Lipids are essential for animal development and physiological homeostasis. Dysregulation of lipid metabolism results in various developmental defects and diseases, such as obesity and fatty liver. Usually, lipids are stored in lipid droplets, which are the multifunctional lipid storage organelles in cells. Lipid droplets vary in size and number in different tissues and under different conditions. It has been reported that lipid droplets are tightly controlled through regulation of its biogenesis and degradation. In Drosophila melanogaster, the oenocyte is an important tissue for lipid metaboli

Phytic acid (PA) or myoinositol intake was recently reported by our group to suppress hepatic lipogenic gene expression and modulate gut microbiota in rats fed a high-sucrose diet (HSC). The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of PA and dietary fat level on fatty liver and gut microbiota in rats fed an HSC diet. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were fed a high-fat (HF), HSC diet or a low-fat (LF), HSC diet with or without 1.02% sodium PA for 12 days. Hepatic lipid levels, hepatic enzyme activity, and expression of the enzymes and transcriptional factors related to lipid metabolism, cecal o

Excessive alcohol consumption can increase gut permeability and alter the gut bacterial communities, influencing the pathogenesis of several disorders including alcoholic liver disease, endotoxemia, and systemic inflammation. Although recent studies have highlighted a pivotal role for gut microbiota in alcohol metabolism and alcoholic liver injury, the results have primarily been obtained from binge models treated with physiologically acute dose of alcohol. We sought to investigate the effect of low-dose (0.8 g/kg/day) and short-term (one week) consumption of alcohol on changes in gut microbio

This study aimed to characterize the impact of dietary copper on the biochemical and hepatic metabolite changes associated with fructose toxicity in a Wistar rat model of fructose-induced liver disease. Twenty-four male and 24 female, 6-week-old, Wister rats were separated into four experimental dietary treatment groups (6 males and 6 females per group), as follows: (1) a control diet: containing no fructose with adequate copper (i.e., CuA/0% Fruct); (2) a diet regimen identical to the control and supplemented with 30% w/v fructose in the animals' drinking water (CuA/30% Fruct); (3) a diet ide

Tartary buckwheat is rich in flavonoids. However, the health-promoting effect of these flavonoids has not been adequately studied. In the present study, we investigated the impact of rutin, quercetin, and Tartary buckwheat on the lipid metabolism of rats on a high-fat diet. Quercetin could significantly reduce body weight, serum triacylglycerol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, TNF-α, insulin, and ameliorate glucose tolerance. It was surprising that Tartary buckwheat significantly increased the weight of the rats. Rutin, quercetin, and Tartary buckwheat tended to decreased fat deposition i

Hexavalent chromium is one of the major detrimental heavy metal pollutants. B. gargarizans tadpoles were treated with different concentrations of Cr6+ (0, 13, 52, 104, 208, and 416 μg Cr6+ L-1) from Gs 2 to Gs 42. The effect of Cr6+ on histopathological alterations and transcript levels of fatty acid metabolism-related genes as well as fatty acids composition and content in liver were examined. Histopathological changes were observed in liver at 52, 104, 208, and 416 μg Cr6+ L-1. Moreover, RT-qPCR analyses showed the downregulated mRNA levels of the genes related to fatty acid synthesis (SCD,

To gain a better understanding of how nitrate may affect carbohydrate and lipid metabolism, female wild-type mice were fed a high-fat, high-fructose diet supplemented with either 0, 400, or 800 mg nitrate/kg diet for 28 days. Additionally, obese female db/db mice were fed a 5% fat diet supplemented with the same levels and source of nitrate. Nitrate decreased the sodium-dependent uptake of glucose by ileal mucosa in wild-type mice. Moreover, nitrate significantly decreased triglyceride content and mRNA expression levels of Pparγ in liver and Glut4 in skeletal muscle. Oral glucose tolerance as

BACKGROUND: Fat tissue is strongly involved in BC tumorigenesis inducing insulin resistance, chronic inflammation and hormonal changes. Computed tomography (CT) imaging instead of body mass index (BMI) gives a reliable measure of skeletal muscle mass and body fat distribution. The impact of body composition parameters (BCPs) on chemosensitivity is still debated. We examined the associations between BCPs and tumor response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NC) in patients treated for operable breast cancer (BC).
METHODS: A retrospective review of BC patients treated with NC in Modena Cancer Center

BACKGROUND: Modern lifestyles, especially high-caloric intake and physical inactivity, contribute to the increased prevalence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), which becomes a significant health problem worldwide. Lifestyle changes, however, affect not only parental generation, but also their offspring, reinforcing the need for efficient preventive approaches to deal with this disease. This transgenerational influence of phenotypes dependent on parents (particularly maternal) behaviours may open additional research avenues. Despite persistent attempts to design an effective pharmac

Recent research has suggested a role for the intestinal microbiota in the pathogenesis and potential treatment of a wide range of liver diseases. The intestinal microbiota and bacterial products may contribute to the development of liver diseases through multiple mechanisms including increased intestinal permeability, chronic systemic inflammation, production of short-chain fatty acids and changes in metabolism. This suggests a potential role for pre-, pro- and synbiotic products in the prevention or treatment of some liver diseases. In addition, there is emerging evidence on the effects of fa

The development of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is closely linked to lifestyle factors, namely excessive caloric intake coupled with reduced physical activity and exercise. This review aims to examine the evidence behind lifestyle change as a tool to improve hepatic steatosis and liver histology in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease/non-alcoholic steatohepatitis. Furthermore, potential barriers to adopting lifestyle changes and strategies to overcome these barriers in the clinical setting are discussed.

The present study aimed to investigate whether dietary choline can regulate lipid metabolism and suppress NFκB activation and, consequently, attenuate inflammation induced by a high-fat diet in black sea bream (Acanthopagrus schlegelii). An 8-week feeding trial was conducted on fish with an initial weight of 8·16 ± 0·01 g. Five diets were formulated: control, low-fat diet (11 %); HFD, high-fat diet (17 %); and HFD supplemented with graded levels of choline (3, 6 or 12 g/kg) termed HFD + C1, HFD + C2 and HFD + C3, respectively. Dietary choline decreased lipid content in whole body and tissues.

Immune responses are often accompanied by radical changes of cellular metabolism of immune cells. On the other hand, an ever increasing number of metabolic pathways and products have been found to possess immune regulatory functions. The field of immunometabolism that investigates the interplay between metabolism and immunity has developed rapidly during the past decade. In this chapter, we attempt to summarize the recent progresses by scientists in China on metabolic regulation of innate immunity from the following three perspectives: metabolic regulation of myeloid cell functions, metabolic
