Pityriasis versicolor on the groin mimicking erythrasma.

Pityriasis versicolor (PV) is a widespread dermatomycosis caused by yeasts. Erythrasma is a superficial bacterial skin disease affecting the major folds of the body, particularly the groin. We report the case of a 45-year-old man, affected by PV, exclusively localized in the inguinal folds and in the inner surface of the thighs, characterized by lesions clinically reproducing erythrasma. The authors underline the possibility that PV mimics erythrasma and vice versa, especially in those countries in which both diseases are quite common, and stress the importance of performing a simple mycologic

Coexistence of pityriasis versicolor and erythrasma.

We describe a 53-year-old woman with pityriasis versicolor together with erythrasma that was localized in the axillary and genitocrural region. The coexistence of these infections is rare and we propose the use of methylene blue stain for the diagnosis of both diseases.

Obesity and dermatology.

Obesity is associated with a number of dermatoses. It affects cutaneous sensation, temperature regulation, foot shape, and vasculature. Acanthosis nigricans is the most common dermatological manifestation of obesity. Skin tags are more commonly associated with diabetes than with obesity. Obesity increases the incidence of cutaneous infections that include: candidiasis, intertigo, candida folliculitis, furunculosis, erythrasma, tinea cruris, and folliculitis. Less common infections include cellulitis, necrotizing fasciitis, and gas gangrene. Leg ulcerations, lymphedema, plantar hyperkeratosis,

Skin infections and ageing.

Elderly individuals have an increased susceptibility to skin infections due to age-related anatomical, physiological and environmental factors. The types of organisms that cause primary skin and soft tissue infections are diverse, and include bacterial, viral and fungal pathogens as well as parasites. In the elderly, these infections and infestations may present with atypical signs and symptoms or may complicate underlying chronic skin disorders. Clinical features, investigations and management of the following important and common skin infections are described in more detail: cellulitis, erys

Severe erythema nodosum due to Behçet's disease responsive to erythromycin.

A patient with severe erythema nodosum due to Behçet's disease is reported on here. Erythema nodosum lesions did not respond to classical treatments; however, they cleared after erythromycin treatment, which was prescribed for the treatment of coincidental erythrasma. Erythromycin treatment appears to be an effective treatment option in erythema nodosum. The hypothetical anti-inflammatory effects of erythromycin, besides its antibiotic properties, are reviewed and discussed to explain such a clinical improvement.

Cutaneous manifestation of diabetes mellitus.

One hundred consecutive diabetes mellitus patients attending the diabetic clinic of the hospital constituted the study group. One hundred age and sex matched non-diabetics were taken as controls. The majority, 63%, belonged to the 41-60 years age group and 98% had non-insulin dependent diabetes. Among the study group, 64% had one or more cutaneous manifestations as compared to 22% in the controls. This was statistically highly significant (p < 0.001). Infections comprised the largest group affecting 35 of the 64 cases. Among the bacterial infections, pyodermas were observed in 11 and erythrasm

Management of cutaneous erythrasma.

Corynebacterium minutissimum is the bacteria that leads to cutaneous eruptions of erythrasma and is the most common cause of interdigital foot infections. It is found mostly in occluded intertriginous areas such as the axillae, inframammary areas, interspaces of the toes, intergluteal and crural folds, and is more common in individuals with diabetes mellitus than other clinical patients. This organism can be isolated from a cutaneous site along with a concurrent dermatophyte or Candida albicans infection. The differential diagnosis of erythrasma includes psoriasis, dermatophytosis, candidiasis

Corynebacterium minutissimum bacteremia in an immunocompetent host with cellulitis.

Since its original description in 1961, Corynebacterium minutissimum, the causative agent of erythrasma, has rarely been associated with extracutaneous disease. We report a case of cellulitis and bacteremia due to C. minutissimum. We discuss the treatment of C. minutissimum infection and describe the clinical settings in which isolation of Corynebacterium species from blood cultures should be considered significant.

Pedal interdigital condylomata lata: a rare sign of secondary syphilis.

BACKGROUND: Condylomata lata of the toe webs are uncommon manifestations of secondary syphilis. Considering the recent decline in the incidence of syphilis in the United States, such lesions are likely to present infrequently. In some cases, this phenomenon may be the only physical sign of syphilis; therefore, it is important that a high index of suspicion is maintained when evaluating toe web lesions in patients at epidemiologic risk for syphilis. GOALS: A case of secondary syphilis presenting solely with interdigital condyloma lata in the toe web spaces is reported, and similar cases report

Case report. Erythrasmoid pityriasis versicolor.

A 50-year-old Caucasian man with pityriasis versicolor that was localized almost exclusively in the inguinal folds and was characterized by lesions clinically superimposable on those of erythrasma is described. Due to these clinical characteristics, it is proposed that this variety of pityriasis versicolor is defined as 'erythrasmoid'.

Pityriasis rotunda mimicking tinea cruris/corporis and erythrasma in an Indian patient.

Pityriasis rotunda is a rare disease characterized by perfectly round to oval, sharply defined, scaly, hypo/hyperpigmented patches of variable number and size located mainly over the trunk and proximal extremities. More than 95% of the reported cases in medical literature are from three countries/ethnic populations, namely Japan, South Africa (Bantu), and Italy (Sardinian islanders). To the best of my knowledge, no patient with the characteristic clinico-pathologic features has been reported from the Indian subcontinent. I report a 44-year-old man with eighteen pityriasis rotunda patches, pers

Seeing through the stratum corneum.

The stratum corneum (SC) provides a vital barrier membrane between the external environment and the vulnerable internal tissues of the skin. It impedes the flow of water, the penetration of xenobiotics, and invasion of pathogenic micro-organisms. It also has protective capacity against ultraviolet radiation and thermal injury. As routine histopathology provides a misleading picture of a disorganized and shadowy SC, we would recommend the skin surface biopsy technique. This painless technique is easy and reliable in obtaining information from the SC. It demonstrates the geometric patterns of th

A case of costochondral abscess due to Corynebacterium minutissimum in an HIV-infected patient.

Corynebacterium minutissimum, known as the causative agent of erythrasma, has recently been reported as a clinically significant pathogen in the immunocompromised host. We report for the first time the possible involvement of a multidrug-resistant C. minutissimum strain in a costochondral abscess occurring in an HIV-infected patient.

Fusidic acid in skin and soft tissue infections.

Skin and soft skin tissue infections are usually caused by Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes. In vitro data show good activity of fusidic acid against staphylococci but the minimal inhibitory concentrations for streptococci are relatively high indicating marginal activity. A limited number of clinical trials have been performed using oral fusidic acid and although all have methodological problems the difference in susceptibility of these two organisms is apparent. The end of study cure rates for these studies were 91-99% for S. aureus and 75-85% for S. pyogenes. Topical therapy
