INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Epidermoid cysts are developmental cysts of the retrorectal space. They are benign lesions resulting from ectodermal inclusion during neural tube closure. Generally, they are misdiagnosed given that symptoms are often vague and nonspecific. They have a high infection rate (up to 30%) and can be easily mistaken for perirectal abscesses.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of an epidermoid cyst in a 58-year-old woman with a retrorectal cyst mistaken for a perianal abscess, which was initially incised and drained and then, after MRI investigation, an anterior resect

BACKGROUND: Pilonidal sinus disease (PNSD) is considered as the challenging disease for surgeons since decades. The term pilo-nidal is derived from Latin meaning "nest of hair". It is a commonly occurring disease usually involved young male adults. It is considered as an acquired condition with unidentified aetiology and pathogenesis. The objective was to observe the results of Limberg's flap operation in patients with Pilonidal sinus disease..
METHODS: We performed an observational study at Hamdard University Hospital from 1st January 2016 to 31st December 2019 on patients who came to the ou

BACKGROUND: Pilonidal disease may present as acute abscesses or chronic draining sinuses. There is no standardized treatment and recurrence rates can be as high as 30%. Within our five-hospital network we have established a standardized treatment protocol including minimally invasive surgical trephination and aggressive epilation. We hypothesize that such a treatment protocol can be established across different hospital settings and lead to low overall recurrence.
METHODS: Patients with pilonidal disease were enrolled in the study on presentation to our hospital network. Those that underwent

Background Pilonidal sinus disease (PSD) is a chronic inflammation and infection of the sacrococcygeal region. It often affects young adult males and produces clinical findings with abscess and discharge in the sacrococcygeal region or painful sinus tract in the natal cleft. The best surgical technique for sacrococcygeal PSD is still disputed. This study aimed to compare the Karydakis flap technique (KFT) and Limberg flap technique (LFT) used in the surgical treatment of the sacrococcygeal pilonidal sinus. Methodology A total of 140 patients diagnosed with pilonidal sinus between 2010 and 2012

BACKGROUND: Surgical treatment for pilonidal abscess is the gold standard, but not yet well codified. Different techniques proposed can be conservative or radical.
AIMS: The aim of our study was to compare postoperative outcomes of both methods in one-stage treatment strategy.
METHODS: This is a comparative study including patients operated on for pilonidal abscess, with a satisfactory postoperative follow-up, over a period of 4 years. We looked for the occurrence of postoperative recurrence in the medical records or by interviewing reachable patients.
RESULTS: We analyzed 57 patients: 33 m

There are 2 mainstays of sacrococcygeal pilonidal disease (SPD) treatment: non-operative and surgical. None of them was superior, and it was associated with some degree of recurrence. Crystallized phenol treatment is a non-operative procedure performed in outpatient settings. This retrospective study aimed to asses crystallized phenol treatment in patients with primary and recurrent SPD and the factors that influence disease recurrence. A total of 92 patients were included and followed up. Crystallized phenol was administered in an outpatient setting under local anesthesia. All demographic, pa

OBJECTIVE: Many observational studies have shown that obesity strongly affects skin and soft tissue infections (SSTIs). However, whether a causal genetic relationship exists between obesity and SSTIs is unclear.
METHODS: A two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) study was used to explore whether obesity is causally associated with SSTIs using a publicly released genome-wide association study (GWAS). An inverse-variance weighted (IVW) analysis was used as the primary analysis, and the results are reported as the odds ratios (ORs). Heterogeneity was tested using Cochran's Q test and the I2 stat

OBJECTIVE: Pilonidal Sinus is a considerably problematic disease due to its recurrences which tend to become chronic and are exacerbated by abscess formation. There is little consensus regarding treatment - most probably due to limited understanding of its pathophysiology and progression. Despite this, it is accepted that accurate identification of pathogenesis and the clinical grade of PS are crucial for the determination of surgical approach.
METHOD: This study presents the surgical treatment techniques we employed for Pilonidal Sinus disease with retrospective analysis of management and fo

Pilonidal sinus is a common problem encountered in proctology clinics. It has a wide spectrum of clinical picture ranging from a single asymptomatic pit to a more complex disease with multiple sinuses and secondary openings. Hence, the treatment options could range from observation or simple excision to a more radical approach like flap surgeries. Ultrasonographic assessment could help in mapping the extent of the pilonidal sinus. It can also identify whether the sinus is infected or has formed an abscess. With the above-mentioned information provided by the point of care ultrasound, the surge

Incomplete obliteration of urachus during the fetal period can lead to urachal abnormalities. One of these abnormalities is the urachal sinus that can be asymptomatic, or it can be symptomatic by becoming infected or being malignant, and it can mimic other diseases' symptoms. Although it is rare in adults, it should be considered a significant differential diagnosis in patients with abdominal pain or umbilical discharge. This article presents a young patient with urachal sinus mimicking umbilical pilonidal sinus symptoms.

