INTRODUCTION: In this study, we investigated radiological changes in the sigmoid colon in chagasic patients by comparing their colon lengths and caliber with those of non-chagasic living in the same region and non-chagasic living at high altitudes.
METHODS: A total of 317 individuals were evaluated using clinical, serological and radiological methods and divided into three groups: 1) one hundred and nine non-chagasic individuals from Uberaba, Brazil; 2) sixty-one non-chagasic from Puno, Peru; 3) one hundred forty-seven chagasics examined in Uberaba, being 62 without megacolon (3A), 72 with me

OBJECTIVE: Abdominal tuberculosis (TB) is a relatively rare disease in most of Europe and the typical clinical and sonographic findings in this setting have not been studied. We aimed to define sonographic findings that should alert an examiner to the possibility of abdominal TB in a low endemic region.
METHODS: Case records of 17 patients with proven (n = 11) or highly likely (n = 6) abdominal TB detected in the gastrointestinal ultrasound unit at a German tertiary care center in 2003-2013 were analyzed retrospectively. Findings were compared with reported series from high-prevalence regions

AIM: Megacolon, chronic dilation of a colonic segment,is accompanied by extensive myenteric neuron loss. However, this fails to explain unequivocally the formation of megacolon. We aimed to study further enteric structures that are directly or indirectly involved in colonic motility.
METHOD: From surgically removed megacolon segments of seven Chagasic patients, three sets of cryosections from oral, megacolonic and anal zones were immunohistochemically quadruple-stained for smooth-muscle actin (SMA), synaptophysin (SYN, for nerve fibres), S100 (glia) and c-Kit (interstitial cells of Cajal, ICC

Chagasic megaoesophagus and megacolon are characterised by motor abnormalities related to enteric nervous system lesions and their development seems to be related to geographic distribution of distinct Trypanosoma cruzi subpopulations. Beagle dogs were infected with Y or Berenice-78 (Be-78) T. cruzi strains and necropsied during the acute or chronic phase of experimental disease for post mortem histopathological evaluation of the oesophagus and colon. Both strains infected the oesophagus and colon and caused an inflammatory response during the acute phase. In the chronic phase, inflammatory pr

BACKGROUND: Chagas disease, caused by the flagellate parasite Trypanosoma cruzi affects 8-10 million people in Latin America. The mechanisms that underlie the development of complications of chronic Chagas disease, characterized primarily by pathology of the heart and digestive system, are not currently understood. To identify possible host genetic factors that may influence the clinical course of Chagas disease, Human Leucocyte Antigen (HLA) regional gene polymorphism was analyzed in patients presenting with differing clinical symptoms.
METHODOLOGY: Two hundred and twenty nine chronic Chagas

Chronic Chagas' disease is frequently characterized by massive myenteric neuron loss resulting in megacolon with severely and irreversibly disturbed motility. Here, we focused on two submucosal neuron populations, immunoreactive for calretinin (CALR) or somatostatin (SOM), and their respective mucosal nerve fibres in chagasic megacolon. Surgically removed megacolonic segments of seven chagasic patients were compared with seven age- and region-matched non-chagasic control segments. Evaluation included immunohistochemical triple-staining of cryosections for CALR, SOM and peripherin or for CALR a

We report a patient with megacolon associated with TcVI infective lineage form of Trypanosoma cruzi. Although this megacolon was considered idiopathic, Chagas disease was suspected and diagnosed because of the concomitant cardiovascular involvement. Based on this case, we discuss the suitability of Chagas diagnosis in patients with tract motility involvement.

INTRODUCTION: Megacolon, chronic dilation of a colonic segment, is a frequent sign of Chagas disease. It is accompanied by an extensive neuron loss which, as shown recently, results in a partial, selective survival of nitrergic myenteric neurons. Here, we focused on the balance of intramuscular excitatory (choline acetyltransferase [ChAT]-immunoreactive) and inhibitory (neuronal nitric oxide synthase [NOS]- as well as vasoactive intestinal peptide [VIP]-immunoreactive) nerve fibres.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: From surgically removed megacolonic segments of seven patients, three sets of cryosectio

INTRODUCTION: Since 1970, lengthening of the rectosigmoid has been suspected to be a solitary manifestation of Chagas colopathy.
METHODS: To test this hypothesis, opaque enema was administered on 210 seropositive and 63 seronegative patients, and radiographs in the anteroposterior and posteroanterior positions were examined blind to the serological and clinical findings. The distal colon was measured using a flexible ruler along the central axis of the image from the anus to the iliac crest.
RESULTS: Dolichocolon was diagnosed in 31 (14.8%) seropositive and 3 (4.8%) seronegative patients. Th

