INTRODUCTION: Essential precondition for the development of cervical cancer is a persistent human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. The majority - approximately 70% - of cervical carcinomas is caused by two high-risk HPV types (16 and 18). Recently, two vaccines have been approved to the German market with the potential to induce protection against HPV 16 and HPV 18 among additional low-risk virus types.
OBJECTIVES: To analyse whether HPV vaccination is effective with regard to the reduction of cervical cancer and precursors of cervical carcinoma (CIN), respectively? Does HPV vaccination repres

We report a 28-year-old-female who presented with primary amenorrhoea, absence of puberty, obesity and normal stature. The subject was clearly short as a child, with a height more than 2 SD below normal until the age of 15 years. The pubertal growth spurt failed to develop. She continued growing at a prepubertal rate until growth ceased at the age of 20 years, reaching her final adult height of 157 cm (SDS -0.86) without hormonal treatment. A combined pituitary hormone stimulation test of anterior pituitary function showed deficiencies of GH, LH and FSH, and low normal serum levels of TSH and

I read with interest the article by Dariva Machado et al., describing the case of Whipple's disease (WD), a systemic infection caused by Tropheryma whipplei that was initially misdiagnosed as sarcoidosis. I congratulate the authors on providing essential diagnostic clues and fully agree with their emphasis on the importance of radiologic findings in distinguishing WD from other granulomatous conditions. I would like to comment on another important differential diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: Whipple's disease (WD) is a rare systemic infection caused by Tropheryma whipplei, often misdiagnosed as seronegative rheumatoid arthritis (RA) due to overlapping clinical features. Delayed diagnosis may lead to multisystem complications, particularly in patients treated with immunosuppressive or biologic therapies.
CASE PRESENTATION: We describe two cases of WD initially misdiagnosed as refractory seronegative rheumatoid arthritis. Both patients were middle-aged men with persistently elevated inflammatory markers and poor responses to multiple biologic treatments. One developed c

Tropheryma whipplei, the causative agent of Whipple's disease, is a rarely diagnosed pathogen that typically presents as a chronic, multisystemic illness. While its role in blood culture-negative endocarditis (BCNE) is increasingly recognised-accounting for approximately 4% of such cases-its other cardiac manifestations remain underappreciated. We report a case that underscores the broader cardiac implications of Whipple's disease, emphasising the diagnostic challenges faced when typical findings are absent. This report aims to raise awareness among cardiologists about the spectrum of cardiac

The health of doctors and nurses is of paramount importance because they must be well to perform their jobs optimally under difficult conditions. However, the challenge of their working environment and the culture of their professions often lead to physical and mental illnesses. Despite this, there are several barriers to doctors and nurses seeking healthcare. In this study, the health status and health maintenance practices of doctors and nurses at two hospitals in Kingston, Jamaica, were assessed. This population was previously reported to have a 27% prevalence of probable mental distress ba

BACKGROUND: Elastofibroma dorsi (ED) is a rare benign soft tissue tumour that usually occurs in the subscapular region of the back. Clinical presentation often includes the presence of a painless, slowly growing mass in the infrascapular region, which may be accompanied by shoulder discomfort or restricted movement.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to contribute to the existing literature on the long-term outcomes of Elastofibroma dorsi by examining a series of 13 patients' clinical features, imaging data, demographical data, and pre- and post-operative functional scores and also to investigate th

BACKGROUND: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common and growing problem and a leading cause of child referrals to Child and Adult Mental Health Services (CAMHS). It is a drain on resources across nationally funded support agencies and associated with negative outcomes such as early criminality, school disruption and antisocial behaviour. Mainstream interventions (pharmacological and behavioural) demonstrate effectiveness whilst implemented, but are costly, often have unwanted side effects and do not appear to be affecting long-term outcomes.Development of a robust evidence

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: Calcium and vitamin D play major roles in calcium homeostasis and skeletal development, especially during pregnancy. This study was conducted to determine changes in calcium, 25 hydroxy [25(OH)] vitamin D3 and other biochemical factors (PTH, osteocalcin, alkaline phosphatase, magnesium, phosphorus) related to calcium homeostasis and bone turnover during pregnancy and compare the values to those of non-pregnant women.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In a cohort study, 48 pregnant women, in their first trimester of pregnancy (12+/-2.7 weeks), from 5 prenatal care centers, and 47 n

Whipple's disease (WD) is a rare infectious disease caused by Tropheryma whipplei , which primarily affects the gastrointestinal tract but may also involve the joints, central nervous system, and skin. Although cutaneous manifestations are often overlooked, they can provide valuable diagnostic clues. We report the case of a 54-year-old male with long-standing seronegative migratory polyarthritis refractory to conventional treatment, who subsequently developed multiple subcutaneous inflammatory nodules and systemic symptoms. Histopathological examination of these lesions revealed a non-vasculit

