Wound care in hard-to-reach populations: rough sleepers.

People sleeping rough commonly develop wounds and other skin disorders. Wounds vary and develop for multiple reasons. They include acute wounds such as burns, infected injection sites, abscesses and cellulitis, as well as chronic wounds such as pressure ulcers; rough sleepers have a high prevalence of lower limb wounds. Skin and soft tissue infections are common, especially in people who inject drugs via subcutaneous or intramuscular routes. Emergency departments are often the pathways into healthcare for homeless people as traditional health and care systems often fail to meet their needs. Ac

Epidermoid Cyst of the Maxillary Sinus: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Epidermoid cysts are rare benign lesions that can derive from abnormally situated ectodermal tissue during embryological development or from implanted epithelium after trauma or surgery. In the oral and maxillofacial regions, epidermoid cysts usually develop in the floor of the mouth and rarely in other sites. We describe a rare case of an epidermoid cyst arising in the right maxillary sinus. A 29-year-old man with a known diagnosis of Marfan syndrome presented with progressive swelling and tenderness in the right buccal region, mimicking facial cellulitis, and refractory to medical treatment.

Comparing Different Donor Sites After Vascularized Lymph Node Transfer to the Lymphedematous Upper Limb: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of Clinical Outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Vascularized lymph node transfer (VLNT) involves the microvascular transplantation of functional lymph nodes from a donor site into a limb affected by lymphedema to restore the normal flow of lymphatic fluid. Despite the increasing clinical experience with VLNT, there remains insufficient data to support its routine use in clinical practice. Here, we aim to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of VLNTs for upper limb lymphedema and compare clinical outcomes when using different donor sites. METHODS: We carried out a systematic search of the literature through PubMed and Scopus da

Clinical phenotypes of sarcoidosis using cluster analysis: a Spanish population-based cohort study.

OBJECTIVES: Sarcoidosis is a clinically heterogenous disease. The objective of this study is the identification of clinical phenotypes using cluster analysis. METHODS: A model-based clustering relaying on 19 clinical variables was performed in a retrospective cohort of 342 sarcoidosis patients, diagnosed and followed-up from 1999 to 2019 in a tertiary hospital at Northern Spain. Chi-square test and ANOVA were used to compare categorical and continuous variables among groups. Two-sample t-tests and the partition of Pearson's chi-square statistic were used in pairwise comparisons. The Wasfi sev

Campylobacter fetus Cellulitis.

Campylobacter fetus, a bacteria of the Campylobacter genus that are a group of bacteria known to cause intestinal infections, is a particular microbial agent due to its most common presentation being as a non-intestinal systemic infection and rarely as a focal infection, most frequently cellulitis. C. fetus's main reservoirs are cattle and sheep. Humans are usually infected by consuming raw milk and/or meat. Infection in humans is rare and generally related to immune deficiencies, malignancy, chronic liver disease, diabetes mellitus and elderly age, among other factors. Diagnosis is usually ac

Evaluation of Clostridium septicum hemolytic activity, administration route, and dosage volume of a clostridial dermatitis (cellulitis) bacterin-toxoid on humoral immune response in commercial turkeys.

Clostridial cellulitis or dermatitis affects commercial turkey flocks, primarily as they approach market age. In the field, this disease has been effectively controlled with antibiotics, but alternatives to antibiotics are needed. Bacterin-toxoid vaccination programs have been shown to prevent clostridial diseases in other species, including humans. Results from previous field studies indicate that vaccination with an experimental whole-cell Clostridium septicum (CS) bacterin-toxoid oil emulsion vaccine reduced clostridial dermatitis-associated mortality and antibiotic usage for some commercia

Facial tinea incognito: a clinical, dermoscopic and mycological study of 38 cases.

