BACKGROUND: Blastocystis sp. is a highly prevalent anaerobic intestinal protozoan increasingly associated with gastrointestinal disorders. Its survival within the gut microenvironment depends on metabolic pathways such as glycolysis, where glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) plays a central role, alongside interactions with nitric oxide (NO) derived from host defenses and surrounding microbiota. The emergence of metronidazole resistance necessitates exploration of alternative therapeutic strategies.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the in vitro effects of metronidazole, metformin, and Alli

Blastocystis is an anaerobic stramenopile that colonizes the large intestine of humans and many animals worldwide. Small-subunit rRNA-based typing reveals deep genetic diversity: at least 44 genetic variants, namely, subtypes (STs), are recognized, with ST1-ST4 accounting for most human carriage. Its medical relevance remains contested. Blastocystis carriage is frequently asymptomatic, and while associations with non-specific gastrointestinal symptoms (e.g. diarrhoea, abdominal pain and bloating), irritable bowel syndrome and extraintestinal manifestations such as urticaria have been proposed.

Intestinal parasitic infections (IPIs) remain a critical global public health concern, particularly for epidemiological surveillance in resource-limited tropical regions. Standard laboratory diagnostics heavily rely on the manual microscopic examination of stool samples, a process that is notoriously time-consuming, labor-intensive, and highly dependent on the scarce availability of experienced parasitologists. To alleviate medical workloads and enhance community-wide screening efficiency, reliable, automated diagnostic tools are urgently needed. From an epidemiological control perspective, su

BACKGROUND: Blastocystis is a common parasite found in the human intestine, causing symptoms such as abdominal pain, bloating, and diarrhoea. Bats are potential hosts for this parasite, but little is known about their infection with Blastocystis.
OBJECTIVE: Given the diversity of bat species in Iran, this study aimed to investigate Blastocystis infection in bats caught in the southwestern and western regions of the country.
METHODS: Faecal samples were collected from 115 bats from five caves located in Fars, Kurdistan, and Kermanshah provinces. DNA was extracted, using the phenol-chloroform

External auditory canal atresia (EACA) is a common otologic condition. Etiology can vary from congenital to acquired causes. It causes considerable difficulty to the patient. Bilateral ear canal atresia in children can lead to speech delays due to hearing impairment caused by this condition. Though easily diagnosed it is one of the most difficult conditions to treat. Acquired conditions can affect any age group. Restenosis following treatment is very common. This article focuses on the treatment of EACA due to different etiologies and emphasizes on special points of surgical treatment and foll

Liposomal amphotericin B (AmBisome) is a lipid-associated formulation of the broad-spectrum polyene antifungal agent amphotericin B. It is active against clinically relevant yeasts and moulds, including Candida spp., Aspergillus spp. and filamentous moulds such as Zygomycetes, and is approved for the treatment of invasive fungal infections in many countries worldwide. It was developed to improve the tolerability profile of amphotericin B deoxycholate, which was for many decades considered the gold standard of antifungal treatment, despite being associated with infusion-related events and nephr

INTRODUCTION: There is no consistent definition of burnout. It is neither a defined diagnosis in ICD-10 nor in DSM-IV. Yet it is diagnosed by office-based doctors and clinicians. Mainly due to reimbursement reasons, diagnoses like depression are used instead of burnout diagnoses. Therefore burnout has a very high individual, social and economic impact.
OBJECTIVES: How is burnout diagnosed? Which criteria are relevant? How valid and reliable are the used tools? What kind of disorders in case of burnout are relevant for a differential diagnosis? What is the economic effect of a differential diagn

BACKGROUND: Enterocolitis and gastroenteritis remain major health problems, particularly in children living in developing countries. Intestinal protozoa, such as Entamoeba histolytica, Blastocystis, and Cyclospora, are frequently associated with these conditions. Amebic colitis can cause serious complications, including fulminant necrotizing colitis, toxic megacolon, extraintestinal amebiasis, and stunting in children. The diagnosis of amoebiasis is challenging, relying on microscopic examination, which cannot distinguish E. histolytica from the nonpathogenic E. dispar and E. moshkovskii. Ther

BACKGROUND: Gastrointestinal parasitic infections remain a major health burden in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs).
METHODS: Overall, 1238 faecal samples (548 from healthcare-seeking children [Cohort 1] and 690 from children from the community [Cohort 2]) were examined by microscopy for Giardia duodenalis and Entamoeba species, and by PCR for G. duodenalis, Entamoeba histolytica, Entamoeba dispar and Cryptosporidium spp. Associations between symptoms, microscopy intensity and PCR cycle threshold (Ct) values were analysed. Children were matched by age, gender and residence.

Intestinal tuberculosis is a very rare manifestation of bacterial tuberculosis. Affected patients often present with nonspecific symptoms which could mimic Crohn's disease, intestinal cancer, or amebiasis. Consequently, the presentation of intestinal tuberculosis remains a diagnostic challenge. Here, we report the case of a 27-year-old female with a past medical history of external hemorrhoids who presents to the hospital with complaints of generalized weakness, dizziness, watery diarrhea, significant weight loss, and near syncope. CT abdomen and pelvis with oral contrast revealed colonic wall

BACKGROUND: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is associated with impaired quality of life (QoL), anxiety and depression. Intestinal parasitic infections may exacerbate this burden, but their impact on psychological and functional outcomes remains underexplored.
METHODS: In this Phase II case-control study, 100 IBS patients and 100 age- and sex-matched healthy controls were assessed using a 36-item disease-specific QoL questionnaire and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). IBS patients were categorised as parasite-negative or parasite-positive (Giardia lamblia or Entamoeba histolytic

Amebic liver abscess with bronchopleural fistula caused by Entamoeba histolytica can mimic severe bacterial sepsis in a returning traveller. Rapid diagnosis via multiplex Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) on abscess fluid enabled targeted therapy within 24 h, avoiding unnecessary broad-spectrum antibiotics. Intestinal amebiasis should be considered in patients with compatible symptoms and relevant exposure.

Blastocystis is a genetically diverse unicellular eukaryotic intestinal parasite with no gold-standard diagnostic method. This study, conducted in Iran, is the first to directly compare Sequence-Tagged Site (STS) PCR and restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) for its diagnosis of human. It builds on our previous work with the same cohort. We aimed to evaluate the diagnostic sensitivity and specificity of these methods using nested PCR as the internal reference. In addition, we assessed subtypes and genetic diversity using STS-PCR. A total of 124 fecal samples were included: 64 previou
