Short bowel syndrome (SBS) is one of the leading causes of intestinal failure in children. Its development is influenced not only by the length and function of the residual intestine but is also closely related to the homeostasis of the gut microbiota. In recent years, the role of the gut microbiota in intestinal adaptation, metabolic regulation, and the development of complications in pediatric SBS has gradually garnered attention. This review summarizes the characteristics of the gut microbiota, mechanisms underlying dysbiosis, associations with complications, and microbiota-targeted therape

BACKGROUND: Familial Mediterranean Fever (FMF) and Celiac Disease (CD) are two distinct inflammatory disorders that arise through different immunological pathways, yet they show a notable tendency to coexist, particularly in Mediterranean populations. The immunological consequences of this coexistence have not been adequately characterized.
OBJECTIVE: We set out to compare serum cytokine profiles and explore potential genetic interactions in patients with both FMF and CD versus those with FMF alone or CD alone. One hundred adult patients were enrolled and divided into three groups: 40 with co

UNLABELLED: To evaluate differences in health-related quality of life (HRQoL) between child self-reports and parent-proxy assessments in children and adolescents with celiac disease (CeD) using the CeD Dutch Questionnaire (CDDUX), and to describe disease-specific HRQoL patterns across the included populations. A systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted according to PRISMA guidelines. Studies assessing HRQoL in pediatric CeD using the CDDUX questionnaire were identified through PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar, and Cochrane Library databases. Pooled analyses were performed using random-e

Short bowel syndrome (SBS) is the leading cause of chronic intestinal failure in adults, arising when the residual small bowel can no longer absorb the macronutrients, water, and electrolytes needed to sustain health without intravenous supplementation. Its management is, at its core, a nutritional problem. This narrative review summarises and critically appraises current evidence and guideline recommendations on the two pillars of that management: dietary (oral/enteral) therapy and parenteral nutritional support. We frame both around the two variables that dominate clinical behaviour, namely

INTRODUCTION: Future physiotherapists may contribute to multidisciplinary care for individuals with celiac disease; however, evidence regarding their knowledge levels remains limited. This exploratory study aimed to address this gap.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 297 physiotherapy students. Data were collected online using a researcher-developed 30-item questionnaire assessing knowledge of celiac disease symptoms, diagnosis-treatment, and disease-related considerations. Knowledge scores were calculated based on correct responses, with a maximum score of 59, and st

Celiac disease is often associated with gut microbiome alterations, which may play a role in autoimmunity to gluten peptides and upregulation of other autoinflammatory pathways. Probiotics of various formulations have been evaluated in attempts to normalize the gut microbiome and/or improve symptoms in Celiac disease, and even to potentially prevent Celiac disease in at-risk individuals. These studies have shown mixed results at best, and conclusions about the effectiveness of probiotics to these ends are limited by the variations across studies' probiotic formulation, dietary regimen, and cli

Background/Objectives: A lifelong gluten-free diet (GFD) is the only treatment for celiac disease (CD). However, current methods for monitoring GFD adherence do not accurately assess gluten exposure. Stool detection of gluten immunogenic peptides (GIP) may provide an objective tool for detecting recent gluten exposure. The aim of this study was to evaluate stool GIP detection, compared with serology and the validated Biagi dietary questionnaire, for monitoring GFD adherence in children with CD. Methods: In this prospective multicenter study, pediatric patients with CD on a GFD for at least 1 y

BACKGROUND: Persistent gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms are frequently reported in patients with coeliac disease (CD). Knowledge about the role of disorders of gut-brain interaction (DGBI) as the cause of these persistent symptoms remains limited.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the prevalence and factors associated with DGBI-compatible symptom profiles in individuals with CD on a long-term gluten-free diet (GFD).
METHODS: Adult members of the Dutch Coeliac Society completed an online survey, including the Rome IV diagnostic questionnaire and validated questionnaires assessing psychological distress, non

INTRODUCTION: Sjögren disease and celiac disease share autoimmune pathogenesis, and their association is well established. Anti-ɑ-fodrin antibodies (AFAs) are recognized markers of Sjögren disease, yet their prevalence in celiac disease has not been assessed. We sought to determine the frequency of AFAs (immunoglobulin A [IgA] and IgG) in adult patients with active celiac disease and compare it with that of a healthy control group.
METHODS: A total of 81 adult patients with active celiac disease confirmed by serology and duodenal biopsy were retrospectively included. A total of 90 age-matched

UNLABELLED: Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection is prevalent worldwide, and its potential protective role in allergic and immune diseases has been a topic of speculation. This systematic review aims to analyse recent literature to establish a consensus on this relationship. Articles published in the past 12 years regarding association of H. pylori and various allergic diseases were screened. Thirty-five articles from three databases were assessed for bias using the ROBINS-E tool. Objective data from each article were collected for this review. Among the reviewed articles, 14 focused on a

