PURPOSE: Staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome (SSSS), caused by Staphylococcus aureus producing exfoliative toxins, develops in only a subset of colonized children, suggesting host genetic factors may influence disease susceptibility. Desmoglein-1 (DSG1), a key adhesion protein in the superficial epidermis, is the primary target of these exfoliative toxins. This study examined whether genetic variation in the DSG1 gene is associated with SSSS in children.
METHODS: We conducted a prospective case-control study of children aged 0-5 years, including patients diagnosed with SSSS and age-matched c

In this first part of a two-part continuing medical education series, we examine the impact of Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) resistance and its pathogenic mechanisms, such as toxins, virulence factors, superantigens, quorum sensing, and biofilm formation. Next, we explore how S. aureus infection contributes to delayed wound healing, impetigo, and staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome. Additionally, S. aureus plays a crucial role in the pathophysiology of dermatologic diseases that goes beyond infection, including atopic dermatitis, cutaneous T-cell lymphoma, epidermolysis bullosa, and other

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome (SSSS) is a toxin-mediated dermatologic emergency that predominantly affects infants and young children. Despite its characteristic clinical presentation, data on long-term epidemiologic patterns and antimicrobial susceptibility in pediatric SSSS remain limited. This study aimed to describe demographic features, microbiological findings, and antimicrobial susceptibility trends in children with SSSS over a 10-year period preceding the COVID-19 pandemic.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed children diagnosed with SSSS who were admitte

Desquamating or blistering skin conditions may be referred to burns and plastic surgeons owing to the morphological similarity to burn injuries, given an increasing shortage of dermatology inpatient beds within the context of NHS care. Desquamating skin conditions, similar to burn injuries, carry the potential to be severe, debilitating and potentially fatal; however, they present more complexity owing to their underlying aetiologies. These conditions may present with similar physiological challenges, dressing requirements and need for extensive multidisciplinary input as burn injuries, and th

Staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome (SSSS) is a rare, toxin-mediated skin disorder of childhood, caused by the exfoliative toxins ETA and ETB released by Staphylococcus aureus. We report on a 4-year-old boy who presented with a 5-day history of painful, progressive blistering of the face, trunk and anogenital region. Clinical examination revealed widespread erythema with coarse lamellar desquamation, flaccid blisters and a positive Nikolsky sign; the mucous membranes were spared, an important feature distinguishing SSSS from toxic epidermal necrolysis and Stevens-Johnson syndrome. BACKGROUND: Delayed bathing of newborns has gained popularity, particularly on social media platforms, with influencers promoting delays from 24 h to several weeks. While delayed bathing is endorsed by the World Health Organization for at least 24 h after birth, claims of extended delays are largely anecdotal.
OBJECTIVE: To review current evidence on the effects of delayed newborn bathing on skin barrier function and infection risk, and the influence of social media and culture.
METHODS: Narrative review of peer-reviewed studies on neonatal skin barrier metrics, microbial colonization, and i

Staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome (SSSS) requires empiric anti-staphylococcal antibiotic management, selected based on regional rates of resistance. We report a retrospective chart review of the 58 patients diagnosed with SSSS through dermatology consult in our pediatric emergency department between 2015 and 2024. Only one patient had methicillin-resistant bacteria isolated on superficial bacterial culture, despite antibiogram data from our pediatric emergency department demonstrating methicillin resistance in 39.5%-46.8% of overall isolates growing Staphylococcus aureus. When selecting emp

AIM: This study aimed to describe the epidemiological characteristics and direct healthcare costs of hospitalizations resulting from staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome (SSSS) in Spain, stratified by age group.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective, population-based study included all patients hospitalized with SSSS in Spain between 2016 and 2023. Data were obtained from the Spanish National Hospital Discharge Database and stratified into three age groups for the main analysis: 0-4 years, 5-14 years, and ≥15 years. Outcomes were hospitalization rates per 100,000 admissions and per 1,000,