BACKGROUND: Tinea incognito (TI) is a dermatophytic infection of the skin that is modified by steroid use. As a result, it shows atypical clinical presentations that can lead to misdiagnosis. TI occurring on the face is most frequently misdiagnosed as cutaneous fungal infection, however, very limited information is available on facial TI. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to characterize the clinical, dermoscopic and mycological features of facial TI. MATERIALS & METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated 38 patients with mycologically proven facial TI at a single institution in Korea between July, 20

Dissemination of blaNDM-5-carrying IncX3-type plasmid among non-clonal Escherichia coli strains colonising a dog with a skin infection caused by a carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae, United Kingdom.

A successful outcome of a post-surgical wound infection management by a carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae is described in a dog. Four multidrug-resistant and carbapenem-resistant Escherichia coli strains belonging to ST410 (n = 1) and ST648 (n = 3) were isolated from faecal samples and nasal swabs of this dog at admission to a veterinary hospital in the United Kingdom, and one month after discharge. Whole-genome sequencing analysis suggests dissemination of a 46,161-bp IncX3 blaNDM-5-carrying plasmid among E. coli strains from the different lineages. In this study, the E. coli ST648 s

Evaluation of laboratory risk indicator for necrotizing fasciitis score as an early diagnostic tool for necrotizing fasciitis: a prospective observational study.

INTRODUCTION: From its historical identification to modern times with advancements in management modalities globally, the mortality of necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is high ranging from 19 to 30% for all affected sites. Although many diagnostic adjuncts have been developed to assist with the prompt and accurate diagnosis of NF, the primary diagnosis is still based on high clinical suspicion. The Laboratory Risk Indicator for Necrotizing Fasciitis (LRINEC) score was developed as a tool for distinguishing NF from other soft tissue infections. The main objective of this study is to evaluate LRINEC a

Flat Warts (Verrucae Planae) Confined to the Pigment of a Tattoo: A Rare Tattoo-associated Complication.

Tattoos are a form of decorative body art in which pigment dyes of different colors are inoculated into the skin. It is estimated that 15-25% of general population has one or more tattoos (1), and the reasons for the popularity of this procedure may include greater social acceptance, aesthetic appeal, or perhaps the option of using laser removal techniques to eliminate unwanted tattoos. Even though modern professional tattoos are usually performed in sterile conditions, complications still occur, and with increasing numbers of people getting tattoos, the incidence of tattoo-associated side-eff

Interventions for bacterial folliculitis and boils (furuncles and carbuncles).

BACKGROUND: Bacterial folliculitis and boils are globally prevalent bacterial infections involving inflammation of the hair follicle and the perifollicular tissue. Some folliculitis may resolve spontaneously, but others may progress to boils without treatment. Boils, also known as furuncles, involve adjacent tissue and may progress to cellulitis or lymphadenitis. A systematic review of the best evidence on the available treatments was needed. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of interventions (such as topical antibiotics, topical antiseptic agents, systemic antibiotics, phototherapy, and inci

Septic sacroiliitis in the post-partum period with haematogenous spread.

Pelvic pain is a very common gynaecological complaint especially during the puerperium. It is rarely associated with development of septic sacroiliitis or haematogenous spread to other sites within the body. The case below demonstrates a 30 year old female 10 days post-partum presenting with left hand cellulitis secondary to development of septic sacroiliitis. Her case supplements a small cohort of reports among literature identifying septic arthritis in the postpartum period, recognises the delay to diagnosis and increased morbidity of this condition.

Recurrent Cellulitis Associated with Acupuncture with Migratory Gold Threads.

In Asian countries, acupuncture with gold threads has been widely used in the treatment of pain. However, several reports have suggested that the implanted gold threads can become fragmented and migrate to other parts of the body, damaging surrounding tissues. A 75-year-old female presented with diffuse erythematous edema with multiple vesicles on the right lower leg for 3 days. She had previously suffered from cellulitis on the same region twice for the last 1 year. Her past medical history included acupuncture with gold threads on the back due to lumbar herniated nucleus pulposus (HNP) about
