he Influence of Academician Franjo Kogoj on Global Dermatology.

Academician Franjo Kogoj graduated medicine in 1920 in Prague, where he then pursued training in dermatovenerology. During later years, he also visited other dermatology clinics in Europe, where he collaborated with renowned dermatologists of the time, such as in Breslau (present day Wroclaw in Poland) with Josef Jadassohn and in Strasbourg with Lucien-Marie Pautrier. He was also active in the famous Saint-Louis hospital in Paris. Academician Kogoj's scientific interests were especially focused on allergies, exanthemas, skin tuberculosis, and keratodermas. Kogoj was very active in defining a p

The impact of prurigo nodularis on quality of life: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Prurigo nodularis (PN) is a chronic, pruritic, debilitating disease. Previous studies found that chronic pruritus in general negatively affects patients' quality of life (QoL). However, results about the impact of PN on QoL are conflicting. Our objective was to assess the QoL burden of PN. A systematic review was conducted of all published studies that assessed QoL measures in PN. OVID MEDLINE, EMBASE, SCOPUS, and Web of Science were searched. Pooled meta-analysis (means) was performed using random-effects weighting. Overall, 13 studies met inclusion criteria. All studies identified QoL reduct

Monitoring trough levels in cyclosporine for atopic dermatitis: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Cyclosporine is a useful immunosuppressive agent for achieving disease control in moderate to severe atopic dermatitis in children and adults. However, it carries the potential for nephrotoxicity. Monitoring of drug levels is performed in other patient groups, such as transplant recipients, but is not commonplace in the management of atopic dermatitis. OBJECTIVES: To investigate levels of nephrotoxicity associated with cyclosporine use in atopic dermatitis and assess potential correlation with trough levels of cyclosporine. METHODS: An electronic search was conducted on MEDLINE,

Introduction.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic relapsing condition that is characterized by itching and redness of the skin. Our modern usage of atopic dermatitis dates back to 1933, when Wise and Sulzberger first coined the term to signify the disease's close association with other respiratory atopy, such as bronchial asthma and allergic rhinitis. A recent systematic review of 69 cross-sectional and cohort studies has confirmed that AD is now a worldwide phenomenon with lifetime AD prevalences of well over 20% in many affluent country settings. Although there is no obvious consistent overall global tren

Atopic dermatitis, atopic eczema, or eczema? A systematic review, meta-analysis, and recommendation for uniform use of 'atopic dermatitis'.

BACKGROUND: The lack of standardized nomenclature for atopic dermatitis (AD) creates unnecessary confusion for patients, healthcare providers, and researchers. It also negatively impacts accurate communication of research in the scientific literature. We sought to determine the most commonly used terms for AD. METHODS: A systematic review of the MEDLINE, EMBASE, and LILACS (1945-2016) for the terms AD, atopic eczema (AE), and multiple other eczematous disorders. RESULTS: In MEDLINE, 33 060 were identified, of which 21 299 (64.4%) publications used the term 'AD', 15 510 (46.9%) 'eczema', and

Economic Impact of Atopic Dermatitis in Korean Patients.

BACKGROUND: Atopic dermatitis is a global public health concern owing to its increasing prevalence and socioeconomic burden. However, few studies have assessed the economic impact of atopic dermatitis in Korea. OBJECTIVE: We conducted a cost analysis of atopic dermatitis and evaluated its economic impacts on individual annual disease burden, quality of life, and changes in medical expenses with respect to changes in health related-quality of life. METHODS: The cost analysis of atopic dermatitis was performed by reviewing the home accounting records of 32 patients. The economic impact of the

Is the duration of skin disease visits decreasing in the United States?

BACKGROUND: Changes in the practice of medicine may be affecting how much time physicians spend with their patients. Economic pressures in some health systems may limit how much time patients spend with doctors. Inefficiencies associated with the use of EMR potentially could lengthen the duration of office visits. OBJECTIVE: To assess trends in the duration of skin disease visits over the last two decades. METHODS: Skin disease visits were selected from the 1993-2010 National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey. Changes in overall number of visits per dermatologist, variation in visit duration, a

Atopic dermatitis/atopic eczema.

Atopic dermatitis was described in 1933 but exists since antiquity. We review descriptions of a childhood skin disease compatible with our modern diagnosis of atopic dermatitis, in ancient medicine and in nineteenth century dermatology texts. We identify Hebra's prurigo and Besnier's diathetic prurigo as forerunners of atopic dermatitis, the latter being a synthesis of infantile eczema and prurigo. The pathogenic theories which link atopic dermatitis to humoralistic medicine, to digestive diseases, to allergy may have had consequences on today's reluctance to consider atopic dermatitis as a sk

Polypodium leucotomos extract in atopic dermatitis: a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, multicenter trial.

