We present a case of a three-month-old Hispanic female seen in the clinic for atopic dermatitis (AD) along with a rare incidence of associated cephalocervical lymphadenitis. The patient had a three-month history of redness, irritation, inflammation, and pruritus of the scalp, face, torso, and lymph nodes. The history and examination originally indicated seborrheic dermatitis with AD, impetigo, and folliculitis on the differential. Due to the rarity of this presentation, it is crucial to increase clinical recognition and awareness of this combination among physicians to improve patient outcomes

BACKGROUND: The pathophysiology of seborrhoeic dermatitis (SebD) is complex and is likely to be related to an interplay of the microbial colonization of the skin and local immunity. There are also genetic components to the illness. At least two forms of SebD exist, infantile (ISebD), which has onset early in life, and SebD with later onset.
OBJECTIVES: We aimed to improve our understanding of SebD by evaluating whether maternal history of SebD is associated with increased risk of ISebD or childhood-onset SebD (CSebD, with onset after 5 years of life).
METHODS: We performed a prospective coho

Background and objective Scalp dandruff, a prevalent dermatological condition marked by flaking and itching, affects a large segment of the population. Sun exposure, genetics, and dryness, along with winter conditions, indoor heating, and hard water, all contribute to moisture loss and scalp imbalance. This study aimed to evaluate the safety, efficacy, and tolerability of a novel regimen combining a scalp scrub with hydroxy acid derivatives for exfoliation and dandruff removal, and a serum containing copper tripeptide-1, witch hazel (Hamamelis virginiana), hesperidin, hyaluronic acid, and pea

BACKGROUND: Seborrheic dermatitis is a common scalp condition affecting the quality of life of individuals across all age groups. The uninhibited proliferation of Malassezia spp. and enhanced sebaceous gland activity often leads to scalp flaking, mild erythema, and itching, thereby worsening the situation. Here, we aimed to study the efficacy of an antiseptic liquid as a pre-shampoo rinse followed by a non-anti-dandruff shampoo as a dandruff care strategy. Methods: The anti-dandruff efficacy of a chlorhexidine-cetrimide-based antiseptic liquid (ASL) as a pre-shampoo scalp rinse, followed by a

INTRODUCTION: Seborrheic dermatitis (SD) is a common, chronic inflammatory skin disease, but the physical and emotional burden of patients with SD experience has not been well characterized.
METHODS: The Harris Poll conducted online surveys of US patients and healthcare providers (HCPs) from December 2021 to January 2022.
RESULTS: Almost half of patients reported that SD negatively impacts their emotional and physical well-being "a lot/a great deal"; HCPs underestimate the level of impact on patients. Most patients with SD reported a significant mental health impact, including anxiety, depre

This case discusses a 55-year-old patient who was evaluated at a dermatology outpatient clinic for a chronic, pruritic, and painful hyperkeratotic plaque located on her scalp vertex. Given the size of the plaque and its thick, yellow scales, an initial clinical diagnosis of seborrheic dermatitis was favored. However, after weeks of unsuccessful treatment with ketoconazole shampoo, topical fluocinolone 0.01% oil, mupirocin ointment, and oral doxycycline, it became apparent that deeper investigation and reconsideration of the original diagnosis were warranted. A punch biopsy and direct immunoflu

Group A streptococcal infections in children typically present as pharyngitis but can manifest as skin infections. In infants, streptococcal skin infections can be difficult to differentiate from other skin conditions such as seborrheic or atopic dermatitis. Additionally, if another family member has a streptococcal infection or is a carrier, treating only the patient may lead to recurrence. Here, we report a case of recurrent streptococcal skin infection in a one-month-old infant with dry skin. The patient's five-year-old brother had minor nasal symptoms, and a throat swab tested positive for

INTRODUCTION: Scalp seborrheic dermatitis (SSD) is a chronic, relapsing, and inflammatory condition impacting quality of life (QoL). This study evaluated the efficacy and impact on QoL of a 1% selenium disulphide-containing shampoo (SeS2 shampoo) compared to a 2% ketoconazole shampoo.
METHODS: This multi-centric, double-blinded, randomized 4-week study was conducted in 64 adult subjects with moderate to severe SSD (SSD severity score (SSSD) > 6). Shampoo was applied on the scalp and hair, according to product indications. Clinical examinations at baseline and on Day (D) 3, 7, 14, and 28 inclu

