Necrotizing fasciitis associated with Acinetobacter lactucae and Bacillus paramobilis infections in 2 dogs.

Two immunocompetent dogs from separate households were presented to a tertiary referral hospital with soft tissue wounds attributable to severe bacterial infection. A 5-y-old, castrated male Golden Retriever dog (case 1) was presented with extensive hemorrhagic cellulitis of the forelimbs and neck that developed over 48-h and was attributable to Acinetobacter lactucae infection. Additionally, an 8-y-old, spayed female Labrador Retriever-mix dog (case 2) sustained a deep penetrating wound over the left hip that progressed over 24 h to necrotizing fasciitis, from which Bacillus paramobilis was i

Lower limb and feet wound image dataset.

A comprehensive wound-related image repository was developed to address critical gaps in existing medical imaging resources, particularly the lack of balanced datasets representing both healthy and pathological lower-limb conditions. The collection comprises 5443 images sourced from two complementary streams: real-world clinical wound cases and controlled acquisition of healthy feet images. The wound component includes 2686 expertly annotated images representing eight clinically significant wound types-diabetic, pressure, trauma, venous, surgical, arterial, cellulitis, and miscellaneous catego

The Influence of Peripheral Artery Disease on Postoperative Complications Following Open Reduction and Internal Fixation for Ankle Fractures.

BACKGROUND: Peripheral artery disease (PAD) has been associated with an increased risk of wound complications and surgical site infection following open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) for ankle fractures. However, longer-term outcomes, including fracture healing, remain poorly characterized. This study evaluates the association between PAD and short- and long-term postoperative complications following ankle ORIF. METHODS: The TriNetX Research Network was queried to identify patients who underwent isolated unimalleolar, bimalleolar, trimalleolar, or syndesmotic ORIF for ankle fractures

Severe Periocular Inflammatory Reaction Mimicking Necrotizing Fasciitis following Hyaluronic Acid Microinjections: A Case Report and Literature Review.

INTRODUCTION: Hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers are widely utilized in esthetic medicine for facial rejuvenation, including in the periocular region. Although generally considered safe, severe inflammatory responses can occur. This report describes a case of a 42-year-old woman who developed a significant periocular reaction following HA microinjections, clinically resembling necrotizing fasciitis. CASE PRESENTATION: The patient, with no significant medical or ophthalmic history, presented to the emergency department with acute periocular swelling, redness, and an inability to open her right eye 3

Recurrent Superficial Thrombophlebitis Secondary to Migrated Silicone: A Diagnostic Challenge.

BACKGROUND: Lower extremity swelling is a common clinical presentation with a broad and overlapping differential diagnosis. Although recurrent cellulitis may be commonly seen in such cases, the coexistence of migratory superficial venous thrombophlebitis and chronic edema is uncommon, particularly in the absence of varicose veins. Delayed complications of cosmetic silicone fillers are increasingly recognized; however, vascular manifestations remain rare. CASE SUMMARY: We report a 39-year-old woman with a 3-year history of recurrent bilateral lower extremity edema, cellulitis, and migratory su

Risk factors and exploratory clustering of complications after reconstruction following Mohs surgery: A national NIH All of Us study.

BACKGROUND: Mohs micrographic surgery (MMS) is an important surgical technique in the management of non-melanoma skin cancer; however, knowledge of the outcomes from Mohs reconstruction remains limited. The advent of nationwide databases coupled with advanced statistical and exploratory analytic approaches affords an opportunity to address this critical knowledge gap. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of 6062 patients from the NIH All of Us Research Program who underwent reconstruction after MMS within 3 months of a skin cancer diagnosis. Demographics, comorbidities, and proc

Visual Representation of Clinical Conditions Across Skin Tones in Nursing Textbooks: A Quantitative Image Analysis.

BACKGROUND: As the U.S. population becomes increasingly diverse, the persistent underrepresentation of dark skin tones in nursing educational materials constitutes a critical concern. The foundational textbooks used in prelicensure nursing programs often fail to illustrate how clinical conditions present on darker skin, thereby undermining students' assessment and diagnostic competence and perpetuating health care disparities. PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate how prelicensure nursing textbooks visually represent clinical conditions across diverse skin tones, with a focus on the extent to

Trends and Economic Burden of Odontogenic Infections in Peri-Urban Ghana.

BACKGROUND: Severe odontogenic infections (OIs) are caused by dental caries, which have a sequelae of periodontal disease and periapical abscess. In clinical practice, there are sometimes sudden surges in odontogenic infections. Seasonal surges of dental emergencies have been documented with studies attributing these to public holidays when dental offices do not operate. The seasonal patterns however of OIs, be it rainy or dry season peaks of odontogenic infections, remain unexplored in the study area. The reasons behind such trends are not well understood either. METHODOLOGY: The study utili

Pseudocellulitis in a patient with non-small cell lung cancer on carboplatin, pemetrexed and pembrolizumab.