In addition to neurons, interstitial cells of Cajal (ICC) play an important role in coordinating intestinal motility with a pacemaker function. This study aimed to quantitatively analyze ICC, neurons, and muscular area, the latter to correct for quantitation errors resulting from dilation in case of a megacolon and from the dispersion of ICC that can be attributed to muscular hypertrophy. We analyzed 30 colon samples: ten chagasic megacolon (CM), ten chagasic colons without megacolon (CXM), and ten nonchagasic control patients (NC). We measured the area of muscularis propria and counted the nu

Chagas' disease is one of the most serious parasitic diseases of Latin America, with a social and economic impact far outweighing the combined effects of other parasitic diseases such as malaria, leishmaniasis and schistosomiasis. In the chronic phase of this disease, the destruction of enteric nervous system (ENS) components leads to megacolon development. Previous data presented that the regeneration tax in the ENS neurons is augmented in chagasic patients. Although, there are several neuronal types with different functions in the intestine a detailed study about the regeneration of every ne

BACKGROUND/AIMS: In Chagasic megacolon, there is a reduction in the population of interstitial cells of Cajal. It was aimed to evaluate density of Cajal cells in the resected colon of Chagasic patients compared to control patients and to verify possible association between preoperative and postoperative bowel function of megacolon patients and cell count.
METHODOLOGY: Sixteen megacolon patients (12 female; mean age 54.4 (31-73)) were operated on. Pre- and postoperative evaluation using Cleveland clinic constipation score was undertaken. Resected colons were examined. Cajal cells were identifi

Abdominal tuberculosis in children usually presents with involvement of the peritoneum, lymph nodes or gastro-intestinal tract. Disease of the gastro-intestinal tract is commonest in the ileocaecal region. A 10-year-old girl presented with abdominal pain and fever of 15 days duration. Abdominal CT detected dilated small bowel loops with enlarged mesenteric nodes and barium meal follow-through demonstrated a small annular stricture in the jejunum, suggestive of jejunal tuberculosis. She was treated with anti-tuberculous chemotherapy and corticosteroids, to which she made a good response. Tuberc

In developing countries, tuberculosis (TBC) is commonly associated with inadequate socio-economic and sanitary conditions. Currently, in Western countries, TBC is often linked with HIV infection, an ageing population or trans-global migration. Approximately two out of ten TB cases worldwide are extra-pulmonary, of which abdominal tuberculosis accounts for 11%-16%. The Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex involves the abdomen as primary or secondary localization (hematogenous spread or from pulmonary foci or infected neighbouring organs). Abdominal TBC can infect the gastrointestinal tract, perit

AIM: Chagas' disease is an endemic parasitosis found in Latin America. The disease affects different organs, such as heart, oesophagus, colon and rectum. Megacolon is the most frequent long-term complication, caused by damage to the myoenteric and submucous plexus, ultimately leading to a functional barrier to the faeces. Patients with severe constipation are managed surgically. The study aimed to analyse the 10-year minimum functional outcome after rectosigmoidectomy with posterior end-to-side anastomosis (RPESA).
METHOD: A total of 21 of 46 patients were available for follow up. Patients un

CONTEXT: Chronic Chagas disease (15 million patients; annual incidence, 40, 000 patients; annual mortality, 12 ,500 patients) is the most serious parasitic disease in Latin America. Between 10 and 30 years after infection, 30% of patients with Chagas disease develop heart injury, which is the main reason for its high mortality. Consequently, frequent cardiac diagnostics are required for patients with Chagas disease.
OBJECTIVE: To minimize time-intensive and cost-intensive diagnostics, such as electrocardiography, echocardiography, and radiologic imaging, we tested the effect of measuring seru

CONTEXT: The treatment of Chagas' disease colopathy is limited to clinical management in the initial of the process, and for patients for whom surgery is not indicated or is not possible, anti-constipation diets are used, along with judicious administration of laxatives and enemas.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate over time the effects of physical-therapy interventions combined with daily ingestion of a laxative fruit drink in the treatment of chagasic megacolon.
METHOD: In a quantitative, prospective, and comparative study, 12 patients of both sexes and with a mean age of 67 ± 12 years were clinicall