Celiac disease (CD) is an immune-mediated disorder frequently associated with autoimmune diseases (ADs) and nutritional deficiencies. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and spectrum of additional ADs and autoimmune polyglandular syndromes (APS), as well as micronutrient deficiencies, in adults with biopsy-confirmed CD. This prospective observational study included 102 adults with previously diagnosed, biopsy-confirmed CD who were under regular outpatient follow-up. Demographic and clinical characteristics, additional ADs, APS subtypes, laboratory parameters, micronutrient deficiencie

BACKGROUND: Celiac disease (CD) is a chronic autoimmune condition that occurs in genetically predisposed individuals when they consume gluten. The α-gliadin peptide exacerbates the CD pathological process by inducing oxidative stress, intestinal cell damage, and apoptosis. Addressing oxidative stress in CD may offer a valuable strategy for supplementary treatment.
RESULTS: Black soybean peptides (BSPs) have been shown to inhibit oxidative stress and inflammation, although the specific mechanisms are not fully understood. This study investigated the effects of BSPs on Caco-2 cytotoxicity induc

The invention in this patent application relates to 6,9-dihydro-5H-imidazo-[1,2-a]-[1,4]-diazepine derivatives (or their N-oxides) represented herein by formula 1. These compounds are peripherally restricted, positive allosteric modulators of one or more GABA-A receptors. They selectively target the peripheral nervous system and body organs and do not substantially penetrate the blood-brain barrier. Thus, they may provide useful treatment for irritable bowel syndrome and other related peripheral disorders, including, but not limited to, functional abdominal pain, chronic idiopathic diarrhea, v

BACKGROUND: Homocysteine (Hcy) is a critical biomarker for cardiovascular risk stratification, but significant between-method variability in China can result in classification discordance relative to candidate reference measurement procedure (cRMP), including both positive discordance and negative discordance of hyperhomocysteinemia. We aimed to establish a cRMP and evaluate its ability to correct method-dependent classification discordance.
METHODS: An isotope-dilution liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (ID-LC-MS/MS) cRMP for serum Hcy was developed and validated. Five routine me

BACKGROUND: Whipple disease (WD) is a rare, potentially fatal infection caused by Tropheryma whipplei (TW). Central Nervous System involvement (CNS-WD) is a severe complication of WD with a challenging diagnosis, due to limited data integrating neurological features, imaging, cerebrospinal fluid analysis, PCR, and intestinal histopathology. Prompt recognition and treatment are essential to improve patient outcomes.
METHODS: A scoping review of the literature from 2000 to 2025 was conducted, including all CNS-WD case reports and series, to outline its clinical spectrum and diagnostic workup.

BACKGROUND: Paroxysmal dyskinesia (PD) in dogs comprises episodic, involuntary, nonepileptic movement disorders. Recent evidence suggests that PD may be associated with gluten sensitivity, paralleling human gluten-related neurologic syndromes.
HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVES: Characterize clinical features, gastrointestinal comorbidities, gluten-related serology, and response to a gluten-free diet (GFD) in dogs with presumptive gluten-sensitive PD. We hypothesized that dietary modification would decrease episode frequency, particularly in dogs with gastrointestinal signs, seropositivity for anti-gliadi

BACKGROUND: Strict management of a gluten-free diet (GFD) is the only effective treatment for coeliac disease; support in current healthcare frameworks focususes primarily on dietary support and intestinal recovery. However, psychological and social processes that shape gluten-free living are less often addressed, despite high levels of emotional burden among people with coeliac disease. There is limited guidance on how these needs should be met in routine support.
OBJECTIVE: To co-design an evidence-informed framework integrating dietary, behavioural and psychological support for adults livi

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the association between follow-up regularity and dietary adherence, growth, and micronutrient status in children with celiac disease (CD). In this single-center, prospective observational study, children on a gluten-free diet (GFD) for ≥ 1 year were classified over a fixed 24-month window as regular follow-up (RFU; ≥ 4 visits) or irregular follow-up (IFU; < 4 visits) according to the number of outpatient visits. Adherence was assessed by parent- and child-reported modified Biagi scores and by anti-tissue transglutaminase IgA (TGA) normalization (< 20 RU

We evaluated the feasibility to lengthen small bowel endoscopically utilizing a spring device constrained by an engineered, slow biodegrading, hyaluronan and elastin-like protein (HELP) hydrogel as a potential treatment for short bowel syndrome. While we previously demonstrated that the HELP hydrogel could provide device confinement and enable non-invasive device removal, here we demonstrate that the HELP hydrogel can also be designed to be catheter-injectable while still being stiff enough to achieve device confinement. Six pigs underwent endoscopic spring-mediated distraction enterogenesis (

This case report presents the first simultaneous occurrence of Chiari malformation type 1 and celiac disease in a 27-year-old male patient. To the best of our knowledge, there are no previously published cases in the literature. This rare association suggests that nutrient malabsorption caused by celiac disease may exacerbate the symptomatic severity of Chiari malformation. We recommend screening for celiac disease in patients diagnosed with Chiari malformation who present with anaemia, vitamin deficiency or unexplained gastrointestinal complaints. Conversely, in the presence of atypical neuro
