and cannot be removed by existing therapies. Data on the prevalence of OBI vary, but it is found in all regions of the world, much more often in

Unstable Recompensation: An Intermediate Subtype in Patients With HBV-Related Decompensated Cirrhosis.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Recent studies show that patients with hepatitis B virus (HBV)-related decompensated cirrhosis who achieve recompensation can still experience further decompensation, suggesting that recompensation status can change over time. This study aimed to classify patterns of recompensation and charaterize the clinical differences among these subgroups. METHODS: Eligible patients with HBV-related decompensated cirrhosis were enrolled from two cohorts. Clinical characteristics and complications were assessed every 6 months for up to 5 years following their first episode of decompens

Protective Role of the Sodium Taurocholate Cotransporting Polypeptide S267F Variant Against Hepatitis B Virus Infection and Cirrhosis in the Vietnamese Population.

The sodium taurocholate cotransporting polypeptide (NTCP) serves as both a hepatic bile acid transporter and an essential entry receptor for hepatitis B virus (HBV). The S267F (rs2296651) polymorphism in the NTCP gene has been associated with reduced HBV susceptibility in East Asian populations. However, its clinical relevance in the Vietnamese population remains underexplored. We investigated the association between the NTCP S267F variant and clinical outcomes in 743 Vietnamese individuals, including 429 HBV-infected patients and 314 healthy controls (HCs). HBV genotyping, NTCP variant screen

Quantifying the Contribution of Viral Hepatitis Control Policies and Improvement of Hepatitis C Treatment in Japan during 2000-2030 based on Simulation Modelling.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infections are major causes of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in Japan. The Japanese government has implemented various countermeasures since the early 2000s, including expanded screening and effective antiviral treatments. Evaluating the long-term impact of these policies is essential for guiding future strategies. METHODS: We developed a Markov model-based simulation to estimate the annual transition of HBV/HCV carriers, disease progression, and HCC-related outcomes in Japan from 2000 to 2030. Five policy scenarios we

Chronic Hepatitis B: Current Management and Future Directions.

Chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection remains a major global health burden, affecting millions and contributing significantly to liver-related morbidity and mortality. While substantial progress has been made in elucidating the virology and natural history of HBV, the management of chronic hepatitis B (CHB) continues to present clinical challenges. The development of potent nucleos(t)ide analogs and pegylated interferon has improved viral suppression and delayed disease progression, yet a definitive cure remains elusive due to the persistence of covalently closed circular DNA (cccDNA). Role of Immune Cells in Hepatitis B Virus and Associated Sequelae.

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) chronically infects 250 million people worldwide, making it a primary risk factor for progressive liver disease. The virus itself is not responsible for liver damage. HBV can replicate at very high levels and produces large amounts of viral antigen, but this does not lead to hepatocyte death or liver inflammation. Instead, pathogenesis of chronic hepatitis B (CHB) is driven by the interaction between the host immune system and the virus. In chronically infected individuals, the HBV-specific immune response is dysfunctional and not able to clear the infection. This inabi

The interplay between hepatitis B virus and antitumor drugs in the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remains a lethal global health burden, with chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection constituting a primary etiological driver. Most patients present with advanced disease, where systemic pharmacotherapies-chemotherapy, molecularly targeted agents, and immunotherapies-form the cornerstone of treatment. Despite therapeutic advances, outcomes for HBV-positive advanced HCC patients remain suboptimal. Critically, certain chemotherapeutic agents directly promote HBV replication, precipitating viral reactivation that may cause treatment interruption, fulminant hepatit

Utility of Serum HBV RNA Measurement During Nucleoside/Nucleotide Analog Therapy in Chronic Hepatitis B Patients.

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) particles containing HBV RNA are secreted into the blood; these RNA-containing particles are non-infectious byproducts of the replication cycle and are distinct from mature, DNA-containing virions. The proportion of these particles increases during nucleoside/nucleotide analog therapy, but the clinical significance of serum HBV RNA remains unclear. We evaluated longitudinal changes in serum HBV RNA and their association with the antiviral efficacy of nucleoside/nucleotide analog therapy. Eighty-six patients with chronic HBV infection (baseline HBV DNA ≥ 5.0 Log IU/mL an

Discovery of N-Hydroxypyridinedione-Based Inhibitors of HBV RNase H: Design, Synthesis, and Extended SAR Studies.

Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) continues to pose a significant global health challenge, with over 254 million chronic infections and current therapies being non-curative, necessitating lifelong treatment. The HBV ribonuclease H (RNase H) is essential during HBV reverse transcription by cleaving the viral pregenomic RNA after it has been copied into the (-) polarity DNA strand, enabling the viral polymerase to synthesize the (+) DNA strand. Although RNase H inhibition terminates viral replication and thus viral infectiveness, its targeting as an HBV treatment is unexploited. Its catalytic site contain

A Highly Sensitive Silicon Nanowire Array Field Effect Transistor Biosensor for Detecting HBV-DNA and AFP.

Chronic hepatitis B poses a serious threat to human health and life, and early diagnosis is essential to improving patient cure rates. Hepatitis B virus (HBV) and Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) are two key biomarkers for diagnosing chronic hepatitis B. In this study, we propose a silicon nanowire array field effect transistor (SiNW-array FET) biosensor that enables highly sensitive, real-time, and low-cost joint detection of both HBV and AFP. The SiNW-array FET is fabricated using traditional micro-nano fabrication techniques such as self-limiting oxidation and anisotropic etching, and its morphology

Interferon-α for Immune Modulation in Chronic Hepatitis B Toward Functional Cure.

Chronic hepatitis B (CHB) remains a major global health challenge, largely due to the persistence of covalently closed circular DNA (cccDNA) and impaired host immunity. Interferon-α (IFN-α), a key antiviral cytokine, not only directly restricts HBV replication but also orchestrates innate and adaptive immune responses. This review summarizes current advances in IFN-α-mediated immune regulation, highlighting its effects across diverse immune cell populations. Evidence indicates that IFN-α can reprogram immune responses to promote viral clearance, although clinical efficacy is limited by modest

Molecular Epidemiology of Hepatitis E Virus in Hungary (2018-2025): Emergence of Rare Subtypes and First Detection of HEV-4 in Central Europe.

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is an emerging cause of viral hepatitis in Europe, with increasing recognition in immunocompromised patients. While genotype 3 (HEV-3) is most prevalent in the region, molecular epidemiology data from Hungary have been limited. HEV strains from 118 RNA-positive patients diagnosed between 2018 and 2025 were genotyped. Next-generation sequencing yielded near-complete HEV genomes for 76 samples. HEV-3 was dominant (98.3%). Subtype 3a was the most common (34.7%), followed by 3c, 3f, and 3e. Rare subtypes (3g, 3h, 3i, 3m, 3ra) and HEV-4b were detected for the first time in H

Vertical Transmission of Hepatitis B and C-Then and Now-A Comprehensive Literature Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: According to a WHO global hepatitis report, the global prevalence of hepatitis B in 2022 was 254 million and for hepatitis C it was 50 million. The estimated number of people newly infected by viral hepatitis declined from 3 million in 2019 to 2.2 million in 2022. Of these, 1.2 million are hepatitis B infections and nearly 1.0 million are hepatitis C infections. Regarding vertical transmission, it is estimated that 4 to 5 million children are infected worldwide every year from HBV-positive mothers. The United States declared that hepatitis C is the commonest chronic blood-borne inf
