Aqueous dispersion resin (ADR) is a water-based acrylate copolymer designed to allow a range of ethanol concentrations for hair-spray formulations. A series of inhalation (whole-body) aerosol toxicity studies, including acute, 9-day, and 90-day exposures, was conducted to determine any toxicological effects for ADR. An acute study of ADR was conducted for 4 h with a 14-day observation period. OBJECTIVES: To assess the routine use of diagnostic laparoscopy and laparoscopic appendicectomy in women with a clinical diagnosis of acute appendicitis.
METHODS: Women who presented with a clinical diagnosis of acute appendicitis between 1 January 1992 and 31 August 1993 were prospectively assessed and 107 underwent diagnostic laparoscopy.

Acute lymphatic filariasis developed in an American traveling recreationally to Asia. The illness was characterized by fatigue, eosinophilia, and lymphedema of the arm and chest wall, but no lymphangitis, lymphadenitis, or pain. Complete resolution occurred over 1-2 years. We discuss this syndrome and describe the use of new diagnostic tests in its diagnosis and management.

Urgent sonographic examination of the groin was performed in 58 patients under the age of two years. Accurate diagnosis was done in conditions such as: incarcerated inguinal hernia, twisted undescended testis, incarcerated ovary in inguinal hernia and others. An infection with Yersinia strains may develop with the picture of acute appendicitis. Laparotomy will then not reveal an acutely inflamed appendix, but will often show mesenteric lymphadenitis or acute terminal ileitis. These conditions have been observed in four patients. The differential diagnostic possibilities are discussed. It is pointed out that acute terminal ileitis is practically never transformed into chronic terminal ileitis (Crohn's disease).

The gross and microscopic pathologic changes in 70 cases of serologically proven enteric infections with Yersinia pseudotuberculosis are presented. The highest incidence was in young males, and the commonest infecting organism belonged to serologic O-group I. Clinically, the illness resembled acute appendicitis, but the most consistent finding at laparotomy was mesentric lymphadenitis. A prospective, randomized, double-blind study on the effect of cephaloridine prophylaxis in the surgical management of appendicitis was performed. Of the 139 patients studied, 70 received cephaloridine and 69 received placebo prophylaxis. Both groups of patients were well matched with regard to age, sex, operative findings, and bacteria isolated at operation. The present study shows that appendicitis and its associated peritoneal inflammation produce microscopic and biochemical changes in the peritoneal membrane. With increasing age, the peritoneal concentrations of DNA, RNA, nitrogen, hydroxyproline, and uronic acids seemed to decrease. A case of terminal ileitis, mesenteric lymphadenitis and appendicitis is reported. Serological studies indicated infection with Yersinia pseudotuberculosis type VA. The patient's illness ran a chronic course necessitating resection of the terminal ileum. Histological examination of the appendix and a mesenteric lymph node in the acute stage revealed granulomas with central necrosis. This is the first human case in which the subtype VA has been identified.
