OBJECTIVE: Laparoscopic surgery has become increasingly prevalent in modern gynecologic practice. However, this approach is not without risks. The most dangerous step is insufflation of the abdomen using a Veress needle or the blind creation of the camera port at the beginning of the surgery. Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) is used in patients requiring long-term nutritional support and is more physiological than parenteral nutrition. Eczema herpeticum (EH) is a superimposed cutaneous viral infection that occurs in the context of preexisting dermatoses, most commonly atopic dermatitis (AD). Erysipelas is an acute bacterial infection of the skin and lymphatic vessels, predominantly caused by Streptococcus pyogenes. Atypical localizations such as the trunk, as well as rare clinical variants including bullous or multifocal erysipelas, may complicate the diagnostic process and require differentiation from other blistering or widespread erythematous conditions, such as staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome (SSSS), toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) or cellulitis. In immunocompromised or oncologically pretreated patients, erysipelas should be considered even in unusual presentations.

We describe two canine cases of cutaneous infection caused by Serratia marcescens. A 2-year-old castrated male mixed dog (Case 1) presented with multiple ulcerations on the dorsal trunk, which were observed 4 days after shampooing. A 4-year-old male wolf shepherd mix dog (Case 2) presented with ulceration and purulent discharge on the nasal bridge. Cytological examination of both cases revealed pyogranulomatous inflammatory cells with rod-like infectious agents identified as S. marcescens in aerobic bacterial culture. Both patients were treated with oral antibiotics and topical chlorhexidine.
