A Meta-Analysis on the Effectiveness of Sertaconazole 2% Cream Compared with Other Topical Therapies for Seborrheic Dermatitis.

Seborrheic dermatitis (SD) is a relapsing inflammatory skin disorder that affects the seborrheic areas of the body. Its etiology is not completely elucidated; however, the link between disease exacerbations and the proliferation of Malassezia spp., along with the good response to antifungal agents, indicate the role of fungi in its pathophysiology. Sertaconazole nitrate is a relatively new imidazole antifungal agent with a particular structure, consisting in a benzothiophene ring similar to the indole ring of tryptophan, and it acts mainly through the inhibition of ergosterol synthesis and the

Novel and Off-Label Biologic Use in the Management of Hidradenitis Suppurativa, Pyoderma Gangrenosum, Lichen Planus, and Seborrheic Dermatitis: A Narrative Review.

With advances in drug development and our understanding of the pathophysiology of skin disease, biologic medications have emerged as powerful management tools for dermatologists. While biologics have most often been used in the management of psoriasis, they are being used off-label for the management of a variety of other immune-mediated skin diseases with overlapping molecular targets. This narrative review focuses on the novel and off-label use of biologic medications for the management of hidradenitis suppurativa (HS), pyoderma gangrenosum (PG), lichen planus (LP), and seborrheic dermatitis

Unmet needs for patients with seborrheic dermatitis.

Seborrheic dermatitis (SD) is a common skin disease with signs and symptoms that may vary by skin color, associated medical conditions, environmental factors, and vehicle preference. Diagnosis of SD is based on presence of flaky, "greasy" patches, and/or thin plaques accompanied by erythema of the scalp, face, ears, chest, and groin and is associated with pruritus in many patients. The presentation may vary in different skin types and hyper- or hypopigmentation may occur, with or without erythema and minimal or no scaling. While the pathogenesis is not certain, 3 key factors generally agreed u

Seborrheic Dermatitis as a Potential Trigger of Central Centrifugal Cicatricial Alopecia: A Review of Literature.

Central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia (CCCA) is a common form of scarring alopecia that affects the crown or vertex of the scalp as centrifugally spreading patches of permanent hair loss. The etiology of CCCA is uncertain. Genetic predisposition, autoimmune diseases, infections (bacterial and fungal), and other idiopathic factors have all been explored as potential risk factors for the development of CCCA. Seborrheic dermatitis (SD) has been identified in a number of studies as the most common concurrent hair disorder seen in patients with CCCA. The high prevalence of SD in African American

Face mask-induced skin changes: a new common phenomenon during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic.

Coronavirus disease 2019 is a severe acute respiratory syndrome, and wearing a mask is an important preventive measure. However, long-term use can cause maskne, or mask-induced acne. This study evaluated the prevalence, clinical characteristics, and severity of mask-induced acne and its effect on pre-existing dermatosis using an online questionnaire. The questionnaire comprised 15 questions on 6 primary topics: demographic data, type of face mask, dermatological symptoms after using a mask, preexisting dermatological conditions, the duration of use, and the effects of mask use on existing derm

Overview of use, efficacy, and safety of dupilumab in complex patients: a retrospective, case-series study from a large, urban academic center.

Dupilumab has emerged as an effective treatment option for those suffering from moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis (AD). Since its approval in 2017 by the United States Food and Drug Administration, dupilumab demonstrated efficacy in a wide range of "off-label" dermatologic conditions. With its increasing use, dermatologists must navigate prescribing dupilumab in complex patient populations. To that end, we performed a single-institution, retrospective, case-series study to assess efficacy, tolerability, and safety of dupilumab in elderly, patients on concomitant immunosuppressive/immunomodu

A Case of Segmental Darier Disease.

Darier disease (DD), also known as Darier-White disease, follicular keratosis, or dyskeratosis follicularis, is an uncommon autosomal dominant genodermatosis with complete penetrance and variable expressivity. This disorder is caused by mutations in the ATP2A2 gene and affects the skin, nails, and mucous membranes (1,2). A 40-year-old woman, without comorbidities, presented with pruritic, unilateral skin lesions on the trunk since she was 37 years old. Lesions had remained stable since onset, with physical examination revealing tiny scattered erythematous to light brown keratotic papules begin

A Novel Convolutional Neural Network for the Diagnosis and Classification of Rosacea: Usability Study.