A man in his 60s with metastatic lung adenocarcinoma receiving carboplatin, pemetrexed and pembrolizumab presented with subacute bilateral lower limb oedema and erythema. After hospital admission for investigation and treatment with intravenous flucloxacillin, the symptoms did not initially improve. Having considered the broad differential diagnoses, we suspected a rare and poorly understood phenomenon: pseudocellulitis secondary to pemetrexed. Pemetrexed is a chemotherapy used in non-small cell lung cancer that targets enzymes involved in DNA/RNA synthesis. Subsequently, pemetrexed was withhe

Incorporating Lymphedema Reconstruction into Breast Reconstruction: Concepts, Approach, and Systematic Review.

Breast cancer-related lymphedema (BCRL) remains a common and morbid consequence of axillary lymph node dissection (ALND) and radiotherapy (RT). As reconstructive microsurgery has advanced, there is increasing interest in integrating lymphatic surgery into breast cancer pathways-both as primary prevention at the time of ALND and as secondary treatment combined with breast reconstruction. We performed a systematic review to synthesize current concepts, techniques, and evidence supporting integrated breast and lymphatic reconstruction. PubMed and Web of Science were searched from inception to Dec

Homoeopathic Management of a Lower Leg Ulcer with Cellulitis: An Evidence-Based Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Cellulitis is an acute bacterial infection involving the dermis and subcutaneous tissue, characterized by erythema, warmth, swelling, and pain. It commonly follows disruption of skin integrity and may progress to ulceration. Leg ulcers are chronic or acute breaches in skin continuity of the lower limb, frequently associated with infection, inflammation, delayed healing, and significant morbidity. When cellulitis complicates a leg ulcer, the risk of tissue damage and prolonged recovery increases. Although antibiotics constitute standard management, integrative approaches are increas

Pre- and peri-hematopoietic cell transplant management of disseminated non-Helicobacter pylori Helicobacter infection in X-linked agammaglobulinemia: Case series and literature review.

Non-Helicobacter pylori Helicobacter (NHPH) species are recognized as a cause of chronic systemic infection, cellulitis, and osteomyelitis in patients with X-linked agammaglobulinemia (XLA). Diagnosis and treatment are challenging due to fastidious growth, lack of standardized therapies, and frequent recurrence. We describe two cases of disseminated NHPH infection in XLA, including a patient where allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplant (HCT) was incorporated into management to achieve durable immune reconstitution and cure infection. One patient with disseminated Helicobacter bilis osteomyel

Orbital Abscess in an Infant With STAT3 Hyper-IgE Syndrome.

Orbital cellulitis (OC) is a rare diagnosis in infants, with limited numbers of cases reported in the literature to date. We report a 34‑day‑old female who presented with severe left-sided periorbital swelling and proptosis. Imaging confirmed a large orbital abscess with associated ethmoid sinusitis, and she underwent urgent exploration and drainage and initiation of broad‑spectrum intravenous antibiotics. Cultures grew methicillin‑sensitive Staphylococcus aureus. Postoperatively, she developed leukocytosis, eosinophilia, and recurrent skin abscesses, prompting immunologic evaluation. Genetic

Beyond the orbit: Odontogenic cellulitis with an unusual retinal complication.

We present an unusual clinical case of odontogenic orbital cellulitis (OOC) complicated by a serous macular detachment (SMD), an extremely rare association. A 61-year-old patient presented with blurred vision, severe ocular pain, and proptosis. Imaging studies revealed orbital cellulitis secondary to an apical abscess of an upper molar. Although retinal involvement is uncommon in OOC, in this case the SMD represented an atypical and striking manifestation, highlighting the importance of considering unusual retinal complications in orbital infections. Combined treatment with intravenous antibio

Early Calciphylaxis Mimicking Infection in a Patient With End-Stage Renal Disease and Sarcoidosis: A Diagnostic and Wound Management Challenge.

Calciphylaxis is a rare, life-threatening disorder primarily affecting patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) on dialysis. Early lesions can mimic infection, leading to delays in diagnosis and wound-directed care. We describe an atypical early presentation of calciphylaxis in a patient with ESRD and sarcoidosis, initially misdiagnosed as cellulitis. Despite early sodium thiosulfate therapy and metabolic control, the patient developed progressive necrotic wounds. This case underscores that calciphylaxis can progress despite controlled mineral metabolism and standard therapy, particularly

Diagnostic value of trichoscopic findings of hair and scalp in dissecting cellulitis: case report and review of the literature.

Dissecting cellulitis of the scalp (DCS) is an infrequent, chronic inflammatory scalp condition that predominantly affects hair follicles and results in scarring alopecia if untreated. The pathogenesis remains poorly documented and challenging to diagnose. This case highlights the value of trichoscopy as a non-invasive imaging technique in the diagnosis of DCS. We report the case of a 28-year-old female with a one-year history of worsening scalp lesions and hair loss. Examination revealed hairless nodules of the scalp, associated with exudation and pigmentation. Trichoscopy revealed significan

Dissecting Cellulitis of the Scalp: A Case Report.

Dissecting cellulitis of the scalp, also commonly referred to as dissecting folliculitis, is a rare, chronic, relapsing, suppurative disease characterized by painful nodules, purulent drainage, burrowing, and interconnecting abscesses. Dissecting cellulitis disproportionately affects Black males in early and mid-adulthood and may result in cicatricial alopecia, scarring disfigurement, and impaired quality of life. This narrative introduces a representative case of dissecting cellulitis in an adult Black male, summarizes the epidemiology, etiology, pathology, and evaluation of the condition, re
