Phage therapy against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus pseudintermedius: a novel strategy for canine pyoderma.

INTRODUCTION: Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus pseudintermedius (MRSP) poses a major public health challenge due to its multidrug resistance. Phages represent an innovative therapeutic strategy with considerable potential against drug-resistant bacterial infections. METHODS: In this study, dogs clinically diagnosed with pyoderma were recruited to establish an epidemiological dataset, and multidrug-resistant S. pseudintermedius strains (including 6 MRSP isolates) were obtained from bacterial cultures. Three high-efficiency lytic phages were isolated using these MRSP strains as hosts and ch

Bilateral Idiopathic Pyoderma Gangrenosum: A Case Report of an Atypical Presentation.

Pyoderma gangrenosum (PG) is a rare non-infectious neutrophilic dermatosis which is characterized by a rapidly progressive, painful ulcer. Bilateral manifestation of PG is exceptionally rare and can easily be misdiagnosed as infection or vascular ulceration, delaying proper treatment. A 76-year-old woman presented with painful, crusted ulcers on her bilateral lower legs that developed over 2 weeks. Initially, the lesions erupted as erythematous papules that enlarged rapidly and ulcerated. There was no history of trauma, systemic illness, or prior ulceration. Laboratory tests revealed mild anem

Upadacitinib for the management of refractory hidradenitis suppurativa, psoriasis, and pyoderma gangrenosum.

Dear Editor, Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic immune-mediated skin disease presenting with recurrent inflammatory nodules, abscesses, draining tunnels, and scarring, most commonly in intertriginous sites. Its estimated global prevalence is approximately 1% and its pathogenesis is complex, involving dysregulation of several pro-inflammatory cytokines, including tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α and interleukin (IL)-17. HS frequently coexists with systemic inflammatory conditions, such as axial spondyloarthropathies and inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). Additional associations with dermat

[Fasciitis-like primary breast pyoderma gangrenosum: A rare case report].

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Pyoderma gangrenosum (PG) is a rare condition caused by dermal inflammation with neutrophilic infiltration, often associated with an underlying systemic disease. The breast is an uncommon site for this condition. It is an exclusion diagnosis, challenging to establish, which may initially lead to an alternative one and the initiation of inappropriate treatment. PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 41-year-old woman with a medical history of morbid obesity, breast reduction 14 years ago, common variable immunodeficiency (CVID), and autoimmune thrombocytopenia presented with a sp

From Aortitis to Sweet's: The Immune Spectrum of G-CSF Adverse Events.

BACKGROUND: Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) and its PEGylated formulation (pegfilgrastim) are indispensable for preventing chemotherapy-induced neutropenia and for stem-cell mobilization. Beyond hematopoiesis, G-CSF modulates innate/adaptive immunity and may precipitate immune-mediated events in susceptible hosts. Clinical signals span large-vessel vasculitis/aortitis and non-vascular neutrophil-dominant phenotypes, yet timing, spectrum, and management remain variably characterized. OBJECTIVE: To identify and synthesize primary clinical reports of autoimmune/rheumatic disease tr

Postoperative Pyoderma Gangrenosum: Rare Infection Mimic and Diagnostic Challenge - A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Pyoderma gangrenosum (PG) is a rare neutrophilic dermatosis that can occur in the postoperative period, often mimicking surgical site infections (SSIs). The clinical overlap between PG and SSIs - including erythema, wound dehiscence, and purulent discharge - makes timely diagnosis challenging. CASE PRESENTATION: A 61-year-old female with a history of ovarian cancer and metachronous liver metastasis underwent an open left hemihepatectomy. On the fifth postoperative day, she developed erythema, wound dehiscence, and necrosis unresponsive to broad-spectrum antibiotics. Wound cultures

Increases in One-year Mortality Risk Among Chronic Skin Ulcer Patients During the Period 1980-2020.

