Peliosis hepatis complicated by portal hypertension following renal transplantation.

Peliosis hepatis (PH) is a vascular lesion of the liver that mimics a hepatic tumor. PH is often associated with underlying conditions, such as chronic infection and tumor malignancies, or with the use of anabolic steroids, immunosuppressive drugs, and oral contraceptives. Most patients with PH are asymptomatic, but some present with abdominal distension and pain. In some cases, PH may induce intraperitoneal hemorrhage and portal hypertension. This study analyzed a 46-year-old male who received a transplanted kidney nine years prior and had undergone long-term immunosuppressive therapy followi

Peliosis hepatis in a kidney transplant recipient with manifestation as massive ascites and liver dysfunction: case report.

We report a case of 59-year-old woman who received a kidney transplant 7 years earlier without evidence of viral hepatitis history. She was asymptomatic initially and a newly developed nodule, ∼2.3 cm in size, was discovered in the right liver during routine sonographic examination. Computerized tomography-guided biopsy was inconclusive at that time. However, the lesion grew to 6.8 cm and bilobular multiple nodules developed with concomitant massive ascites and hyperbilirubinemia months later. Laparoscopy showed typical bluish-reddish-blackish nodules. Needle-biopsy histology showed severe sin

Diffuse glutamine synthetase overexpression restricted to areas of peliosis in a β-catenin-activated hepatocellular adenoma: a potential pitfall in glutamine synthetase interpretation.

Hepatocellular adenomas have recently been classified into four subtypes based on molecular findings: hepatocyte nuclear factor 1α (HNF1α) inactivated, inflammatory/telangiectatic, β-catenin activated, and unclassifiable. β-catenin-activated adenomas have the potential for malignant transformation and are thus important to recognize. Diffuse glutamine synthetase immunohistochemical positivity has been shown to be a reliable surrogate marker for β-catenin activation, though variations in staining patterns may be difficult to interpret. We report a case of a peliotic adenoma that was morphologic

[Focal hepatic peliosis without evident aetiology].

Hepatic peliosis is a rare vascular disorder of the liver characterized by small cavities containing blood. It is most often asymptomatic but may give rise to portal hypertension and even fatal liver rupture. In this case a 47-year-old woman presented with abdominal pain and elevated alkaline phosphatase. An ultrasonography and additional MRI of the liver detected three lesions suspected of focal nodular hyperplasia. A core needle biopsy revealed that hepatic peliosis was the correct diagnosis. No causative factors were found and the patient was followed by consecutive MRIs.

The N-nitrosodiethylamine mouse model: sketching a timeline of evolution of chemically-induced hepatic lesions.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a frequent and aggressive malignancy associated with multiple environmental risk factors. The chemically-induced mouse model of diethylnitrosamine (DEN) provides useful insight into liver carcinogenesis, namely HCC. This work aimed to study the multistep process of hepato-carcinogenesis, providing a systematic framework for animal studies on this subject. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Male ICR mice were divided into six control and six DEN-exposed groups. Saline solution and DEN were injected intra-peritoneally, respectively, for eight consecutive we

A case of intra-abdominal hemorrhage secondary to peliosis hepatis.

INTRODUCTION: peliosis hepatis (PH) is a rare vascular condition of the liver characterized by the presence of cystic blood filled cavities distributed randomly throughout the liver parenchyma Tsokos and co-workers [1-6]. Peliosis is most commonly found in the liver but can also involve the spleen, bone marrow, lungs, and abdominal lymph nodes Tsokos and Erbersdobler [1]. PRESENTATION OF CASE: We report a case of peliosis hepatis diagnosed post laparotomy. She required a re-look laparotomy with removal of packs peritoneal lavage, placement of intraseed and subhepatic drain. The patient was di

Pathogenicity and treatment of Bartonella infections.

Bartonella spp. are responsible for emerging and re-emerging diseases around the world. The majority of human infections are caused by Bartonella henselae, Bartonella quintana and Bartonella bacilliformis, although other Bartonella spp. have also been associated with clinical manifestations in humans. The severity of Bartonella infection correlates with the patient's immune status. Clinical manifestations can range from benign and self-limited to severe and life-threatening disease. Clinical conditions associated with Bartonella spp. include local lymphadenopathy, bacteraemia, endocarditis, an

[Seroprevalence of Bartonella henselae and Bartonella quintana in blood donors in Aydin province, Turkey].

Bartonella species cause several diseases in humans such as cat stratch disease, bacillary angiomatosis, peliosis hepatis, endocarditis, Carrion disease and trench fever. Cat scratch disease and bacillary angiomatosis cases have already been reported in Turkey. Studies from our region, namely Aydin (a province located at Western Anatolia, Turkey) indicated that mean Bartonella henselae IgG seropositivity rate is 11.5% in risk groups and may reach to 26.5% in pet owners. The aim of this study was to determine the seroprevalence of B.henselae and B.quintana in healthy blood donors in our univers

Spontaneous hepatic rupture in a patient with peliosis hepatis: A report of one case.

INTRODUCTION: Liver rupture is a serious event that is most commonly due to blunt abdominal trauma. We present a case of peliosis hepatis in a patient admitted for acute pyelonephritis who developed hemoperitoneum due to spontaneous hepatic rupture from this rare liver condition. PRESENTATION OF CASE: We report a 44 year-old woman who presented to our hospital with acute pyelonephrititis and hemoperitoneum due to spontaneous hepatic rupture from peliosis hepatis. Physicians should be aware of this rare condition in patients who present with non-traumatic hepatic rupture with hemoperitoneum.

Surgical treatment of a patient with peliosis hepatis: a case report.

This report describes a case of a space-occupying lesion in the right liver in a 38-year-old man who was found to have peliosis hepatis. Clinical data of this patient were presented, including medical history, laboratory test and imaging results, and postoperative pathological findings (hematoxylin and eosin staining). Review of his medical history showed that the patient had been bitten by a dog three years earlier. B-mode ultrasonography revealed an uneven echo mass in the right hemiliver, and magnetic resonance imaging scans also showed a mass in the anterior segment of the right liver. Upo

Oxaliplatin-related sinusoidal obstruction syndrome mimicking metastatic liver tumors.

A 40-year-old woman who had undergone a curative low anterior resection for advanced rectal cancer was admitted to our hospital. She had been administrated oxaliplatin-based chemotherapy as postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy. The contrast-enhanced computed tomography revealed three hypovascular tumors, 3.0, 1.5 and 1.0 cm in diameter, located in the right hepatic lobe. The hepatocyte phase of the gadoxetic acid-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated these lesions as hypointense tumors relative to the surrounding hepatic parenchyma. All these findings of the preoperative imaging moda

Peliosis hepatis in a child with myotubular myopathy: successful treatment using hepatic artery embolization.

Peliosis hepatis (PH) is a rare condition characterized by multiple blood-filled spaces within the hepatic parenchyma that can lead to fatal hemorrhage. There is no consensus on the best treatment algorithm for PH, and therapy is directed at removing the potential causative agent with operative intervention when necessary. Here we present the first known case of PH in a child with myotubular myopathy who was successfully treated with angiography and hepatic artery embolization as a first line therapy, without the need for operative intervention. Awareness of this condition and the available tr
