Bartonella species, which belong to the α-2 subgroup of Proteobacteria, are fastidious Gram-negative bacteria that are highly adapted to their mammalian host reservoirs. Bartonella species are responsible for different clinical conditions affecting humans, including Carrion's disease, cat scratch disease, trench fever, bacillary angiomatosis, endocarditis and peliosis hepatis. While some of these diseases can resolve spontaneously without treatment, in other cases, the disease is fatal without antibiotic treatment. In this article, we discuss the antibiotic susceptibility patterns of Bartonell

Peliosis hepatis is a rare lesion histologically characterized by multiple cavities representing dilated sinusoids filled with blood in the liver. Although it has been observed in the liver parenchyma in association with several diseases and medications, there are few reports of nodules of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) showing extensive peliotic change. We describe a case of HCC showing extensive peliotic change in the cancer nodule. A 73-year-old man with a liver tumor was referred to our hospital for further investigation. Abdominal ultrasonography revealed an 8-cm hyperechoic lesion with a

BACKGROUND: Peliosis hepatis (PH) is a benign condition characterized by sinusoidal ectasia and blood-filled lacunar spaces within the liver parenchyma. The disease has been associated with a number of drugs and illnesses such as immunodeficiency states, infections, malignancy and other miscellaneous diseases.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We describe the association of PH and cancer in two consecutive patients. In case 1, the peliotic lesions mimicked metastatic dissemination of a neuroendocrine tumor in a patient with normal octreoscan and tumor markers, parameters that were abnormal at the initial

We present the case of a 25-year-old woman with a history of weakness, weight loss, anemia, and elevated liver enzymes. Outpatient diagnostic evaluation, including abdominal ultrasound and endoscopies, revealed no conclusive explanation for the clinical picture and the patient was admitted to our clinic. Because of the hepatosplenomegaly together with the elevated liver enzymes, one of our differential diagnoses was that of liver disease. To clarify this, we performed a minilaparoscopy, which showed multiple diffuse distributed spots of livid color without clear margins distributed all over bo

Peliosis hepatis is a rare pathological entity and may cause fatal hepatic hemorrhage and liver failure. Here, we present a young male patient with aplastic anemia, who had received long-term treatment with oxymetholone. The patient suffered from sudden onset of intra-abdominal hemorrhage with profuse hemoperitoneum. The patient was treated successfully with a right hemihepatectomy and is in good health after 13 postoperative months. We suggest that peliosis hepatis be considered in patients with hepatic parenchymal hematoma, especially in patients under prolonged synthetic anabolic steroid me

Hemochromatosis can be classified as (a) primary, when it originates from a genetic disturbance that promotes the increase of iron absorption, or (b) secondary, when it relates to chronic diseases or to multiple transfusions. The distribution of iron accumulation differs between these two forms; therefore, they can be distinguished by using imaging methods in the majority of cases. Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging is the most sensitive and specific imaging modality in the diagnosis of hemochromatosis. The susceptibility effect caused by the accumulation of iron leads to signal loss in the affec

Peliosis is a rare lesion characterized by the presence of blood-filled cysts, with unknown true incidence and etiology. It has been most frequently reported to the liver (peliosis hepatis) and to other organs of the mononuclear phagocytic system, such as spleen, bone marrow and lymph nodes. However, other organs may also be affected. Its occurrence has been linked to wasting conditions such as tuberculosis, cancer, immunosuppression and the use of androgenic-anabolic steroids. Herein, we report a case of pulmonary peliosis, in a 29-year-old man who was abusing testosterone as it was proved by

Bartonella spp are fastidious bacteria that occur in the blood of man and mammals; they are usually vector borne but can also be transmitted by animal scratches and bites. The bartonelloses of medical importance comprise Carrión's disease, trench fever, cat-scratch disease, bacillary angiomatosis, and peliosis hepatis. Carrión's disease, known as Oroya fever in the acute phase and verruga peruana (Peruvian wart) in its chronic form, has curious manifestations that, until recently, have been restricted in their geographic distribution to dwellers of the high, dry Andean valleys, but new sites o

Bartonella henselae is the causative agent of cat scratch disease, a human infection usually characterized by persistent regional lymphadenopathy. It is transmitted to humans by cat scratches or bites. Cats are the major reservoir for this bacterium thus B. henselae has a worldwide distribution. The bacterial pathogenicity may bay emphasized by the immune status of the infected host. Angiomatosis or hepatic peliosis are the most frequent clinical manifestations in immunocompromised patients. B. henselae is also responsible for endocarditis in patients with valvular diseases, and may induce var

OBJECTIVE: This presentation aims to provide an overview of the manifestations of some unusual benign focal liver lesions (FLLs) on low-acoustic power contrast-enhanced sonography (CES) with a sulfur hexafluoride contrast agent.
METHODS: The patients were selected retrospectively from 2209 cases with FLLs who had undergone CES examinations for characterization during the past 3 years. The pathologic examinations proved that they were intrahepatic biliary cystadenoma (n = 1), angiomyolipoma (AML; n = 4), lipoma (n = 1), biliary epithelial dysplasia (n = 1), a fungal inflammatory mass (n = 1),

Sinusoidal alterations unrelated to primary hepatocellular damage present without characteristic clinical findings and in these cases the liver biopsy is particularly important. Capillarization of sinusoids is characterized by closing of fenestration, formation of a basal membrane and by the expression of CD34 and is typical for active cirrhosis. In nodular regeneratory hyperplasia, capillarization indicates a local or general disturbance of perfusion. In large regenerative nodules, focal nodular hyperplasia and liver cell adenoma CD34-positive capillaries reflect afferent parts and CD34-negat

Peliosis hepatis is a rare benign vascular disorder of the liver that may be associated with malignancy, infection and drugs. The imaging manifestation of this disorder is often variable and nonspecific making its diagnosis difficult. We describe a rare case of peliosis hepatis and gummatous syphilis of the liver with emphasis on CT findings. Image characteristics of our patient included pseudotumoral appearance of peliosis hepatis, isodensity to the adjacent liver parenchyma on unenhanced and dual-phase scanning. To our knowledge, peliosis hepatis associated with syphilis and unique enhanceme

The pathology of 33 moustached tamarins (Saguinus mystax) previously used in hepatitis A and GB virus studies is reported. Chronic lesions in colon, heart, and kidney were common in the monkeys and appeared not to be due to the experimental exposures. Colitis cystica profunda (CCP), a disease that affects humans and is characterized by the presence of mucin-filled epithelial downgrowths and cysts in the colonic submucosa, was found in 24 of the 33 (72.7%) tamarins. Interstitial myocardial fibrosis was present in 22 (66.6%) animals, and various degrees of membranoproliferative glomerulonephriti

The unique dual blood supply of the liver (75% portal venous, 25% hepatic arterial) makes multiphase helical computed tomography (CT) a highly suitable technique for hepatic evaluation with imaging in two (arterial and portal venous) or more phases. Multiphase helical CT has become an important tool in the detection and characterization of hepatic tumors. In some situations, hemodynamic changes might mimic neoplastic or inflammatory lesions and evoke diagnostic uncertainty. To confidently identify hepatic conditions such as venous outflow obstruction (Budd-Chiari syndrome), arterioportal shunt