INTRODUCTION: Topical corticosteroids are used to treat inflammation and relieve itching in atopic dermatitis, but their use is limited by adverse reactions. OBJECTIVES: The main aim of this study was to investigate whether daily treatment with Polypodium leucotomos extract would reduce the use of topical corticosteroids in children and adolescents with atopic dermatitis. We also analyzed oral antihistamine use and changes in disease severity. Shh signaling and pancreatic cancer: implications for therapy?

UNLABELLED: Histoplasmosis is a soil-based dimorphic fungus endemic to the Midwest and Southeastern United States and is responsible for infection through inhalation of conidia. Infection is usually asymptomatic, as the fungal growth is contained by formation of granulomas. However, dissemination can occur in immunocompromised hosts due to the lack of optimal activity of interferon gamma, tumour necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha) and interleukin-17. There is a significant overlap between the symptomatology of histoplasmosis and granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA). We report a case of a 48-ye

Quality of life in Swedish children with eczema.

The burdens of childhood eczema are many and some can be assessed with quality of life (QoL) questionnaires. Seventy-eight Swedish children with mild-to-severe eczema ("atopic dermatitis", prurigo Besnier), fulfilling established diagnostic criteria, were investigated for the effect of eczema on QoL. This was measured with validated questionnaires: the Infants' Dermatitis Quality of Life Index (IDQOL), the Children's Dermatology Life Quality Index (CDLQI), and the Dermatitis Family Impact Questionnaire (DFI). The study also included scoring of eczema severity. The median score was 7.0 (range 1

Cost of atopic dermatitis and eczema in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Atopic dermatitis/eczema (AD/E) is a common disease. Few studies have attempted to quantify the cost to third-party payers. OBJECTIVE: Our purpose was to identify the annual cost of medical services and prescription drugs for the treatment of AD/E to private insurance and Medicaid payers in the United States. METHODS: We used a retrospective study design employing claims data from 1997 and 1998 from a private insurer and a state Medicaid program to analyze costs incurred. Beneficiaries were considered to have AD/E if they had at least one claim in 1997 with a primary or secondary

Successful interferon alpha therapy in atopic dermatitis of Besnier's prurigo pattern with normal serum IgE and blood eosinophil fraction: randomized case-controlled study.

A randomized case-controlled study was carried out to investigate for interferon alpha therapy in atopic dermatitis (AD) of Besnier's prurigo pattern with normal serum IgE and normal blood eosinophil fraction. Interferon alpha therapy was conducted on 14 non-responders to interferon gamma and subsequent thymopentin therapy among 100 atopic dermatitis patients. Eight patients who improved significantly, showed skin lesions of the Besnier's prurigo pattern with normal serum IgE and normal blood eosinophil fraction. For the randomized prospective case-controlled study, 44 patients with the above

Dermatological problems in the work environment following childhood skin diseases.

Dermatoses belong to the most frequent occupational diseases. Many of them have an early onset. The dermatoses which appear in early childhood or in adolescence often heal early. However, there are also many patients who continue to have recurrences and exacerbations of their dermatoses into adult life, which is important to know in connection with choice of occupation and occupational health. Occupational problems in patients with atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, allergic contact dermatitis, polymorphus light eruption and acne vulgaris are discussed. Some of the results from a follow-up of 549 i

[Pruritus and prurigo].

Prurigo occurs in the acute form of the disease (strophulus), in the subacute frorm (prurigo simplex subacuta), and the chronic form (prurigo nodularis Hyde). Transition stages between the subacute and the chronic form of the disease are common. Strophulus is characterized by few papulovesicles, which are disseminated on the trunk. Likewise, the lesions of prurigo simplex subacuta may be disseminated, or they may be acneiform, or are localised on the extremities only. Typically, prurigo nodularis Hyde occurs on the lower extremities. Strophulus is caused by the bites of insects or by gastroint

Immunofluorescent patterns in the skin in Besnier's prurigo. The eczema asthma syndrome.

The immunofluorescent patterns in the skin of eighteen patients with Besnier's prurigo were studied at different stages of eczematous lesions. The presence, distribution pattern, and numbers of immunoglobulin and complement-positive lymphocytes in twenty-nine biopsies are reported. In all cases IgE-positive lymphocytes were present in both clinically uninvolved and involved skin. IgG, IgM and IgE-positive lymphocytes showed a characteristic distribution pattern in the dermis. In the acute stages IgM deposition was prominent in the basement membrane zone and it is suggested that damage to the b
