BACKGROUND: Peliosis hepatis (PH) is a rare benign lesion of vascular origin with a pathological characteristic of multiple blood-filled cavities in the liver parenchyma. It is commonly misdiagnosed due to its lack of specificity in clinical presentation and laboratory test results. Herein, a case of a patient with PH who was misdiagnosed with hepatic echinococcosis before operation to remove the lesions was analyzed, with an emphasis on the computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging characteristics of PH.
CASE SUMMARY: We outline the case of a 40-year-old Chinese female who was admit

BACKGROUND: The "starry sky" (SK) liver is ultrasonographic pattern characterized by multiple hyperechogenic foci in hepatic parenchyma. The study aimed to characterize the microscopic hepatic lesions in captive owl monkeys with SK liver.
METHODS: Thirty-seven clinically healthy owl monkeys had their liver scanned and 18 of them had liver biopsy. Animals with SK and peliosis hepatis (PH) were subjected to immunohistochemical and molecular screening for Bartonella spp.
RESULTS: SK liver occurred in 59.4% (22/37) of the owl monkeys. Biopsied animals showed steatosis, hydropic degeneration, hem

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to retrospectively evaluate contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) findings in patients with peliosis hepatis (PH).
METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted of CEUS features in 24 patients with histopathologically confirmed PH (11 men and 13 women; mean age, 32.4±7.1 years; range, 28 to 41 years). All lesions were histologically proven, either by core needle biopsy (n=10) or by hepatic surgery (n=14).
RESULTS: The mean size was 36.8±12.4 mm (range, 10 to 80 mm). On B-mode ultrasonography (BMUS), all PH lesions were heterogeneously hypoechoic, with well-

BACKGROUND: The diagnosis of newly detected liver nodules in patients with colorectal cancer (CRC) is crucial for determining prognosis and treatment. Accurate identification of benign nodules can help avoid unnecessary therapy. The aim of our study was to retrospectively review patients with CRC who underwent liver resection for benign liver nodules misdiagnosed as CRC metastasis (CRLM) in our institution.
METHODS: We reviewed all patients with a history of CRC who underwent liver resection from January 2012 to December 2019 in our institution. We specifically focused on nodules pathological

A 6-year-old spayed female Toy Poodle dog was referred to the Hokkaido University Veterinary Teaching Hospital for abdominal distension. Abdominocentesis yielded ascitic fluid that had a mildly increased total protein concentration and a 2.7-fold higher triglyceride concentration than plasma, and was interpreted as chylous ascites. The patient had an enlarged liver, which contained multiple, small, nodular masses and cyst-like structures. Microscopically, these lesions were multifocal dilated spaces containing lymphocytes, endothelial cells, fibrin and islands of hepatocytes. Increased α-smoot

BACKGROUND: The typical non-muscle complications of long-surviving X-linked myotubular myopathy (XLMTM) include scoliosis, head deformity, macrocephaly, gastroesophageal reflux disease and peliosis hepatis. Recently, pulmonary blebs and recurrent pneumothorax have also been reported as uncommon complications, whereas no reports on autopsy cases have focused on lung lesions.
CASE PRESENTATION: An 8-year-old boy with XLMTM presented recurrent pneumothorax requiring bleb resection and pleurodesis. He subsequently developed multiple pulmonary mass lesions. He died of hemorrhagic shock due to peli

The modified derivatives of testosterone, termed as androgenic steroids are indicated in the management of hypogonadism, visceral obesity and metabolic disorders. Anabolic androgenic steroids (AASs) however are surreptitiously used by athletes and body builders for cosmetic purpose owing to their anabolic effects on muscle mass and strength. The unsurveilled use of AASs subjects these users to various side effects involving multiple systems such as the endocrine, genitourinary, hepatobiliary, central nervous, musculoskeletal and psychosocial system. The liver is a hormone-sensitive organ owing

We studied retrospectively 651 PCR-confirmed Bartonella infections diagnosed at the French reference center for bartonellosis from 2014 to 2019. The most common form was cat-scratch disease (89%) followed by endocarditis (9%). Disseminated forms (2%) mainly presented as bacillary angiomatosis or peliosis hepatis in solid organ transplant recipients.