UNLABELLED: Acute skin failure in children encompasses several life-threatening conditions that can present with strikingly similar, extensive skin detachment despite fundamentally different causes. Staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome (SSSS), toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN), and severe cutaneous bacterial infections may look almost identical at the bedside, yet differ profoundly in mechanism, treatment, and prognosis. The objective of this study is to describe four consecutive pediatric cases of acute skin failure and to derive a practical, bedside diagnostic approach that helps distinguish

Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) is a causative agent of a wide range of infections such as staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome, toxic shock syndrome, necrotizing pneumonia, endocarditis, and osteomyelitis, posing a significant challenge in clinical management. This study explores the antibacterial potential of lawsone on S. aureus using experimental and computational methods. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of lawsone (alone and in combination with erythromycin, tetracycline, norfloxacin and ciprofloxacin) on 8 clinical multi-drug resistant S. aureus was evaluated in vitro. The a

Erysipelas is an acute bacterial infection of the skin and lymphatic vessels, predominantly caused by Streptococcus pyogenes. Atypical localizations such as the trunk, as well as rare clinical variants including bullous or multifocal erysipelas, may complicate the diagnostic process and require differentiation from other blistering or widespread erythematous conditions, such as staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome (SSSS), toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) or cellulitis. In immunocompromised or oncologically pretreated patients, erysipelas should be considered even in unusual presentations.

PURPOSE: Treatment of staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome (SSSS) typically covers methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) and methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA). However, limited data exist to show an optimal antibiotic regimen. We hypothesized that empiric antibiotic treatment without MRSA coverage is noninferior to empiric treatment with MRSA coverage for children hospitalized with SSSS.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort noninferiority analysis. Patients with SSSS admitted from January 2014 to October 2024 to our quaternary care children's hospital were included.

BACKGROUND: The influence of pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI) and gestational weight gain (GWG) on perinatal outcomes of women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) remains unclear. Therefore, we explored how the above indicators influence pregnancy outcomes in women with PCOS.
METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted involving the baseline characteristics, laboratory data, and pregnancy outcomes of 722 pregnant women with PCOS. Subjects were grouped in a way to find out risks in their pregnancy outcomes. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was performed to investigate how BMI a

OBJECTIVES: To perform systematic assessment of ovarian reserve markers using a combination of tests in juvenile systemic lupus erythematosus (JSLE) patients without amenorrhoea.
METHODS: Twenty-seven consecutive JSLE female patients and 13 healthy controls without amenorrhoea were evaluated for 6 months. Ovarian reserve was assessed during early follicular phase by serum levels of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinising hormone (LH), estradiol, inhibin A, inhibin B and anti-Mullerian hormone (AMH). Ovarian size was measured by abdominal ultrasonography. Demographic data, disease acti

Preterm infants have well-documented deficiencies in their innate and adaptive immune responses, which are indirectly correlated with their gestational age at birth. They also exhibit low levels of circulating immunoglobulins due to the lack of maternal transplacental IgG transfer during the third trimester of pregnancy. These factors place them at a particularly high risk for infectious diseases after birth. Diagnosing infections that primarily manifest through abnormal skin findings can be challenging, given overlapping characteristics attributed to bacterial and yeast pathogens. The case pr

Staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome (SSSS) is a rare, infectious entity whereby the systemic distribution of Staphylococcal toxins results in the development of multiple symptoms, the most notable of which is a desquamative rash. Ecthyma gangrenosum, a skin infection most frequently occurring in immunocompromised individuals, is similarly uncommon. Herein, we present the case of two young siblings presenting with SSSS following the development of ecthyma gangrenosum. Prompt treatment of the Staphylococcal infection led to resolution of symptoms and recovery. Our case highlights the need to be

Staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome is an exfoliative skin eruption associated with specific exotoxin-producing strains of Staphylococcus aureus. Affliction of adults is considerably rare, and most such patients have pre-disposing co-morbidities. A unique such infection of an immunocompetent adult without risk factors is detailed. Current concepts of disease process and treatment are highlighted for staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome among adults.
