BACKGROUND: Nickel sensitization is frequent among US patients with dermatitis and in the general population. In Europe, decreasing prevalences of nickel sensitization are observed as a result of the European Union Nickel Directive. However, no directive exists in the United States.
OBJECTIVES: We sought to examine nickel release from inexpensive earrings and discuss possible methods of reducing nickel exposure among consumers.
METHODS: A total of 34 different stores and artists were visited. A total of 277 earrings were purchased and examined with the dimethylglyoxime (DMG) test.

Many patients are currently suffering from nickel (Ni)-induced allergic contact dermatitis (ACD). There have been few Korean studies dealing with the threshold of Ni-induced ACD and quantifying the total amount of Ni in the metal alloys. We report the case of a patient who developed allergic contact hand dermatitis while receiving infliximab infusions for psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis. Patch testing showed multiple positive allergens. To our knowledge, this is the first case report of successful patch testing in a patient receiving tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) blockade therapy. TNF-alpha blockers do not necessarily suppress allergic contact hypersensitivity and are not an absolute contraindication to patch testing.

OBJECTIVE: Nickel is the most common cause of allergic contact dermatitis (ACD). Because nickel restriction is commonly imposed on many patients with the only earlobe ACD to nickel hypersensitivity, the aim of this study was to identify the role of occasional and extended oral nickel exposure in these patients.
DESIGN: This is a case-control study.
SUBJECTS: Thirty-four outpatients, previously diagnosed as monosensitized to nickel, suffering from earlobe dermatitis were enrolled; 11 of them showed active dermatitis. The control group consisted of six healthy (non-nickel-sensitive) subjects.

BACKGROUND: Nickel dermatitis may be caused by frequent and prolonged use of cell phones. Because little is known about the frequency of nickel release from cell phones, it is difficult to estimate the risk of nickel sensitization and dermatitis among their users.
OBJECTIVE: Inspired by a recent case of nickel dermatitis from prolonged cell phone use, the frequency of dimethylglyoxime (DMG)-positive cell phones on the Danish market was investigated.

BACKGROUND: Lymphocyte proliferation testing (LPT) has some advantages over patch testing to diagnose allergic contact dermatitis. It is harmless, objective and can be used in clinical situations where patch testing is not recommended. Unfortunately, significant success has only been achieved with nickel. There are few studies on chromium LPT and they were performed with different methods, leading to inconsistent results.
METHODS: To determine the best parameters for chromium LPT, we tested 20 patients with allergic contact dermatitis to the metal and 20 controls, using various protocols.

Paralysis of the orbicularis oculi muscle in patients with a facial nerve injury causes functional and cosmetic disabilities including inability to close the eyelid. This complication is often treated by implanting a gold weight in the upper eyelid, which, however, is not without side effects.
