A case of pemphigus foliaceus which initially developed at sites of preexisting psoriasis and a case of pemphigus erythematosus that developed on the lesions of photosensitive erythemas are described. Immunopathologic aspects of bullous skin diseases were studied in paraffin sections of thirty-three skin biopsy specimens utilizing monoclonal antibodies directed against histiocytes, helper/inducer T lymphocytes, and Langerhans cells in skin lesions. Laboratory examinations revealed that either more or fewer of the standard number of helper/inducer T lymphocytes (UCHL1+) were observed in the upper dermis in 84.8% of the cases examined, particularly in the various forms of pemphigus; histiocytes (MAC387+) were also found to occur in the upper dermis in 45.5% of the cases and blisters in 27.3%

BACKGROUND: There are still unanswered questions about optimal treatment strategies and long-term prognosis of pemphigus. The Italian Group for Epidemiologic Research in Dermatology (GISED) started to register pemphigus in March 1990.
METHODS: The registry is hospital-based, covering newly diagnosed cases referred to 33 dermatologic centers in the north and the middle-south of Italy. Serum samples were collected at the time of diagnosis, for centralized storage.

A combination of niacinamide and tetracycline was used to treat 31 dogs with various autoimmune skin diseases (discoid lupus erythematosus, pemphigus foliaceus, pemphigus erythematosus, and bullous pemphigoid). Of the 20 dogs with discoid lupus erythematosus, 70% had excellent or good response to treatment. Serious side effects were not noticed in any dog.

Determination of antibodies to specific nuclear antigens, termed extractable nuclear antigen (ENA), was investigated in healthy dogs and in dogs with autoimmune, inflammatory, and neoplastic diseases. Steroids are effective in the autoimmune bullous disease pemphigus; however, treatment may be difficult to sustain because of severe side effects. Cyclosporine A acts mainly on helper/inducer T lymphocytes and has few side effects at low doses. We report three patients with pemphigus erythematosus who had a relapse while receiving the maintenance dose of steroid therapy. All patients who were treated with both cyclosporine A (5 mg/kg/d) and prednisone (1 mg/kg/d) responded remarkably well to combined therapy.
