Blastocystis is the most commonly found intestinal protist in the world. Accurate detection and differentiation of Blastocystis including its subtypes (arguably species) are essential to understand its epidemiology and role in human health. We compared (i) the sensitivity of conventional PCR (cPCR) and qPCR in a set of 288 DNA samples obtained from stool samples of gut-healthy individuals, and (ii) subtype diversity as detected by next-generation sequencing (NGS) versus Sanger sequencing. Real-time PCR resulted in more positive samples than cPCR, revealing high fecal load of Blastocystis based

A man in his 50s was referred to the hospital with fever, right lower abdominal pain, and bloody diarrhea. Based on computed tomography images and characteristic varioliform erosions observed during the colonoscopic examination, the patient was diagnosed with fulminant amebic colitis. Intravenous metronidazole was administered immediately. After symptom improvement, a second colonoscopic examination revealed inflammation localized to the right hemicolon. A right colectomy was performed on the 75th hospital day, and the patient was discharged without further problems. Prompt antiamebic therapy

Blastocystis sp. is a common intestinal microorganism. The α-L-fucosidase (ALFuc) is an enzyme long associated with the colonization of the gut microbiota. However, this enzyme has not been experimentally identified in Blastocystis cultures. The objective of the present study was to identify ALFuc in supernatants of axenic cultures of Blastocystis subtype (ST)1 ATCC-50177 and ATCC-50610 and to compare predicted ALFuc proteins of alfuc genes in sequenced STs1-3 isolates in human Blastocystis carriers. Excretion/secretion (Es/p) and cell lysate proteins were obtained by processing Blastocystis A

BACKGROUND: Blastocystis is a common intestinal protozoa found in animal and human fecal samples, with over 1 billion individuals infected worldwide. Since domestication, dogs and cats have had a close bond with humans. However, their close proximity poses a potential health risk since they may harbor several zoonotic agents. A global estimate of Blastocystis infection and subtype (ST) distribution in dogs and cats would therefore be of great health importance to humans.
METHODS: We performed a comprehensive systematic search of four English-language databases (PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar,

E. histolytica is the etiological agent of intestinal amebiasis and liver abscesses, which still poses public health threat globally. Metronidazole is the drug of choice against amebiasis. However, metronidazole-resistant amoebic clinical isolates and strains have been reported recently, challenging the efforts for amebiasis eradication. In search of alternative treatments, E. histolytica transcriptomes have shown the association of genes involved in RNA metabolism with the virulence of the parasite. Among the upregulated genes in amoebic liver abscesses are the splicing factors EhU2AF2 and a

The parasites that belong to the genus Blastocystis are the most common intestinal parasite detected in a wide range of hosts including humans. Although the pathogenicity of these parasites remains controversial, many studies confirmed their pathogenicity and some researchers strongly believe that the pathogenicity may be linked with specific subtypes of these parasites. The current study investigated the Blastocystis sp. subtypes recovered from individuals suffering from the irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) in comparison with those recovered from non-IBS subjects. Fresh stool samples were colle

Blastocystis is an enigmatic intestinal protist of humans and many animals. There is growing interest in its potential as an enteric pathogen, and the possible role of domestic and in-contact animals as reservoirs for human infection. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of Blastocystis infection in fishes, poultry, and caprine in Penang, Malaysia. A total of 353 faecal samples/intestinal contents, consisting of 123 intestinal contents from freshwater fishes, 96 intestinal contents of commercially barn-reared chickens, 84 intestinal contents of barn-reared quails, and 50 f

Blastocystis spp. are common intestinal parasites found in humans and many kinds of animals. Blastocystis spp. infection is associated with a variety of symptoms, including diarrhea, abdominal pain, and chronic urticaria, among which asymptomatic infection is the most common. Among the 11 potentially zoonotic subtypes of Blastocystis spp., 9 subtypes have been reported in bird species. The purpose of this study was to detect the infection rate and gene subtype distribution of Blastocystis spp. in pet birds in Henan Province, Central China, to provide a foundation for preventing and controlling

Entamoeba histolytica (E. histolytica) is an anaerobic parasite that causes Amoebiasis in the intestine or extraintestinal, with immunology, genetics, and environmental variables all playing a part in the disease's development, but its molecular mechanism is unknown. One of the primary obstacles in understanding the etiology of Amoebiasis will be identifying the genetics profiling that controls the Amoebiasis network. By examining the gene expression profile of Amoebiasis and comparing it with healthy controls, we could identify differentially expressed genes (DEGs). DEGs were used to build th

BACKGROUND: Blastocystis sp. is one of the most common colonisers of the intestinal tract that demonstrate strong interaction with accompanying gut bacteria. Previously, the protozoan isolated from individuals with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) showed altered phenotypic features suggesting that it can be triggered to become pathogenic. Previous studies reported altered gut microbiota and high prevalence of Blastocystis sp. in schizophrenia patients. However, the phenotypic characteristics of Blastocystis sp. isolated from individuals with SZ have yet to be described.
METHODS: In this study,

Blastocystis spp. is a unicellular organism that resides in digestive tract of various vertebrates, with a worldwide distribution and a variable prevalence. For many years, Blastocystis spp. was considered a cyst of a flagellate, a fungus, or a saprophyte yeast of the digestive tract; in 1996, it is placed in the group of stramenopiles (heterokonts). Since its new classification, many questions have arisen around this protist about its role as a pathogen or non-pathogen organism. Recent evidence indicates that Blastocystis spp. participates in the immune inflammatory response in the intestinal

BACKGROUND: Amoebiasis is an intestinal and tissue parasitic infection caused by the protozoan Entamoeba histolytica. Despite significant medical importance and worldwide dispersion, little is known about the epidemiology and distinct geographical distribution of various clinical forms of amoebiasis in the world. In this study, we present an amoebiasis case series referred to Avicenne Hospital (Bobigny, France) from 2010 to 2022 followed by an overview of the released literature to explore diverse clinico-pathology of amoebiasis and to update the actual epidemiological situation of this parasi

The severity of Entamoeba histolytica infection is determined by host immunology, pathogen virulence, and the intestinal environment. Conventional research for assessing pathogen virulence has been mainly performed using laboratory strains, such as a virulent HM-1: IMSS (HM-1) and an avirulent Rahman, under various artificial environmental conditions because of the difficulties of axenic isolation of the clinical strains. However, it is still unclear whether scientific knowledge based on laboratory strains are universally applicable to the true pathogenesis. Hereby, we performed transcriptomic

Blastocystis sp. - is the most prevalent anaerobic intestinal protozoan parasite in humans and many animals; from 1 to 2 billion people in the world are colonized by this pathogen. Blastocystis sp. is found both in faecal samples (FS) of healthy people (asymptomatic persons) and - patients (symptomatic persons) with nonspecific symptoms of gastrointestinal tract, skin, joints and other organs lesions. The prevalence of people affected by Blastocystis sp. of both cohorts in the world vary widely (from 0.08% to about 90%) depending on the degree of the country's economic development, sanitary an

Entamoeba histolytica infections, which can be asymptomatic, are endemic to developing countries; traveling to such countries is a risk factor for contracting these infections. A 65-year-old Japanese man was hospitalized for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)-associated respiratory distress, and was treated with remdesivir, dexamethasone, and oxygen supplementation. Although his respiratory condition improved and the oxygen support was discontinued, he developed a fever, severe abdominal pain, and diarrhea on day 13 of hospitalization. Fifteen years ago, he was hospitalized for diarrhea of an
