AIM AND BACKGROUND: Pancreatic pseudocysts (PPs) commonly occur as a complication of both acute and chronic pancreatitis. Surgical drainage is indicated when cysts are >6 cm, persist for more than 6 weeks, or cause symptoms or complications. This study aimed to assess and compare the outcomes of laparoscopic and open cystogastrostomy for PPs.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective comparative study was conducted in the Department of General Surgery at a tertiary care hospital, including 64 patients diagnosed with PPs. Among them, 22 patients underwent laparoscopic and 42 patients underwent op

Pancreatic pseudocysts are encapsulated collections of enzyme-rich pancreatic secretions that may extend beyond the peripancreatic region. Extension into the mediastinum and heart is uncommon and may mimic other thoracic or intracardiac pathologies. A 36-year-old man with chronic alcohol use presented with abdominal pain, fever, dyspnoea and palpitations on a background of recurrent alcohol-related pancreatitis. Contrast-enhanced CT demonstrated acute-on-chronic pancreatitis with multiple pancreatic pseudocysts and a right atrial filling defect initially interpreted as thrombus. Focused ultras

INTRODUCTION: Acute pancreatitis (AP) is an inflammatory pancreatic disorder with potentially severe systemic consequences. While its immediate clinical impact is well established, the long-term multisystem comorbidities of AP remain underexplored. Clarifying the temporal sequence of these comorbidities is essential for improving patient outcomes.
METHODS: We conducted a phenome-wide association study (PheWAS) to investigate the associations between AP and 1429 clinical outcomes using Cox proportional hazards models in the UK Biobank. A total of 4767 AP cases were matched 1:10 with controls t

Pancreatic pseudocyst is a usual complication of chronic pancreatitis. Diagnosis is usually established with the help of cross-sectional imaging. Typical presenting complaints are abdominal pain and vomiting. However, atypical presentations of pseudocyst of the pancreas continue to puzzle clinicians throughout the world, leading to difficulty in diagnosis and hence, the development of life-threatening complications. Here, we report a case of a 47-year-old male who was a known case of chronic pancreatitis related to alcoholism presenting with dyspnea, dysphagia, chest pain, and vomiting with a

Although encountered routinely in the outpatient department, hiccups or singultus are mostly neglected by the clinicians owing to its benign presentation and self-limiting nature. However, an innocent-looking symptom such as a hiccup can be a warning sign of serious underlying medical conditions and hence should be addressed seriously. Hiccups can seriously alter the quality of life and induce anxiety when they become intractable. We present an atypical case of a 30-year-old male who presented with intractable hiccups for four months and upon investigations revealed to be a case of chronic pan

BACKGROUND: Pancreatic pseudocysts are rarely reported complications of pancreas transplant.
CASE: We present a case of a patient with simultaneous pancreas and kidney transplant with bladder exocrine drainage who developed reflux pancreatitis and symptomatic pancreatic pseudocyst as a result of neuropathic bladder, 15 years after the original transplant. He was initially managed with percutaneous aspiration and drainage along with Foley catheter placement to help with bladder emptying. But the pseudocyst recurred after drains and Foley were removed. Eventually, he underwent an enteric conver

BACKGROUND: Pediatric heart transplantation is a now a well-established and standard treatment option for end stage heart failure for various conditions in children. Due to logistic issues, it is not an option for in most pediatric cardiac centres in the third world.
AIM: We sought to describe our early experience in the current era in India.
METHODS: This is a short term retrospective chart review of pediatric patients who underwent heart transplantation at our centre. Mean/Median with standard deviation /range was used to present data.
RESULTS: Twenty patients underwent orthotopic heart t

Pseudoaneurysm of peripancreatic vessel is a rare complication of pancreatitis. The splenic artery is the most commonly affected vessels close to the pancreas. Pseudoaneurysm of right gastroepiploic artery is rare. It can rupture into Gastro Intestinal (GI) tract, retroperitoneum, peritoneal cavity, biliopancreatic duct or pseudocyst. Clinical diagnosis of unruptured pseudoaneurysm is rarely possible because there are no specific signs and symptoms. We hereby report a case of pseudoaneurysm of aberrant right gastroepiploic artery in 30-year-old male which presented with history of epigastric p

A pancreatic pseudocyst arises as a result of acute or chronic pancreatitis, pancreatic trauma, or obstruction of the pancreatic duct by a neoplasm. Most of the pseudocysts are located within the head and the body of the pancreas but 20% are extra-pancreatic. We report a case of a 33-year-old gentleman presenting with acute on chronic alcoholic pancreatitis with hepatic sub-capsular pseudocyst involving left lobe of liver, with intra-cystic bleed was successfully treated with Ultrasonography (USG) guided drainage. Computed tomography (CT) and high level of amylase in the collection plays an im

