BACKGROUND: The chances of presenting to hospital emergency departments (EDs) are significantly higher in individuals who ignore regular dental care and in those with medical conditions. Little is known about nationwide estimates of hospital-based ED visits caused by periodontal conditions in the United States. The objective of this study is to determine the incidence of ED visits caused by periodontal conditions that occurred in a 2006 nationwide sample and to identify the risk factors for hospitalization during the ED visits.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the most frequent malignant tumor of the liver. The diagnosis of HCC depends on the measurement of serum alpha-fetoprotein levels and imaging techniques. Liver biopsy is recommended in uncertain cases. We review the morphological characteristics of HCC and their differential diagnoses including other liver tumors and metastases. We further specify problems and pitfalls in the differential diagnosis and discuss limitations of liver biopsies in the diagnosis of HCC.

UNLABELLED: The hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) is the only marker used for diagnosis and follow-up of hepatitis B infection in Togo. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the use of HBsAg testing for follow-up of hepatitis B infection. This study was conducted in 230 patients referred to the National Institute of Hygiene for HBsAg testing. In all cases the requested test was performed and the request and results were evaluated.

Cytochrome P450 (CYP, P450) is the collective term for a superfamily of heme-containing membrane proteins responsible for the metabolism of approximately 70 - 80 % of clinically used drugs. Besides the liver and other peripheral organs, P450 isoforms are expressed in glial cells and neurons of the brain. To enlighten their function and significance is a topic of high interest, as most of the neuroactive drugs used in therapy today are not only substrates, but also inducers of brain P450s with far reaching consequences. BACKGROUND: Epithelial tissues of the gastrointestinal tract and the liver express predominantly cytokeratin 8 and cytokeratin 18. In vitro experiments and animal studies have demonstrated a protective influence of keratin 8 and keratin 18 against toxic damage of hepatocytes. A specific mutation of keratin 8 (G61C) was found to be a genetic risk factor for the development of cryptogenic liver cirrhosis.
