[Danazol-induced peliosis hepatis accompanied by disseminated intravascular coagulation in a patient with myelodysplastic syndrome transformed from aplastic anemia].

Peliosis hepatis (PH) is a condition involving benign tumors pathologically characterized by multiple blood-filled cavities, mostly affecting the liver and spleen. Androgenic-steroids are widely used in patients with bone marrow failure syndromes (e.g.: aplastic anemia) and these patients are at increased risk of developing PH. Although patients with PH are generally asymptomatic, PH can progress to liver failure and even fatal spontaneous intraabdominal hemorrhage. Therefore, early diagnosis is critical in order to prevent life-threatening complications of PH. We herein report a patient with

Peliosis Hepatis Mimicking Malignant Hypervascular Tumors.

BACKGROUND: Peliosis hepatis is an uncommon vascular condition characterized by multiple, randomly distributed, blood-filled, and cyst-like cavities throughout the liver. The unique clinical nature consisting of an asymptomatic, benign, and incidental finding sometimes conceals itself even until autopsy. However, the exact pathomechanism remains as yet unproven. METHOD: We encountered the patient with multiple hypervascular masses in the whole liver and investigated the clinicopathological features underlying this condition. RESULTS: Detailed herein is a case of peliosis hepatis on the basis

The centenary of the discovery of trench fever, an emerging infectious disease of World War 1.

In 1915, a British medical officer on the Western Front reported on a soldier with relapsing fever, headache, dizziness, lumbago, and shin pain. Within months, additional cases were described, mostly in frontline troops, and the new disease was called trench fever. More than 1 million troops were infected with trench fever during World War 1, with each affected soldier unfit for duty for more than 60 days. Diagnosis was challenging, because there were no pathognomonic signs and symptoms and the causative organism could not be cultured. For 3 years, the transmission and cause of trench fever we

Resolution of spontaneous hemoabdomen secondary to peliosis hepatis following surgery and azithromycin treatment in a Bartonella species infected dog.

OBJECTIVE: To describe a case of hemoperitonium in a dog with Bartonellosis and peliosis hepatis (PH) lesions that resolved following antimicrobial therapy. CASE SUMMARY: A 3-year-11-month-old 22.5 kg female spayed mixed breed dog presented for progressive lethargy and vomiting. An abdominal ultrasonographic examination revealed moderate ascites, which when sampled was nonclotting hemorrhagic fluid. An exploratory laparotomy revealed a large volume of nonclotted blood in the dog's abdomen and blood-filled vesicular lesions dispersed diffusely along multiple lobes of the liver. Biopsies reveal

Heterozygous p53 knockout mouse model for dehydropyrrolizidine alkaloid-induced carcinogenesis.

Dehydropyrrolizidine alkaloids (DHPA) are a large, structurally diverse group of plant-derived protoxins that are potentially carcinogenic. With worldwide significance, these alkaloids can contaminate or be naturally present in the human food supply. To develop a small animal model that may be used to compare the carcinogenic potential of the various DHPAs, male heterozygous p53 knockout mice were administered a short-term treatment of riddelliine 5, 15 or 45 mg kg(-1) bodyweight day(-1) by oral gavage for 14 days, or dosed a long-term treatment of riddelliine 1 mg kg(-1) bodyweight day(-1) in

Spontaneous hepatic rupture during pregnancy in a patient with peliosis hepatis.

Spontaneous hepatic rupture (SHR) during pregnancy is a rare but well known complication and it usually occurs alongside eclampsia or HELLP syndrome. SHR in uncomplicated pregnancy is extremely rare and can be associated to different undiagnosed pathological conditions. We report the case of a nulliparous woman, 27 weeks pregnant, with a peliosis hepatis, previously unknown, who was admitted to our unit due to SHR and massive hemoperitoneum. The conception was obtained by embryo transfer after multiple attempts of hormone-supported cycles using estrogens and progesterone. After emergency lapar

Atypical Hepatocellular Neoplasm With Peliosis in Cirrhotic Liver Versus Hepatocellular Carcinoma: A Diagnostic Trap.

