Effect of Nasal Skin Type on Skin Problems following Rhinoplasty.

Skin problems following rhinoplasty may cause dissatisfaction concerning the esthetic expectations of the patients. This study was conducted to determine whether nasal skin type has an effect on skin problems after rhinoplasty. Thirty-five patients undergoing rhinoplasty in our tertiary referral center between May 2018 and August 2019 were included in the study. The nasal skin sebum level was measured with Sebumeter preoperatively and patients were divided into two groups according to the median sebum level. Among the 35 patients, half of them with higher nasal skin sebum were categorized as o

Parkinson's disease and skin.

Parkinson's disease is associated with a variety of dermatologic disorders and the study of skin may provide insights into pathophysiological mechanisms underlying this common neurodegenerative disorder. Skin disorders in patients with Parkinson's disease can be divided into two major groups: 1) non-iatrogenic disorders, including melanoma, seborrheic dermatitis, sweating disorders, bullous pemphigoid, and rosacea, and 2) iatrogenic disorders related either to systemic side effects of antiparkinsonian medications or to the delivery system of antiparkinsonian therapy, including primarily carbid

Malassezia species may play potential roles in the pathogenesis of meibomian gland dysfunction.

Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) is the most common cause of dry eye disease (DED). Although many factors, such as aging, androgen deficiency, bacterial colonization and drug toxicity have been demonstrated to be associated with MGD, its pathogenesis is not well understood and definite therapies are lacking. Meibomian gland is the largest lipid-secreting gland of human and is the counterpart of sebaceous gland in the eyelid. The lipophilic yeast Malassezia species (spp) habitats in sebaceous gland and is generally considered to play pathogenic roles in seborrheic dermatitis. Several mechanism

Changes in alanine aminotransferase in adults with severe and complicated obesity during a milk-based meal replacement programme.

Nosocomial pneumonia or hospital-acquired pneumonia (HAP) causes considerable morbidity and mortality. It is the second most common nosocomial infection and the leading cause of death from hospital-acquired infections. In 1996 the American Thoracic Society (ATS) published guidelines for empirical therapy of HAP. This review focuses on the literature that has appeared since the ATS statement. Early diagnosis of HAP and its etiology is crucial in guiding empirical therapy. Since 1996, it has become clear that differentiating mere colonization from etiologic pathogens infecting the lower respirat

The prevalence and spectrum of mucocutaneous disease in South African people living with HIV and accessing care at a district-level hospital.

BACKGROUND: Although the association between human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and mucocutaneous diseases has been well studied within South African specialist centres, there is limited data from district-level hospitals. Available data may, therefore, fail to reflect the prevalence and full spectrum of dermatoses seen in people living with HIV (PLWH). OBJECTIVES: To determine the prevalence and spectrum of dermatoses seen in PLWH. METHOD: We conducted a cross-sectional, descriptive study of 970 PLWH (men and women, ≥ 18 years old) accessing care at Karl Bremer Hospital, a district-level ho

Structure-Guided Molecular Engineering of a Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor Antagonist to Treat Retinal Diseases.

BACKGROUND: Dystonia is one of the most common forms of movement disorder, caused by the co-contraction of antagonistic muscles, leading to abnormal postures and considerable disability. Non-motor symptoms, notably psychiatric disorders, are well recognised comorbid features of the disorder. However, there is no standardised model for the management of these symptoms in dystonia, with them frequently going undiagnosed and untreated. An internet-based cognitive behavioural therapy programme may provide a future model of care that also maximises available resources. METHODS: This study represen

INTRODUCTION: The overall prevalence of myasthenic crisis is quite low at 30/1 million inhabitants because myasthenia gravis is a rare disease per se. But it should be noted that 15-20% of patients with myasthenia gravis experience at least one crisis in their lives. Most often, the crisis occurs within the first 2 years of the disease or is even the first manifestation of a yet undiagnosed myasthenia gravis in up to 20%.Median duration of MC is about 2 weeks (median 12-14 days of ventilation) under sufficient treatment, but prolonged courses are not uncommon and often due to comorbidities and

Diagnosing Pemphigus Foliaceus: A Rare Blistering Disease Masquerading as a Common Dermatologic Disorder.

Pemphigus foliaceus (PF) is an autoimmune dermatologic disease that typically presents with painful, superficial blisters that evolve into scaling erosions in a seborrheic distribution. This case study intends to demonstrate that due to the relative scarcity of the disease and its distribution on the body, PF can easily be misdiagnosed. We present a 43-year-old African American male that presented to the dermatology clinic with an 18-month history of non-pruritic, violaceous, scaling patches and plaques most prominent on the malar cheeks, upper chest and upper back. He had been evaluated at an

Seborrheic Dermatitis in Skin of Color: Clinical Considerations.

Seborrheic dermatitis is a common, relapsing, inflammatory skin condition of unclear etiology. The Malassezia yeast genus are believed to play a role. Seborrheic dermatitis commonly affects areas of the skin with high sebum production, including the scalp, nasolabial folds, glabella, eyebrows, beard, ears, retroauricular skin, sternum, and other skin folds. Seborrheic dermatitis may present differently in individuals with skin of color. Darker-skinned individuals may present with scaly, hypopigmented macules and patches in typical areas of involvement. Arcuate or petal-like patches may be seen

Efficacy and possible mechanisms of botulinum toxin treatment of oily skin.

BACKGROUND: Oily skin is one of the most common dermatological complaints. Oily skin may be accompanied by enlarged pores, acne, and seborrheic dermatitis. Moreover, oily skin has negative effects on self-perception. Most therapeutic approaches used to treat oily skin have had varying degrees of efficacy and include topical treatments, such as photodynamic therapy and lasers. However, certain of these therapies for oily skin may lead to severe side effects. With the expanding use and high safety profile of botulinum toxin type A (BoNT-A), its use in the treatment of oily skin has caused signif