Pancreatic pseudocysts are notorious for their extension beyond the normal confines of the pancreatic bed due to dissection of the enzymatic pseudocyst fluid along fascial planes. Such collections of pancreatic juice may compress the kidney. Extension of the pseudocyst into the perirenal space is, however, uncommon. We report a case of pseudocyst of pancreas lying in the subcapsular plane of the left kidney with a patent communication with the pancreatic duct (pancreaticorenal fistula). The compressive effect of the pseudocyst on the kidney compromised intrarenal perfusion as evidenced by a fa

Pseudocyst formation is a common complication of acute and chronic pancreatitis. Most common site of pseudocyst is lesser sac; mediastinal extension of pseudocyst is rare. Other possibilities of posterior mediastinal cyst must be considered. This patient presented with computed tomography abdomen with thorax showing a large thoraco-abdominal pseudocyst with right sided pleural effusion. It was confirmed to be pancreatic pseudocyst by analyzing fluid for amylase and lipase during surgery. In our patient, the pseudocyst was accessible transabdominaly. Cystogastrostomy was not possible as it was

Hydatid cyst of the pancreas is very rare and usually presents with obstructive jaundice. We report a case of a 7-year-old girl with cyst of the pancreas without any obstructive jaundice. The child was treated surgically and hydatid cyst of pancreas was found. Partial pericystectomy was performed. After 1 month on follow-up, the child developed pseudocyst of pancreas, which needed cystogastrostomy. Postoperatively, the child improved and is remaining well after 3 months of follow-up. Hydatid cysts of pancreas are very difficult to diagnose preoperatively and should be kept as a differential di

Hemorrhage into pseudocyst of pancreas can rarely present as life threatening massive UGI bleeding. We present a case of 21-year-old male, admitted to our department, who was a known case of posttraumatic acute pancreatitis and who developed massive upper GI bleeding. CT angiography of abdomen showed aneurysm of gastroduodenal artery. Patient was successfully treated with coil embolization of gastroduodenal artery.

We report a case of a middle aged, man with diabetes who presented with dysphagia and odynophagia. On evaluation, he was diagnosed to have an acute prevertebral abscess with an unusual aetiology, an infected pseudocyst of pancreas. Contrast-enhanced CT revealed an enhancing collection in the prevertebral space extending to the retrogastric space and communicating with the body of the pancreas via the oesophageal hiatus. Transoral incision and drainage of the prevertebral abscess were performed. Nasogastric tube was placed in the prevertebral space for continuous drainage and daily irrigation.

Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (SWL) is considered the standard of care for the treatment of small upper ureteric and renal calculi. A few centers have extended its use to the treatment of bile duct calculi and pancreatic calculi. The complication rates with SWL are low, resulting in its wide spread acceptance and usage. However, some of the serious complications reported in 1% of patients include acute pancreatitis, perirenal hematoma, urosepsis, venous thrombosis, biliary obstruction, bowel perforation, lung injury, rupture of aortic aneurysm and intracranial hemorrhage. Non-obstetric diseases during pregnancy are not uncommon. The presence of systemic disease may further insult the pregnancy leading to alteration in the normal function of other system. Hence, it is important to treat the disease depending upon the severity and type of urgency. Several systemic diseases in pregnancy and management have been reported earlier but it is necessary to report a rare pathology, treatment option and its anesthetic management. We report anesthetic management of a rare case of pseudo pancreatic cyst in a pregnant lady operated for cysto-gastrostomy and also highlighting

Hydatid disease is an endemic and common zoonosis in India. Liver is the most common site of infection. However, extra hepatic primary pancreatic hydatid cyst is rare. We report a case of primary hydatid cyst in the tail of pancreas compressing the adjacent organs in a 43-year-old male who presented with abdominal mass and was diagnosed as pancreatic cyst/splenic cyst by ultrasonography. Computed tomography of abdomen revealed a large cystic lesion in the tail of pancreas suggestive of a pseudocyst of pancreas. The case was managed surgically by splenectomy and distal pancreatectomy with alben

INTRODUCTION: Lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM) is a rare disease characterized by proliferation of morphologically distinguishable smooth muscle cells in the lymphatics and lymph nodes of the pulmonary parenchyma in most cases. Extrapulmonary LAM is a rare condition and is found to occur concurrently, before or after pulmonary LAM, and show strong association with tuberous sclerosis.
DISCUSSION: The literature regarding extrapulmonary LAM without associated pulmonary LAM is limited due to the extreme rarity of the cases. We hereby describe clinical, pathological and radiological features of pri