Atypical hepatocellular neoplasm (AHN) is an adenoma-like hepatic tumor that even occurs in noncirrhotic liver of males (any age) or females ≥ 50 years old, or associates focal atypical features. In this article, 2 unusual cases diagnosed in elderly cirrhotic patients, unrelated to steroids, are presented. The first case was incidentally diagnosed in an 83-year-old female. During laparoscopic surgery for cholecystectomy, hemoperitoneum was installed and laparotomy was necessary to remove a 70-mm nodular encapsulated hepatic tumor that was microscopically composed by hepatocyte-like cells with

Generalised peliosis hepatis mimicking metastases after long-term use of oral contraceptives.

Peliosis hepatis (PH) is a rare vascular condition of the liver characterised by the presence of cystic blood-filled cavities distributed randomly throughout the liver parenchyma. PH should be considered in the differential diagnosis of women with a long history of use of oral contraceptives with suspected hypervascular lesions diagnosed by imaging, but with an unknown primary tumour. Because of the extensive use of oral contraceptives in the general female population worldwide, PH should be added to the differential diagnosis of suspected hypervascular liver lesions.

Spontaneous hepatic haemorrhage: a review of pathogenesis, aetiology and treatment.

BACKGROUND: A spontaneous hepatic haemorrhage (SHH) is a rare condition that presents acutely to both hepatobiliary and general surgeons. Management of the condition is challenging because of the emergent presentation requiring immediate intervention, the presence of underlying chronic liver disease and the multiple potential underlying aetiological conditions. METHODS: A literature search on a spontaneous hepatic haemorrhage was instituted on Medline (1966-2014), Cochrane Register of Controlled Trials, EMBASE (1947-2014), PubMed, Web of Science and Google Scholar. The specific topics of inte

Spontaneous rupture of multifocal hepatocellular carcinoma: case report.

Hemoperitoneum due to nontraumatic liver rupture is rare. The most common cause of nontraumatic rupture of the liver is hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). The other causes of nontraumatic liver ruptures are peliosis hepatis, polyarteritis nodosa, systemic lupus erythematosus, preeclampsia, metastatic carcinoma, and other primary liver tumors. In this report, we present the computed tomography findings of spontaneous liver rupture in a 52-year-old male patient due to multifocal HCC, with the diagnosis proven by surgical specimen.

Peliosis hepatis disseminated rapidly throughout the liver in a patient with prostate cancer: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: In the World Health Organization histological classification of the liver tumor, peliosis hepatis is defined as a tumor-like lesion. The entity is characterized by the appearance of multiple cyst-like, blood-filled spaces within the liver parenchyma. CASE PRESENTATION: A 77-year-old Japanese man with prostate cancer was referred to our department because he was diagnosed as having two hepatic tumors. The tumors were confirmed to be peliosis hepatis by repeated needle biopsies and because of their atypical images by enhanced computed tomography and enhanced magnetic resonance ima

Peliosis hepatis: Personal experience and literature review.

Peliosis hepatis (PH) is a disease characterized by multiple and small, blood-filled cysts within the parenchymatous organs. PH is a very rare disease, more common in adults, and when it affects the liver, it comes to the surgeon's attention only in an extremely urgent situation after the lesion's rupture with the resulting hemoperitoneum. This report describes the case of a 29-year-old woman affected by recurring abdominal pain. Computed tomography scans showed a hepatic lesion formed by multiple hypodense areas, which showed an early acquisition of the contrast during the arterial phase. Fur

Peliosis hepatis presenting with massive hepatomegaly in a patient with idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura.

Peliosis hepatis is a rare condition that can cause hepatic hemorrhage, rupture, and ultimately liver failure. Several authors have reported that peliosis hepatis develops in association with chronic wasting disease or prolonged use of anabolic steroids or oral contraceptives. In this report we describe a case in which discontinuation of steroid therapy improved the condition of a patient with peliosis hepatis. Our patient was a 64-year-old woman with a history of long-term steroid treatment for idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura . Her symptoms included abdominal pain and weight loss; the onl

Impact of the Follicular Lymphoma International Prognostic Index risk categorization on survival of patients with follicular lymphoma in Pakistani population: a single centre experience.

There has been increasing interest in the development of effective agents that can be safely used to promote anabolism in the clinical setting for patients with chronic wasting conditions as well as in the prevention and treatment of frailty associated with loss of muscle tissue in aging (sarcopenia). One such agent is the anabolic androgenic steroid (AAS) oxandrolone, which has been used in such clinical situations as HIV-related muscle wasting, severe burn injury, trauma following major surgery, neuromuscular disorders and alcoholic hepatitis for over 30 years. In the US, oxandrolone is the
