Four children with lymphoproliferative malignant disease, two with acute lymphocytic leukemia in remission and two with Hodgkin's disease, were treated with a Thymic Hormone, THF, for disseminated varicella infecition. In 14 of 16 consecutive patients with acute peripheral facial palsy, one or more (up to four) other nerves were involved. A live varicella vaccine was used in 11 susceptible children in remission from acute leukemia, ten of whom had been in remission for six months or less, and in 6 children with neuroblastoma and retinoblastoma. A boy 13 year-old suffered an extremely severe and prolonged attack of hemorrhagic chickenpox with visceral involvement, the diagnosis being confirmed by isolation of varicella-zoster-virus (VZV). There was no other compromising disease. All preceding vaccinations including two against smallpox had been uneventful. Fifty-eight children with Reye's syndrome (RS) confirmed by liver biopsy were treated at the University of Cincinnati between 1963 and 1974.