Chronic ulcer patients often suffer from multiple comorbidities and may even face increased risk of death. This study investigated short-term mortality of 5,230 ulcer patients treated in tertiary healthcare between 1980 and 2020, and their 15,594 matched references. Hazard risks (HR) for mortality were compared between patients with venous, arterial, mixed, vasculitic, and pyoderma gangrenosum ulcers (PG) and between 4 x 10-year study periods. One-year mortality risk was increased among all ulcer patients over the whole study period (HR 3.8), and it was highest among patients with vasculitic (

[Canine pyoderma: clinical presentation, diagnosis, and topical treatment - a review].

Canine pyoderma is a common dermatological condition that is still frequently treated with systemic antibiotics in small animal practice. In light of increasing antibiotic resistance, particularly due to methicillin-resistant staphylococci, topical therapy is gaining importance. Numerous studies have now demonstrated the efficacy of topical treatments, especially for superficial pyodermas. Chlorhexidine, sodium hypochlorite, benzoyl peroxide, and ethyl lactate are among the most commonly used agents, with chlorhexidine showing the strongest antibacterial effect. In addition to its antimicrobia

Carbon dioxide laser ablation as an alternative or adjunct treatment of Bowenoid in situ carcinoma in five cats.

Case series summaryFive domestic cats diagnosed with Bowenoid in situ carcinoma (BISC) via histopathology were included in this retrospective case series. All cats presented with several dermatologic lesions including but not limited to hyperkeratotic plaques or crusts, focal alopecia, pigmented papules, erosions and secondary pyoderma. The disease was gradually progressive in all cases, with a median time from lesion development to treatment of 365 days (range 84-1614). Of five cats, four had no other clinical signs at the time of presentation; one was pruritic. Each cat was treated with at l

Ultrasound-guided cooled radiofrequency ablation for sacroiliac joint pain in a patient with PsAPASH syndrome: A case report.

PsAPASH syndrome is a rare autoinflammatory disorder comprising psoriatic arthritis, pyoderma gangrenosum, acne, and hidradenitis suppurativa, characterized by severe cutaneous and musculoskeletal manifestations that are often refractory to systemic therapies. Sacroiliitis is a recognized feature of PsAPASH, contributing significantly to functional disability. While cooled radiofrequency ablation has emerged as an effective treatment for chronic sacroiliac joint pain, performing interventional procedures in patients with extensive active hidradenitis suppurativa poses unique challenges due to

Multifocal Osteonecrosis in a Patient With Systemic Lupus Erythematosus and Antiphospholipid Syndrome Associated With Pyoderma Gangrenosum and Other Complications: A Case Report.

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a quintessential illustration of an autoimmune disease. It results from complex interactions that include impaired apoptotic clearance, increased activity of both the innate and adaptive immune systems, complement activation, the development of immune complexes, and ensuing tissue inflammation, which collectively contribute to a sustained autoimmune response. We present a case relating to a 37-year-old female patient (from Ardabil, Iran) who received a diagnosis of SLE and antiphospholipid syndrome (APS), in accordance with established diagnostic criteria.

Successful treatment of severe retroauricular pyoderma gangrenosum with upadacitinib in a patient with Crohn's disease and a history of cerebral venous sinus thrombosis.

Pyoderma gangrenosum (PG) is an immune-mediated skin condition that is commonly associated with inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). Its diagnosis and management are often challenging due to the heterogeneity of the clinical presentation and the need for an individualized therapeutic approach. We present the case of a 19-year-old Caucasian male with Crohn's disease, who received therapy with a biological agent and developed severe PG in the retroauricular region following mastoidectomy for mastoiditis, which was complicated by cerebral venous sinus thrombosis. The diagnosis of PG was made with t

Investigations of Procalcitonin, Interleukin-8 and Defensin-β in Dogs with Superficial and Deep Pyoderma.

Background: Canine pyoderma is a common bacterial skin disease that can be classified as superficial or deep and is associated with inflammatory processes. Systemic inflammatory biomarkers such as procalcitonin (PCT), interleukin-8 (IL-8), and beta-defensin-2 (Defb2) may reflect immune activation; however, their diagnostic and clinical relevance in canine pyoderma remains unclear. Materials and Methods: Serum concentrations of PCT, IL-8, and Defb2 were measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA) in healthy control dogs (group 1, n = 40), dogs with superficial pyoderma (group 2a,
