[A family imported case of dengue fever. Case report].

Dengue fever is the most common zoonotic infection with a transmissible mechanism of virus transmission in tropical and subtropical countries. In the first two decades of the 21st century, a significant increase in dengue fever cases was registered in more than 120 countries worldwide. The article presents a family imported case of dengue fever in a 34-year-old man and a 35-year-old woman who fell ill within 3 days after returning from Thailand (Phuket Island). In both cases, there was an acute onset of the disease with an increase in body temperature to (39-40°С), severe weakness, severe musc

Abdominal manifestations of Q fever.

OBJECTIVES: Hepatopathy of the steatosis type, splenopathy, and a hypoechoic enlarged gallbladder on abdominal ultrasonography are indications of sudden inflammation affecting the abdominal region. Such a clinical picture due to Q fever is common. However, infectious etiologies for primary mesenteric adenitis are rare. METHODS: A complete biochemistry and clinical examination of the patients, followed by a spectrum of serological and molecular biological tests were performed to detect a causative agent of a very serious, highly infectious illness. RESULTS: Here we report two exceptional case

Lymph node tuberculosis mimicking axillary hidradenitis: a case report.

Hidradenitis is a chronic benign pathology with acute manifestations, mainly occurring among young patients with hyper seborrhea. Its clinical presentation is an inflammatory, nodular and fistulized aspect. It affects many body parts, making its location a referral criterion for diagnosis. Our patient had, indeed, a clinical aspect of hidradenitis. However, pathology revealed that it is tuberculosis lymphadenitis.

Long-Term Benzathine Penicillin Prophylaxis Lasting for Years Effectively Prevents Recurrence of Dermato-Lymphangio-Adenitis (Cellulitis) in Limb Lymphedema.

Background: The lymphedema-affected limbs are predisposed to acute and, subsequently, chronic dermato-lymphangio-adenitis (DLA) episodes in around 40%-50% of cases, irrespective of what the primary etiological factor is for the development of this condition. DLA is of bacterial etiology, and it needs antibiotic control and prevention of recurrence. Our aim was to follow the effects of years-long continuous no-break administration of benzathine penicillin on the recurrence of acute DLA episodes. Methods and Results: Two hundred thirty-one patients were affected with lymphedema of lower and uppe

Prevalence of Rotaviruses in the Etiology of Acute Diarrhea in Young Children, Clinical forms, Extraintestinal Manifestations and Complications.

Rotavirus is highly contagious factor with dominant feces-oral transmission. Because it is stable in external environment, transmission clusters are possible by close contact, ingestion of contaminated water or food or contact with contaminated surfaces. It survives within hours and days on hands and contaminated surfaces. This makes it the most common enteric and nosocomial pathogen in the world, especially in early childhood. In addition to the rapid dehydration with pronounced electrolyte disturbances, numerous extraintestinal possibilities have been recorded in the clinical picture, which

Contributions to the lymphatic filariasis elimination programme and post-elimination surveillance in China by NIPD-CTDR.

China was once one of the most heavily endemic for lymphatic filariasis (LF), with a heavy disease burden. Due to decades of sustained efforts, LF was eliminated from China in 2007. The historical tales in the control and elimination of LF in China and current post-elimination surveillance are reviewed and concluded. In the course of LF control and elimination, National Technical Steering Group for Filariasis Control and Research, and Collaborating Research Group on the Transmission Threshold of Filariasis, led by the National Institute of Parasitic Diseases, carried out researches, developed

Unilateral inguinal lymphadenitis caused by Yersinia pseudotuberculosis. A case report.

Acute inguinal lymphadenitis is usually caused by lower extremity infection and sexually transmitted diseases, such as chancroid, lymphogranuloma venereum, genital herpes, or syphilis. Yersinia pseudotuberculosis is a non-spore forming, pleomorphic, non-lactose fermenting Gram negative bacillus and a member of the family Enterobacteriaceae, which is associated with diarrheal diseases. It also causes mesenteric lymphadenitis at the terminal ileum, which can be clinically indistinguishable from acute appendicitis (pseudoappendicitis). However, lymphadenitis in other regions caused by the organis

Is the presence of echo-rich periportal cuffing in the liver indicator for abdominal inflammation in pediatric patients?

AIMS: Hyperechoic/echo-rich periportal cuffing (ErPC) is defined as an increase in echogenicity relative to the adjacentliver parenchyma. Thickening in the periportal area may occur with proliferation of bile ducts, hemorrhage, oedema, fibrosis, inflammatory changes or a combination of these. The aim of this study is to determine which intraabdominal inflammatory diseases are associated with the presence of ErPC in the pediatric population and to calculate the sensitivity and specificity of this finding. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In this prospective study 200 consecutive children who underwent abd

The role of abdominal ultrasound in the management of excessive crying in infants.

Excessive or persistent crying is a common presentation to the pediatric emergency department, and often poses a diagnostic dilemma to emergency physicians. There are several reasons for excessive or persistent crying in children, ranging from benign causes like hunger, to life-threatening causes such as intussusception. The objective of this work is to specify the place of abdominal ultrasound in the diagnosis and management of incessant cries in the infant. A cross sectional investigation for 3 months about cases of infants admitted for excessive or persistent crying to the paediatric emerge

Ectopic Enterobius Vermicularis Infestation; An Extremely Rare Cause Of Mesenteric Lymphadenopathy Mimicking Tuberculous Lymphadenitis.