Dear Editor, Pilonidal cyst disease is a common, acquired, inflammatory disease predominantly affecting the natal clefts of the buttocks (1,2). The disease has a predilection for men, with a male-to-female ratio of 3-4:1. Patients are generally young, towards the end of second decade of life. Lesions are initially asymptomatic, while the development of complications such as abscess formation is associated with pain and discharge (1). Patients with pilonidal cyst disease may present to dermatology outpatient clinics, especially when the disease is asymptomatic. Herein we report the dermoscopic

OBJECTIVE: To assess the success of treatment methods at reducing recurrence, the most important problem in pilonidal sinus disease (PSD), along with factors affecting the occurrence of PSD and posttreatment recurrence.
METHODS: The researchers retrospectively analyzed files of patients treated for PSD between 2003 and 2018. Three study groups were created: G1, G2, and G3. G1 included all PSDs with recurrence, and a comparable number of cases without recurrence were selected randomly for the G2 group. The control group, G3, included healthy individuals without PSD. In all groups, the followin

Pilonidal sinus is a well-known disease of the sacrococcygeal region, which is caused by hair shafts penetrating the epidermis. The granulomatous reaction is the characteristic of this chronic inflammatory disease. Umbilical pilonidal sinus is an acquired disease that may appear in many guises and mimic several umbilical conditions. Several risk factors for developing the disease have been described. Treatment is based on clinical experience rather than on evidence-based medicine. The umbilical pilonidal sinus, which is not treated medically or surgically, may cause regional or generalized inf

BACKGROUND: Pilonidal disease (PD) is a common condition of the sacrococcygeal region leading to inflammation and abscess formation. PD is a topic of renewed interest due to the lack of satisfactory management options. Minimally invasive techniques have recently been investigated, with promising results in adult and pediatric populations. Our technique, the "EPIC procedure," Endoscopic-assisted Pilonidal Irrigation and Cleaning, involves removal of hair under direct visualization using a small endoscope while flushing saline through the cavity via an angiocatheter. We aim to show that the EPIC

Pilonidal sinus (PNS) is a clinically diagnosed condition caused by hair entrapment underneath the skin leading to a granulomatous reaction and the formation of a tract. PNS is commonly found in the sacrococcygeal area (natal cleft). However, this is a rare case presentation of a male patient with PNS located at the back of his neck region as there were only four similar conditions reported in the literature review. The patient was first managed medically as a case of hidradenitis suppurativa by the dermatology department. Later on, when the treatment failed, he was treated surgically as a cas

(1) Background: Several techniques for the treatment of pilonidal sinus disease (PSD) are in vogue, though none have emerged as the gold standard. Laying open (deroofing) and curettage under local anesthesia is one of the most straightforward procedures to treat PSD. In this study, the long-term follow-up in a large series was analyzed. (2) Methods: The laying open approach was performed for all types of consecutive PSD patients-simple, complicated, and abscess. The primary outcome parameter of the study was the healing rate. The secondary outcome parameters were operating time, hospital stay,

BACKGROUND: The present German National Guideline is an updated version of previous Guideline published in 2014. It aims to compare various treatment methods and to assist physicians with evidence-based recommendations.
METHODS: Systemic literature review.
RESULTS: Three types of disease manifestation could be differentiated: asymptomatic disease, an acute abscess, and the chronic pilonidal disease. At present, there is no treatment method fulfilling all desired criteria: simple, painless procedure associated with rapid wound healing, and low recurrence rate. Thus, treatment modality should

Background: Minimally invasive surgical (MIS) techniques for pilonidal sinus disease (PNS) have gained popularity in recent years, due to faster recovery and lower complication rate compared with conventional methods. Our aim was to assess recurrence rate following MIS Trephine procedure for PNS and to identify possible risk factors for recurrence. Materials and Methods: A prospective cohort, including patients who underwent PNS Excision by Trephine MIS Procedure over 5 years in a large tertiary medical center was established. Patient data were collected from medical charts and patient telepho

BACKGROUND: A number of different treatment algorithms are recommended for the treatment of an acute pilonidal abscess and a chronic pilonidal sinus. While a 1-stage surgical procedure using excision or plastic reconstruction according to Limberg or Karydakis is suggested for chronic pilonidal sinus, a 2‑stage procedure is recommended for an acute pilonidal abscess. The aim of this study was to compare the results of the 1‑stage surgery with plastic reconstruction according to Limberg for acute pilonidal abscess and chronic pilonidal sinus in terms of recurrence, disorders of wound healing, in
