We report on 2 renal transplant patients in whom acute urinary retention developed after anogenital herpes infections. In 1 case a reversible bladder motor and sensory neuropathy occurred secondary to herpes simplex virus infections. In the other case a motor paralytic bladder developed secondary to an anogenital varicella-zoster infection. Documentation was by carbon dioxide cystometrography and denervation hypersensitivity testing. Both cases were reversible without alteration of the immunosuppressive regimens.

The temporal patterns of varicella-associated thrombocytopenia in five children seen at the Johns Hopkins Hospital suggest the existence of at least two pathogenetic mechanisms: one "infectious," with thrombocytopenia during the period of viremia; the other "post-infectious," with thrombocytopenia continuing for weeks or months afterward. A patient with hemolytic uremic syndrome complicating chicken pox is described. At post mortem, the glomeruli showed diffuse capillary wall thickening and extensive wrinkling of the basement membrane with subendothelial deposition of granular material. Although a number of viruses and other infective agents have been implicated in its etiology, this appears to be the first report of an association between hemolytic uremic syndrome and chicken pox.

An outbreak of varicella-zoster infection occurred among patients of the Medicine Branch, National Cancer Institute, National Institutes of Health. Ten patients with malignant inoperable thymoma were treated January 1972 and December 1978 in the Department of Radiotherapy, University Hospital, Basel. The average age at the time of diagnosis was 36 years. The youngest patient with an ectopic thymoma was 5 1/2 years old and the oldest 66. Accompanying autoimmune diseases were not observed. Histological verification was obtained 9 times by biopsy and once by tumor excision: 3 patients had a fusiform cell thymoma, 3 presented with a mixed-cell thymoma, 2 patients had a granulomatous and 2 mainly an epithelial or unclassified type of thymoma.

Using the Seattle protocol with minor modifications, 23 patients with severe aplastic anaemia received allogeneic bone marrow transplants from HLA/mixed leucocyte culture matched sibs in three London centres between 1973 and 1977. In order to find out whether perinatal cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection causes clinical symptoms or signs or influences the general morbidity of a child, a prospective study was performed on 147 children during their first year of life. 48 infants were infected with CMV perinatally. Hepes simplex usually presents with fairly characteristic skin lesions that are localized to small area. A less well appreciated presentation for herpes simplex is a varicelliform eruption that may be difficult to differentiate from chickenpox. We treated a patient with such an eruption who had systemic lupus erythematosus and was receiving oral prednisone. We also review seven other cases from the literature of varicella-like herpes simplex and discuss the role played by immuno-suppression in herpetic infections.

Disseminated infection caused by Fusarium moniliforme is described in a 32-year-old granulocytopenic man with malignant lymphoma being treated with cytotoxic drugs and corticosteroids.