Enterobius vermicularis (EV) is a pinworm which commonly resides in the lumen of the intestinal tract and lays eggs on the perianal skin. However, rarely the worm can infest various other sites in the body and cases with infestation of such ectopic sites have been reported in literature. Rare cases of mesenteric lymph node involvement have also been reported. We report a case in a young male who presented with signs and symptoms of acute appendicitis. During surgery, enlarged mesenteric lymph nodes were identified. Histological examination revealed adult worm in the appendiceal lumen. Histolog

Unusual case of cerebral demyelination and bilateral optic neuritis in an infant with suppurative BCG lymphadenitis.

Cerebral demyelination and optic neuritis are often seen in children with acute disseminated encephalomyelitis following various infections and immunisations. An eight month old girl presented with a left axillary lymph node swelling and an erythematous lace-like rash over her cheeks and trunk. She then developed acute encephalopathy, bilateral nystagmus, right hemiparesis and left facial nerve palsy. Her electroencephalogram showed an encephalopathic process and visual evoked response study were grossly abnormal. Her MRI brain showed hyperintensities in the midbrain, pons and bilateral cerebe

Acute Nonspecific Mesenteric Lymphadenitis: More Than "No Need for Surgery".

Acute nonspecific, or primary, mesenteric lymphadenitis is a self-limiting inflammatory condition affecting the mesenteric lymph nodes, whose presentation mimics appendicitis or intussusception. It typically occurs in children, adolescents, and young adults. White blood count and C-reactive protein are of limited usefulness in distinguishing between patients with and without mesenteric lymphadenitis. Ultrasonography, the mainstay of diagnosis, discloses 3 or more mesenteric lymph nodes with a short-axis diameter of 8 mm or more without any identifiable underlying inflammatory process. Once the

Abdominal lymphadenopathy in an adolescent with Kawasaki disease: a major sign?

In adolescence, Kawasaki disease (KD) may present with varied clinical pictures, and the classic clinical criteria are often insufficient to establish the diagnosis. This report presents a clinical case of KD in an adolescent and a brief review of the relevant literature, based on a PubMed search using the terms "adolescence" and "KD". A 13-year-old girl presented with fever, rash, hepatomegaly, and ultrasonographic evidence of abdominal lymphadenopathy. On week 2 after onset of symptoms, the patient developed desquamation of the extremities and thrombocytosis. Echocardiography was normal duri

A Twenty-Three-Year-Old Man with a Chronic Anterior Chest Wall Wound, Eosinophilia, and Elevated IgE-Job's Syndrome.

A 23-year-old man presented with a chronic anterior chest wall wound. Previously he had a split thickness skin graft in the area in where the wound bed had become infected, developing a thick purulent drainage. The infected skin graft was excised. Histologic examination of the failed graft revealed skin with surface ulceration, focal abscess formation, deep penetrating acute and chronic inflammation with numerous eosinophils, and granulomatous changes demonstrating a foreign body-type reaction to fungal hyphae (highlighted by periodic acid-Schiff staining, Figures 1A-E). The patient's past med

Extensive cervical lymphadenitis mimicking bacterial adenitis as the first presentation of Kawasaki disease.

Cervical adenitis >1.5cm in diameter is the less frequently observed criteria in patients with Kawasaki disease and it is usually found in association with other symptoms during the acute phase. Moreover, the finding of fever and lymphadenitis with intense local signs of inflammation and phlegmon is rarely seen as the initial manifestation of Kawasaki disease. We report the case of a 7-year-old boy who had cervical lymphadenitis with adjacent cellulitis and phlegmon mimicking bacterial adenitis as the first presentation of Kawasaki disease. The patient had fever, cervical lymphadenitis with ad

Mediastinal tubercular lymph node eroding into pericardium causing acute pyopericardium and cardiac tamponade.

Cardiac tamponade due to tuberculosis is a well-known complication. However, acute erosion of TB lymphadenitis and its caseous material into the pericardium causing pericardial tamponade is rare. We describe a case of extensive mediastinal tubercular lymph node mass in which the caseous necrotic material found its way into pericardial sac causing acute pyopericardium and cardiac tamponade.

Kikuchi-Fujimoto disease: retrospective study of 91 cases and review of the literature.

Kikuchi-Fujimoto disease (KFD) is a rare cause of lymphadenopathy, most often cervical. It has been mainly described in Asia. There are few data available on this disease in Europe. We conducted this retrospective, observational, multicenter study to describe KFD in France and to determine the characteristics of severe forms of the disease and forms associated with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). We included 91 cases of KFD, diagnosed between January 1989 and January 2011 in 13 French hospital centers (median age, 30 ± 10.4 yr; 77% female). The ethnic origins of the patients were European

Feasibility of conservative medical treatment for pyoderma gangrenosum.

Facial swelling is a common clinical problem in pediatric patients. The causes of swelling are diverse, and knowledge of the typical clinical and imaging manifestations and the most common sites of occurrence of these conditions is needed to formulate a differential diagnosis. The general clinical manifestations may be classified into the following four groups: (a) acute swelling with inflammation, (b) nonprogressive swelling, (c) slowly progressive swelling, and (d) rapidly progressive swelling. Conditions that may account for acute swelling accompanied by inflammation include lymphadenitis,

[Mesadenitis in children with acute abdominal pain syndrome: clinical and echographic parallels].

The paper pools the experience of ultrasound assessment of acute mesadenitis in children with acute abdominal pain syndrome. It reviews the literature on its etiology, pathology, and diagnosis and treatment principles. B-mode and Doppler echograms made by general practice ultrasound diagnosticians are shown. The technique is demonstrated to be effective and of informative value in the early stages of diagnosis in the patient contingent in question.