BACKGROUND: Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory disease with variable clinical presentations, including transient flushing, fixed erythema, papules, pustules, and phymatous changes on the central face. Owing to the diversity in the clinical manifestations of rosacea, the lack of objective biochemical examinations, and nonspecificity in histopathological findings, accurate identification of rosacea is a big challenge. Artificial intelligence has emerged as a potential tool in the identification and evaluation of some skin diseases such as melanoma, basal cell carcinoma, and psoriasis. OBJECTIVE:

Application of Cellular Resolution Full-Field Optical Coherence Tomography in vivo for the Diagnosis of Skin Tumours and Inflammatory Skin Diseases: A Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND: Optical coherence tomography (OCT) has been shown to provide non-invasive diagnosis of common skin neoplasms, especially basal cell carcinoma. OCT produces a cross-sectional view of the tissue, similar to a traditionally sectioned histopathological view, but the resolution of conventional OCT is low and thus limits clinical application. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate the application ability of a full-field (FF)OCT system which was newly developed to scan the skin at the cellular level. METHODS: Patients with skin tumours or inflammatory lesions warranting biopsy were

Cutaneous manifestations related to the COVID-19 pandemic: a review article.

BACKGROUND: Skin lesions are either caused by COVID-19 disease or they can be due to other driving forces related to the COVID-19 pandemic. AIM: Considering the fact that the reported data in different articles for the type and prevalence of skin manifestations related to the COVID-19 pandemic are inconsistent, we have described the mechanism and type of skin lesions related to the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: In this review article, we have searched the Medline database (PubMed) for the combination of the following key terms "Dermatological Manifestation", "cutaneous Manifestation", "Skin Ma

Cd34+ Stromal Cells/Telocytes in Normal and Pathological Skin.

We studied CD34+ stromal cells/telocytes (CD34+SCs/TCs) in pathologic skin, after briefly examining them in normal conditions. We confirm previous studies by other authors in the normal dermis regarding CD34+SC/TC characteristics and distribution around vessels, nerves and cutaneous annexes, highlighting their practical absence in the papillary dermis and presence in the bulge region of perifollicular groups of very small CD34+ stromal cells. In non-tumoral skin pathology, we studied examples of the principal histologic patterns in which CD34+SCs/TCs have (1) a fundamental pathophysiological r

Associations of particulate matter with atopic dermatitis and chronic inflammatory skin diseases in South Korea.

BACKGROUND: Particulate matter (PM) is a mixture of solid and liquid particles suspended in air, which originates from industrial plants or vehicle emissions. Although the skin is the primary body area of contact with air pollutants, the associations between PM and chronic inflammatory skin diseases has not been well established. AIM: To investigate associations between PM and atopic dermatitis (AD) and between PM and other chronic inflammatory dermatoses, using data from the Korean Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service. METHODS: Monthly disease statistics from the seven largest cit

Quality of Life of Infants, Toddlers and Preschoolers with Seborrhoeic, Allergic Contact and Atopic Dermatitis Before and During COVID-19 Pandemic.

INTRODUCTION: Different aspects of quality of life (QoL) of infants and children with atopic dermatitis (AD) are well studied but there is a lack of studies on seborrhoeic dermatitis (SD) and allergic contact dermatitis (ACD). The aim of this study was to compare the impact of SD, ACD and AD on young children. Parts of questionnaires were filled in during the COVID-19 pandemic and therefore we decided to check if the pandemic affected dermatology-specific health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in our patients. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study approved by the local ethics committee of th

Targeted Delivery of Zinc Pyrithione to Skin Epithelia.

Zinc pyrithione (ZnPT) is an anti-fungal drug delivered as a microparticle to skin epithelia. It is one of the most widely used ingredients worldwide in medicated shampoo for treating dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis (SD), a disorder with symptoms that include skin flaking, erythema and pruritus. SD is a multi-factorial disease driven by microbiol dysbiosis, primarily involving Malassezia yeast. Anti-fungal activity of ZnPT depends on the cutaneous availability of bioactive monomeric molecular species, occurring upon particle dissolution. The success of ZnPT as a topical therapeutic is under
