Detection of autoantibodies to heat shock protein 70 in the saliva and urine of normal individuals.

Cells exposed to stressors of various origin activate protective mechanisms that include the expression of heat shock proteins (Hsps)/molecular chaperones belonging to several families. Well-characterized inducible Hsp70 is present in all human cell-types and biological fluids, including blood, urine, and saliva. The presence of anti-Hsp70 autoantibodies in the serum of healthy individuals has already been confirmed, and their elevated titers positively correlated with the severity of several pathological conditions, including coeliac disease and dermatitis herpetiformis - a cutaneous manifest

Beyond the Gut: Exploring Cardiovascular Implications of Celiac Disease.

Celiac disease (CD) is an autoimmune disorder that presents with gastrointestinal symptoms including diarrhea, weight loss, and abdominal bloating due to the inflammation in the small intestine. It has been associated with various extraintestinal manifestations, including mucocutaneous findings such as dermatitis herpetiformis, anemia, dental enamel defects, osteoporosis, and arthritis. Studies have revealed an increasing association between CD and cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), including atherosclerosis, cardiomyopathy, and arrhythmia. Chronic inflammation, nutritional deficiencies from mala

Uncommon and Unusual Variants of Autoimmune Bullous Diseases.

BACKGROUND: Autoimmune blistering diseases (AIBDs) are a type of dermatosis with antibodies produced against various structural proteins of the epidermis or dermoepidermal junction. AIBDs are broadly divided into intraepidermal and subepidermal types. Apart from the common AIBDs, there is an array of uncommon AIBDs. OBJECTIVE: To discuss uncommon variants of AIBDs so that the readers are updated about them. METHODS: In this review, we have discussed uncommon and unusual variants like pemphigus herpetiformis, IgA pemphigus, paraneoplastic pemphigus, induced pemphigus, IgG/IgA pemphigus, oral

Autoimmune Diseases and Risk of Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma: A Mendelian Randomisation Study.

BACKGROUND: Non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) is one of the most common haematologic malignancies in the world. Despite substantial efforts to identify causes and risk factors for NHL, its aetiology is largely unclear. Autoimmune diseases have long been considered potential risk factors for NHL. We carried out Mendelian randomisation (MR) analyses to examine whether genetically predicted susceptibility to ten autoimmune diseases (Behçet's disease, coeliac disease, dermatitis herpetiformis, lupus, psoriasis, rheumatoid arthritis, sarcoidosis, Sjögren's syndrome, systemic sclerosis, and type 1 diabetes

Laboratory and clinical haemostatic aberrations in primary dermatologic disease: A review.

Inflammatory dermatologic diseases have long been viewed as a "skin limited" disease process. Current literature on inflammatory dermatologic diseases investigates their relationship and influence on thromboembolic states and thromboembolic complications and the understanding of their pathophysiology and molecular mechanisms.Studies specifically discuss known inflammatory skin diseases including alopecia areata, vitiligo, psoriasis, hidradenitis suppurativa, atopic dermatitis, chronic spontaneous urticaria, and autoimmune bullous diseases, and their effects on systemic inflammation, associated

A Comparative Study of Direct Immunofluorescence Patterns in Linear IgA Bullous Dermatosis Versus Dermatitis Herpetiformis.

BACKGROUND: Dermatitis herpetiformis (DH) is typically characterized by granular IgA deposition in the papillary dermis on direct immunofluorescence (DIF), and linear IgA bullous dermatosis (LABD) is characterized by linear deposition of IgA along the basement membrane. Other DIF findings in both conditions may include IgG, IgM, and C3 deposition in various patterns. In cases where immunofluorescence findings are unclear, such as continuous but somewhat granular IgA deposition along the dermal-epidermal junction, additional DIF patterns may be helpful in the diagnostic process. METHODS: Forty

The Role of Nutrition in the Pathogenesis and Treatment of Autoimmune Bullous Diseases-A Narrative Review.

Autoimmune bullous diseases (AIBDs) are a group of conditions marked by the formation of blisters and erosions on the skin and mucous membranes. It occurs in all age groups, slightly more often affecting women. Several factors may be linked to the development of AIBDs, with nutrition being one of them. The literature mentions various food products and food ingredients acting as disease modifiers. Given the complex relationship between bullous diseases and nutrition, the current literature on AIBDs has been reviewed, with an emphasis on the influence of dietary modifications, various diets, and

Evidence of a Causal Relationship Between Body Mass Index and Immune-Mediated and Inflammatory Skin Diseases and Biomarkers: A Mendelian Randomization Study.

