Skin Infections and Outpatient Burn Management: Skin Infections in Patients With Diabetes.

Diabetes is associated with many complications, including foot ulcers. Individuals with diabetes have a 15% to 25% likelihood of developing a foot ulcer in their lifetime. The pathophysiologic mechanisms are multifactorial but the major etiologic factors are peripheral vascular disease and diabetic neuropathy. Foot examinations are recommended at least annually for patients with diabetes to assess the risk of foot ulcers and to detect, diagnose, and manage them. Management includes avoidance of walking, weight-bearing limitation, use of therapeutic footwear, use of dressings and debridement, a

Interdigital Pedal Erythrasma treated with one-time dose of oral clarithromycin 1 g: Two case reports.

The following are the first detailed cases of Interdigital Pedal Erythrasma successfully treated with a one-time dose of oral clarithromycin 1 g. This is ideal for patients who failed topical therapy or have mechanical or psychosocial restrictions. Treatment provides better compliance, less gastric side effects, and lower treatment costs than oral alternatives.

High Prevalence of Erythrasma in Patients with Inverse Psoriasis: A Cross-sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Inverse psoriasis is characterized by erythematous nonscaly plaques in intertriginous regions. Similarly, erythrasma, a superficial infection caused by Corynebacterium minutissimum (C. minutissimum), is also found in skin folds with red-brown lesions, making the distinction between psoriasis and erythrasma difficult. No studies have previously determined whether these two clinically similar cutaneous disorders can occur concurrently. METHODS: Thirty patients with inverse psoriatic plaques were examined using a standard Wood's lamp to visualize porphyrins associated with C. minutiss

Erythrasma in athletes and football players.

BACKGROUND: Erythrasma is a superficial skin infection that presents with red-brown, flaky macules. It is caused by the Gram-positive bacteria Corynebacterium minutissimum. The purpose of our study is to investigate the prevalence and incidence of erythrasma in active sportsmen, i.e., athletes and football players, comparing the results with the incidence of the disease in the general population. METHODS: A total of 140 sportsmen, 110 male athletes and 30 football players, were examined by clinical examination, microscopic examination (Gram staining), and Wood's lamp examination. RESULTS: Er

Subungual Nail Erythrasma Presenting as Melanonychia: A Rare Finding.

Nail pathology may reflect a wide array of localized and systemic dermatological conditions. Certain nail findings such as melanonychia can create diagnostic challenges even to nail experts. We report a case of a 78-year-old man who presented with melanonychia of the great toe. Nail clipping showed focal melanin deposition, and dermoscopy demonstrated a region of localized erythema in the lunula concerning for possible melanocytic neoplasm. Subsequent nail biopsy showed numerous vertically oriented filamentous bacteria and coccobacilli within the nail plate consistent with a diagnosis of subun

Erythrasma Revisited: Diagnosis, Differential Diagnoses, and Comprehensive Review of Treatment.

Erythrasma is a bacterial infection of the skin typically caused by Corynebacterium minutissimum. This pathogen infects the stratum corneum in warm and wet areas of the skin. Most commonly, the axillary, inguinal, and interdigital regions are affected. A 60-year-old man presented for the examination of a pedunculated lesion on his right proximal thigh. Upon examination of the lesion, adjacent areas of central hypopigmentation and peripheral hyperpigmented scaling were also noted bilaterally in the groin region. Differential diagnoses of candidiasis, dermatophyte infection, erythrasma, pityrias

Primary extramammary Paget's disease: a clinicopathological study of 28 cases.

To analyze the clinical and histopathological manifestations, immunohistochemistry, treatment, and prognostic factors of primary, extramammary Paget's disease (EMPD), we systematically reviewed the clinical presentations, histopathology and follow-up courses of 28 patients with primary EMPD. Clinically, their symptoms and morphology mimicked various types of dermatoses, such as seborrheic dermatitis, eczema, candidiasis, tinea cruris and erythrasma, so the initial diagnosis of EMPD was often delayed or missed. Histopathology showed invasive EMPD, and the tumor cells were mostly solid nests or

Persistent rash on feet.

A 49-year-old Hispanic woman presented with a 4-month history of scaling and a macerated rash localized between her toes. The rash was malodorous, mildly erythematous, and sometimes associated with pruritus. The patient had no relevant medical history. Potassium hydroxide testing was performed and found to be negative. So a Wood's lamp was used to examine the patient's toes--and it revealed the diagnosis. WHAT IS YOUR DIAGNOSIS? HOW WOULD YOU TREAT THIS PATIENT?

Erosio interdigitalis blastomycetica: A review of interdigital candidiasis.

Erosio interdigitalis blastomycetica (EIB) is a Candida infection affecting the third web space, between the third and fourth fingers. In 1915, Gougerot and Goncea first described saccharomycetic organisms isolated from the hands and feet. Johannes Fabry later named it in 1917, well before the genus Candida was introduced in 1923. EIB is most common among those who work with their hands frequently in water, such as dishwashers, launderers, bartenders, and homemakers. Clinical presentation most commonly consists of a central erythematous erosion surrounded by a rim of white macerated skin invol

Influence of low-level laser on pain and inflammation in type 2 diabetes mellitus with diabetic dermopathy - A case report.

Numerous skin lesions have been commonly observed in individuals with diabetes mellitus. The common skin manifestations of diabetes mellitus are erythrasma, xanthomatosis, xanthelasma, phycomycetes and cutaneous infections like furuncolosis, candidiasis, carbuncle, dermatophytosis, etc. Diabetic dermopathy is the most common skin lesion found in patients with diabetes. It is typically seen in men aged above 50 years. In low-level laser therapy (LLLT), the entire lower limb was illuminated with the frequency of 20 Hz and wavelength of 830 nm for 9 min, and the treatment was divided into four pa