We describe a rare pediatric case of an eight-year-old boy with Down syndrome who developed Hirschsprung's disease in the neonatal period and was later diagnosed with Crohn's disease, representing an exceptionally uncommon clinical overlap. The patient experienced a complex clinical course marked by necrotizing enterocolitis, intestinal perforation, multiple abdominal surgeries, and persistent gastrointestinal dysfunction from infancy. Despite definitive surgical management of Hirschsprung's disease, he continued to have chronic diarrhea, malabsorption, failure to thrive, and recurrent inflamm

BACKGROUND: Congenital tufting enteropathy (CTE) is a rare autosomal recessive enteropathy characterized by intractable watery diarrhea independent of feeding, electrolyte imbalances and severe malnutrition. The aim of this case series is to highlight the characteristic yet easily overlooked histological features of tufting enteropathy, especially in cases where initial biopsies may be reported as nonspecific, and to emphasize the importance of clinicopathological correlation and genetic confirmation.
CASE PRESENTATION: Here we report 3 patients with tufting enteropathy who have the character

BACKGROUND: The introduction of second-generation antipsychotics (SGAs) over the past 2 decades generated considerable optimism that better antipsychotic treatments for schizophrenia and bipolar disorder were possible. SGAs offer several tolerability benefits over first-generation antipsychotics (FGAs), particularly with respect to extrapyramidal symptoms. However, SGAs can induce serious metabolic dysregulations, especially in drug-naive, first-episode, and child and adolescent populations, with olanzapine and clozapine having the highest propensity to cause these abnormalities. In this conte

UNLABELLED: Pseudomonas aeruginosa AG1 (PaeAG1) is a Costa Rican strain that was isolated in 2010 in a major Hospital. This strain has resistance to multiple antibiotics such as β-lactams (including carbapenems), aminoglycosides, and fluoroquinolones. PaeAG1 is considered critical (Priority 1) due to its resistance to carbapenems, and it was the first report of a P. aeruginosa isolate carrying both VIM-2 and IMP-18 genes encoding for metallo-β-lactamases (MBL) enzymes (both with carbapenemase activity). Owing to these traits, we have studied this model for 10 years using diverse approaches inc

Background Celiac disease is a chronic immune-mediated enteropathy triggered by gluten in genetically susceptible individuals. Its presentation is variable and may range from classic malabsorptive symptoms to atypical or extraintestinal manifestations. Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is a common extraintestinal presentation and may occur without gastrointestinal symptoms, which can delay diagnosis. Objective To determine the hospital-based proportion of celiac disease among patients with iron deficiency anemia at Cheikh Khalifa International University Hospital, Casablanca, Morocco, and to descri

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review investigates how advances in breath testing (BT), small bowel (SB) culture, metagenomics, metatranscriptomics, transcriptomics and proteomics are reshaping the definition and diagnosis of small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO). It also discusses whether SIBO should be redefined as part of a larger group of microbial overgrowth syndromes.
RECENT FINDINGS: Recent studies identify distinct hydrogen-, methane-, and hydrogen sulfide-associated overgrowth phenotypes, termed SIBO, intestinal methanogen overgrowth (IMO), and intestinal sulfide overproduction (ISO)

CONTEXT: Genetic diversity is important for adaptation and persistence of populations. It is influenced by many scale-dependent factors including demographic history and interactions with surrounding landscape, including the availability of habitat.
OBJECTIVES: We aim to determine the independent and interactive effects of habitat amount and habitat fragmentation on red squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris) genetic diversity. We also assess the spatial and temporal scales at which habitat amount and fragmentation have the strongest impacts on genetic diversity.
METHODS: We deployed over 1100 hair tube

A double scenario characterizes the epidemiology of HIV infection in children. In countries where highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) is available, the pattern of HIV infection is evolving into that of a chronic disease, for which control strictly depends on patients' adherence to treatment. In developing countries with no or limited access to HAART, AIDS is rapidly expanding and is loaded with a high fatality ratio, due to the combined effects of malnutrition and opportunistic infections. The digestive tract is a target of the disease in both settings. Opportunistic infections play a

INTRODUCTION: The EndoFLIP (for its acronym in English: endoluminal functional luminal probe) is a system that measures in real time the compliance index of the gastroesophageal junction and secondary esophageal peristalsis, based on the principle of impedance planimetry. Although this technology is relatively new and its diagnostic usefulness is still being evaluated, its use in clinical practice is increasingly recognized, fundamentally in those patients where there is no conclusive manometric diagnosis of esophageal motor pathology, mainly esophagogastric junction outflow obstruction and ac