AIM: Increasing observational studies are revealing a positive correlation between body mass index (BMI) and the risk of Immune-mediated and Inflammatory Skin Diseases (IMID), however the causal relationship is not yet definite. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to conduct a two-sample Mendelian randomization (TSMR) to explore the potential causality between BMI, and IMID and biomarkers. METHODS: The summary statistics for BMI (n = 322,154), at genome-wide significant level, were derived from the Genetic Investigation of Anthropometric Traits consortium (GIANT). The outcome data for IMID (

Iodoform in Surgical Practice: A Comprehensive Review of Its Historical Evolution, Clinical Applications, and Safety Profiles.

Iodoform, a halogenated organic compound, has been a cornerstone in surgical practice due to its potent antiseptic and antimicrobial properties. This comprehensive review examines the historical evolution, mechanism of action, clinical applications, and safety profile of iodoform across various surgical disciplines. Historically significant formulations like Whitehead's varnish and bismuth iodoform paraffin paste (BIPP) demonstrated remarkable efficacy in wound healing during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. BIPP, extensively used for cavity packing, combines bismuth subnitrate for its

State-of-the-art diagnosis of autoimmune blistering diseases.

Autoimmune blistering disorders (AIBDs) are a heterogeneous group of approximately a dozen entities comprising pemphigus and pemphigoid disorders and dermatitis herpetiformis. The exact diagnosis of AIBDs is critical for both prognosis and treatment and is based on the clinical appearance combined with the detection of tissue-bound and circulating autoantibodies. While blisters and erosions on the skin and/or inspectable mucosal surfaces are typical, lesions may be highly variable with erythematous, urticarial, prurigo-like, or eczematous manifestations. While direct immunofluorescence microsc

Pemphigus herpetiformis: a single-center tertiary care experience.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Pemphigus herpetiformis (PH) is a rare variant of pemphigus with a complex pathogenesis that is often difficult to diagnose. The literature generally presents data based on small case series. This study aims to broaden the understanding of PH by presenting our cases' clinical, histopathological, and immunological characteristics. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis of the medical charts of patients diagnosed with PH between 2008 and 2023 from the Dermatology Clinic at Atatürk University's Faculty of Medicine was performed. The diagnostic criteria proposed by Kasper

Price, quality, and availability of gluten-free products in Australia and New Zealand - a cross-sectional study.

Adhering to a gluten-free diet (GFD) is essential for individuals with gluten-related disorders such as coeliac disease, dermatitis herpetiformis, gluten ataxia, and wheat allergy. Approximately 1%-2% of the population is affected by these conditions. Access to affordable, high-quality gluten-free products (GFPs) is crucial for maintaining dietary compliance and well-being. This study explores the experiences of those on a GFD, focusing on the availability, quality, and cost of GFPs compared to non-GFPs. The study was conducted in two stages: (1) An online survey was distributed to Australian

Skin as a Reflection of Gut Health: An Overview of Dermatological Manifestations in Primary Neoplastic and Autoimmune Gastrointestinal Disorders.

Gastrointestinal (GI) diseases can present with several extraintestinal manifestations, and cutaneous signs and symptoms are most frequent. Although conventionally GI and skin are considered two entirely separate organ systems, they are closely correlated in origin. An increasing amount of data highlights the complex relationship between GI and dermatological conditions. This review article aims to particularly explore the clinical correlation between neoplastic and autoimmune GI disorders and skin manifestations, which serve as clinical indicators of these diseases. Neoplastic diseases includ

Celiac Disease-Related Conditions: Who to Test?

Celiac disease (CeD) is a chronic immune-mediated condition triggered by gluten consumption in genetically predisposed individuals. Approximately 1% of the general population is affected by the disorder. Disease presentation is heterogeneous and, despite growing awareness among physicians and the public, it continues to be underestimated. The most effective strategy for identifying undiagnosed CeD is proactive case finding through serologic testing in high-risk groups. We reviewed the most recent evidence on the association between CeD and more than 20 conditions. In light of this review, CeD
