Dermatitis of the folds (intertrigo) is a frequent reason for attending consultations, particularly in Africa, where the hot and humid climate constitute an aggravating factor. It is a complex pathology with multiple and intricate etiologies. The aim of this study was to describe epidemiological and etiological aspects of dermatitis of the folds in black-skinned subjects in Bamako (Mali). We conducted a transversal descriptive survey of cases of localized dermatitis of the folds of the skin in dermatology clinics in Bamako. In total, 141 cases of intertrigo were identified: 96 female subjects

Erythrasma is a superficial skin disease caused by Gram-positive Corynebacterium species. Coral-red fluorescence under Wood's light, strongly suggestive of erythrasma, can be attributed to the presence of porphyrins. Fractionated porphyrin analysis in erythrasma lesions is yet to be reported. We attempted to investigate erythrasma lesions by isolating the responsible bacteria and determining their exogenous porphyrin production by HPLC analysis. We observed a 78-year-old woman with erythrasma who had a well-demarcated slightly scaling patch on her left foot, between the fourth and fifth toes.

Under specific light illumination, particularly ultraviolet (UV) and near-UV light stimulation, the skin produces both specular light reflectance and, possibly, specific fluorescent emission. These properties offer diagnostic clues and disclose some peculiar functions of the skin. A series of superficial infections (erythrasma, some tinea capitis types, tinea/pityriasis versicolor, dermatophytoses, etc.) and pilosebaceous follicles enriched in Propionibacterium spp show fluorescence. This latter characteristic is downgraded or lost while on some anti-acne treatments. A quenching effect of fluo

Antibiotics are used for systemic and topical skin diseases treatment, taking advantage of their antiseptic, bacteriostatic and also their anti-inflammatory and immunomodulating properties. In case of localized external skin layers infections, a topical treatment is adequate. In case of widespread and deeper infections a systemic treatment is needed. The latter dermatological diseases are mostly treated by beta-lactam antibiotics (penicillins and cefalosporins) macrolides and tetracycline. In topical treatment mostly erythromycin, clindamycin, mupirocyne and fusidic acid are used. Most common

Although most skin diseases can be diagnosed with simple visual inspection, laboratory investigations are necessary in several clinical circumstances. This contribution highlights the usefulness of routine diagnostic procedures that are often overlooked and the innovative methods of molecular biology, which are expensive and require an experienced staff. Among the classic diagnostic investigations are (1) the use of Wood's light in many dermatologic disorders (eg, vitiligo, pityriasis versicolor, erythrasma, porphyrias), (2) cytodiagnosis of Tzanck in dermatologic practice (eg, herpetic infect

Under specific light illumination, skin produces peculiar fluorescent aspects. Such property can be used to provide diagnostic arguments or to disclose some peculiar functions of the skin. Some superficial infections (erythrasma, tinea versicolor, dermatophytic tinea,..) reveal fluorescence that may be intense. The pilosebaceous follicles enriched in Propionibacterium spp show fluorescence. Such property is lost during some anti-acne treatments. Background: T-LAK cell-originated protein kinase (TOPK), a serine/threonine kinase, is aberrantly overexpressed in human tumors and promotes malignant proliferation. Melanoma is a highly immunogenic tumor in which CD8+ T cell-mediated cytotoxicity is usually less effective in tumor control and responsive to immune checkpoint blockade. It is unclear whether the expression and functional characterization of TOPK within the immune cells affect the tumor microenvironment (TME) in patients with melanoma. This study aims to elucidate the expression pattern and immunoregulatory function of TOPK in CD

Intertrigo is a common inflammatory disorder of various origins. It can represent a single skin manifestation or be part of a disorder possibly exhibiting specific manifestations on other parts of the body. Hence, intertrigo may represent a sign of a peculiar disease. It may also result from physicochemical aggressions of the skin following occlusion of the large skinfolds particularly in case of stoutness. In this intance, a treatment similar to that of diaper dermatitis can be offered. A paste enriched or not with miconazole nitrate is indicated to prevent or treat most presentations of inte

Corynebacterium minutissimum, the causative agent of erythrasma, is a gram-positive, non-spore forming, aerobic or facultative anaerobic bacillus. It has rarely been associated with extracutaneous disease, since its description in 1961. A computerized medline search for review of literature was performed. To our knowledge, there have been 18 cases of C. minutissimum infections that caused conditions other than erythrasma. These include reports of cases of abscess formation, intravascular catheter-related bacteremias, ophthalmologic involvement, endocarditis, peritonitis, cutaneous granulomas,

Dermatologic problems are common in diabetes, with approximately 30% of patients experiencing some cutaneous involvement during the course of their illness. Skin manifestations generally appear during the course of the disease in patients known to have diabetes, but they may also be the first presenting sign of diabetes or even precede the diagnosis by many years. The skin involvement can be autoimmune in nature, such as acanthosis nigricans, necrobiosis lipoidica, diabetic dermopathy, scleredema, and granuloma annulare, or infectious in the form of erythrasma, necrotizing fasciitis, and mucor

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: The fluorescence findings of several dermatological diseases, such as erythrasma, tinea versicolor, and acne are helpful for diagnosis and follow-up. However, many experience difficulty taking photographic images of fluorescence. The aim of this study was to develop a 405 nm light-emitting diode (LED) system for fluorescence digital photography of acne and to determine whether such a diode can be used to evaluate acne.
METHODS: Eight healthy acne patients were compared with controls by fluorescence digital photography using a digital camera equipped with a 405 nm LED illum

BACKGROUND: Erythrasma is a superficial cutaneous infection caused by Corynebacterium minutissimum and is characterized by fluorescence under Wood's light (UV) because of the presence of porphyrins. These molecules are photosensitizing and we propose to assess efficacy of red light that activates porphyrins (photodynamic reaction) in treatment of this pathology.
OBJECTIVES: Assessment of effects of photodynamic action of red light for treatment of erythrasma without exogenous photosensitizing molecules.
METHODS: Thirteen patients with erythrasma were treated by one illumination (80 J/cm2) by