Seborrheic dermatitis (SD), a chronic inflammatory skin condition consisting of itchy, red patches with greasy scales, has been linked to numerous systemic conditions. This review evaluates comorbidities and lifestyle factors that are associated with seborrheic dermatitis. A literary search was conducted in August 2024 using EMBASE, PubMed, and Medline Industries, and evaluated according to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. The following results were found from this search. Diet may play a role in seborrheic dermatitis as participants with

Head and neck dermatitis (HND) is a form of atopic dermatitis (AD) that affects the seborrheic areas of the body and causes greater quality of life detriments than other types of AD. HND can be challenging to treat since first-line topical therapies may be ineffective or intolerable for long-term use on areas affected by HND while dupilumab may cause dupilumab-associated HND (DAHND). Current evidence implicates fungi, particularly Malassezia spp., in the pathogenesis of HND. Penetration of fungal antigens through the defective AD skin barrier activates the innate and adaptive immune systems to

Seborrheic pemphigus (SP) represents a localized and superficial form of pemphigus foliaceus (PF) often mistaken for other dermatological conditions such as seborrheic dermatitis (SD) due to clinical similarities. Additionally, SP may be conceptually confused with pemphigus erythematosus (PE) due to historical terminology and overlapping clinical features. We present a case study of a 38-year-old female initially diagnosed with SD but later identified as SP through detailed clinical and histopathological analysis. We discuss the challenges in accurately diagnosing SP, emphasizing the importanc

BACKGROUND: Malassezia globosa is a commensal basidiomycetous yeast occurring on the skin that causes pityriasis versicolor (PV) and seborrheic dermatitis, but that has also been implicated in other dermatoses. Cinnamaldehyde (CM) has antibacterial, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory activities, but the effect of CM on M. globosa-infected PV has not been clarified.
PURPOSE: The study aimed to investigate the possible antifungal and antibiofilm activities of CM against M. globosa-infected PV in vivo and in vitro.
METHODS: The broth microdilution method was used to determine the minimum inhibi

Skin diseases are prevalent globally and can have detrimental effects on the individual's health-related quality of life (HRQoL). The treatment of dermatological patients typically focuses on clinical signs and symptoms and a subjective view of the impact of the disease on the patient's life. Assessing quality of life can help provide patients with better service, by acknowledging their real needs and interfering with treatment decisions. The aim of the study was therefore to assess quality of life of dermatology outpatients and its associated factors. An analytical cross-sectional study was c

Seborrheic dermatitis (SD) often leads to ocular manifestations (OM) that are frequently overlooked. This study comprehensively explains the genesis of these ocular issues, which involves a combination of Malassezia overgrowth, changes in sebum production, and inflammatory responses in the body. The periocular region is rich in sebaceous glands, allowing Malassezia to thrive, which can lead to an inflammatory reaction that spreads to the eye surface, causing disorders such as blepharitis, conjunctivitis, keratitis, and ocular surface diseases. Although epidemiological data are limited, it is w

INTRODUCTION: Artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming increasingly explored for its potential applications in dermatology. Among various AI models, DALL-E 2 (San Francisco, CA: OpenAI), which generates de novoimages from textual inputs, has garnered significant attention for its remarkable photorealism. In our study, we aimed to analyze the performance of DALL-E 2 in the context of dermatology.
METHODS: The following 12 pediatric dermatological conditions common to ages <15 years were selected as tests: acne, atopic dermatitis, contact dermatitis, vitiligo, congenital melanocytic nevus, wart

INTRODUCTION: Factors such as location, climate, dietary habits, and socioeconomic status as well as age and gender all directly influence the development of certain skin disorders. Whilst the pattern of skin diseases has been studied in the Middle East region previously, data on the incidence of these conditions in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is lacking. This retrospective study aims to identify the types and frequency of dermatological disorders encountered at a dermatology outpatient clinic in Dubai, UAE.

Primary atopic disorders (PAD) are monogenic disorders caused by pathogenic gene variants encoding proteins that are key for the maintenance of a healthy skin barrier and a well-functioning immune system. Physicians face the challenge to find single, extremely rare PAD patients/families among the millions of individuals with common allergic diseases. We describe case scenarios with signature PAD. We review the literature and deduct specific clinical red flags for PAD detection. They include a positive family history and/or signs of pathological susceptibility to infections, immunodysregulation
