BACKGROUND: In this study we present our experience in the surgical treatment of complicated Meckel's diverticulum.
METHODS: The data of eight patients who underwent surgery due to complications of Meckel's diverticulum between 1994-2001 was retrospectively assessed.

Cecal volvulus is a rare cause of intestinal obstruction after major abdominal surgery. A case of cecal volvulus occurring in the early postoperative period after left colon resection for malignancy is presented. Clinical evaluation and plain abdominal radiographs suggesting cecal volvulus prompted laparotomy and correction. Delay in diagnosis results in high mortality, and treatment depends largely on the viability of the involved intestine. This report describes the second case of cecal volvulus complicating a left colectomy. It was treated by detorsion and reperitonealization cecopexy.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative intussusception is an uncommon and sometimes forgotten cause of postoperative intestinal obstruction in children.
METHODS: Eleven consecutive cases of postoperative intussusception during a period of 16 years (1981-1997) were analysed retrospectively.
RESULTS: Symptoms developed after a median period of 5 days after operation. With one exception, postoperative intussusception was not diagnosed before reoperation. In ten of the 11 cases the intussusception was successfully treated with intraoperative manual reduction.

BACKGROUND: The fear of anastomotic complications prevents the spread of the use of the biofragmentable anastomosis ring (BAR) in intestinal surgery.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 453 patients underwent intestinal resection and anastomosis with the BAR.
RESULTS: In all, 514 anastomoses have been carried out, 424 (83%) in elective settings, and 90 (18%) in emergency. Fifty-one patients had multiple anastomoses. Results of surgical treatment of 4389 patients with gastroduodenal ulcer were analysed. Relaparotomy (RL) was performed in 215(4.9%) of patients for postoperative complications occurred, including 78(36.3%)--for an acute early postoperative ileus (AEPI). RL was performed in 44.3% of patients after perforated gastroduodenal ulcer suturing in 34.3%--after gastric resection, in 28.8%--after organ preserving operations. Main measures providing the effectiveness of surgical aid rendering to the AEPI patients are an early diagnosis and timely RL performance.

Laparoscopic herniorrhaphy is still a controversial procedure. Two cases of intestinal obstruction after laparoscopic herniorrhaphy are reported. The clinical features, possible mechanisms, managements, and outcomes were analyzed. The results showed that preexisting mesenteric defect, fibrin depositions, and longer operation time were predisposing factors for post-laparoscopic herniorrhaphy intestinal obstruction. These findings suggest that cleansing of fibrin deposition and shorter operation times may be important to avoid postoperative intestinal obstruction.