X-linked myotubular myopathy (MTM) (OMIM 310400) is a severe neuromuscular disorder caused by mutations in the myotubularin (MTM1) gene. Liver hemorrhaging due to peliosis hepatis (PH) is a fatal complication. We herein report 2 successful cases of living-donor liver transplantation (LDLT) for MTM patients due to liver hemorrhaging caused by PH and review previous reports. A boy who was 9 years and 4 months old initially underwent left lateral segmentectomy due to massive hepatic and intraperitoneal hemorrhaging. As bleeding from the remnant liver continued after hepatectomy, this patient emer

Peliosis hepatis involves multiple blood-filled cystic spaces in the hepatic parenchyma. Using conventional imaging, distinguishing PH from other malignancies can be difficult. The findings of Peliosis hepatis on gadoxetic acid (Gd-EOB) enhanced magnetic resonance imaging are not well reported. Therefore, we report the imaging features of pathologically proven PH. On the hepatobiliary phase of Gd-EOB magnetic resonance imaging, most lesions showed unenhanced areas, but some lesions showed central enhancement "halo sign."

Peliosis hepatis is a rare condition characterized by blackish-blue blood-filled cavities in hepatic parenchyma caused by dilatation of hepatic sinusoids. Peliosis hepatis has been described in secondary immunodeficiencies and certain medications. We present the first case of peliosis hepatis in a patient with a primary immunodeficiency, common variable immunodeficiency. A 44-year-old African-American male presented with gastrointestinal bleeding and elevated liver function tests. His medical history included common variable immunodeficiency and chronic kidney disease. The patient had jaundice

This review covers a spectrum of pathologic changes and diseases involving hepatic sinusoids. In the majority of patients, clinical findings are rather uncharacteristic such as hepatomegaly, portal hypertension, or lingering liver failure of unknown origin. In contrast to more common hepatic disorders, characteristic clinical, serological, immunoserological, and radiographical findings are lacking. In these cases, biopsy findings may be crucial to guide treatment decisions. This review covers a variety of hepatic disorders that practicing pathologists may encounter in their clinical routine.

Peliosis hepatis is a rare benign disease, but in last years the number of identified cases has increased. This disease is known to be sometimes accompanied by hepatocellular carcinoma. In the recent article, Yu et al describe a case of liver peliosis, characterized by an increased proliferative index. Therefore, additional diagnosis of patients should include analyzing other tumor markers expression in order to assess the risk of malignant cell transformation in peliosis hepatis.

Peliosis hepatis (PH) is an uncommon, benign hepatic vascular condition involving liver lesions consisting of dilated sinusoidal spaces that ultimately lead to numerous blood-filled cavities within the liver parenchyma. We detail the case of a 62-year-old woman who presented with a large hepatic haematoma resulting from intracystic haemorrhage. She was subsequently diagnosed with PH via arteriogram. Her symptoms were successfully treated surgically with open fenestration. Patient's postoperative course was unremarkable, with no recurrence of symptoms to date.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the MRI findings of the effects of exogenous sex steroids on the liver.
FINDINGS: Estrogens, progesterone and synthetic testosterone are exogenous sex steroids that may result in a variety of liver diseases, including tumour formation and vascular disorders. These hormones are mainly administered in the form of the oral contraceptive pill (OCP) and anabolic steroids. Both are implicated in hepatic adenoma formation. The HNF-1α-mutated and inflammatory adenoma subgroups are more commonly seen in association with the OCP whereas there is an increased incidence of the β-ca

This report describes the autopsy case of a 4-year-old boy who died from hepatic hemorrhage and rupture caused by peliosis hepatis with X-linked myotubular myopathy. Peliosis hepatis is characterized by multiple blood-filled cavities of various sizes in the liver, which occurs in chronic wasting disease or with the use of specific drugs. X-linked myotubular myopathy is one of the most serious types of congenital myopathies, in which an affected male infant typically presents with severe hypotonia and respiratory distress immediately after birth. Although each disorder is rare, 12 cases of pedi

Peliosis hepatis (PH) is a rare disease characterized by the presence of sinusoidal dilation and blood-filled cysts throughout the hepatic parenchyma. We report a case of PH in a 49-year-old woman with chronic renal failure (CRF) on hemodialysis and with renal cell carcinoma (RCC). Dynamic contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) showed a 35-mm-diameter, hypervascular tumor in the liver and RCC in the right renal cyst. Ultrasound and superparamagnetic iron oxide-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging were also performed; however, the liver tumor could not be distinguished from the metastasis of
