Eyelid Dermatitis: Common Patterns and Contact Allergens.

Eyelid dermatitis is a common dermatologic concern representing a broad range of inflammatory dermatoses. The most commonly reported cause of eyelid dermatitis is allergic contact dermatitis (ACD), a type IV delayed hypersensitivity reaction caused by exposure to external allergens that is diagnosed via epicutaneous patch testing. The most common contact allergens associated with eyelid dermatitis are metals, fragrances, preservatives, acrylates, and topical medications, which may be found in a variety of sources, including cosmetics, ophthalmic medications, nail lacquers, and jewelry. Managem

Dermatological dichotomy: Atopic dermatitis or mycosis fungoides?

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

The presence of atopic dermatitis (AD) and mycosis fungoides (MF) presents diagnostic challenges due to their shared clinical features. AD, a chronic skin disorder characterized by pruritic and inflamed lesions, shares these features with MF, which is the most common cutaneous T-cell lymphoma. A 19-year-old male, who had a history of childhood AD, developed eczema-like lesions on his forearms, neck, and head. Initially, allergic contact dermatitis was suspected due to his occupational metal exposure. However, despite treatment with topical therapies, his condition worsened, requiring 3 cycles

A Method to Distinguish Chromium-Tanned Leathers With Low and High Risks of Surface Hexavalent Chromium.

INTRODUCTION: Traces of hexavalent chromium, Cr(VI), are a major concern for skin contact with Cr-tanned leather. Current extraction methods (ISO 17075-1:2017) for Cr(VI) testing do not necessarily reflect the true potential of surface-formed Cr(VI), as extracted concentrations are dependent on previous storage and atmospheric conditions. OBJECTIVES: To test whether a spiking method protocol can distinguish leathers with high and low risks of releasing Cr(VI). METHODS: Two groups of leather types were selected based on previously detected Cr(VI) (group A) and optimal tanning practices with h

Assessment of dermal sensitization by nickel salts in a novel humanized TLR-4 mouse model.

The fundamental goal of this study was to determine the potential utility of a novel humanized Toll-like receptor-4 (hTLR-4) mouse model for future in vivo studies of nickel allergy. First, mice of both sexes and hTLR-4 expression profiles were incorporated into a Local Lymph Node Assay (LLNA) to assess skin sensitization. Next, a set of hTLR-4 hTLR-4-positive mice (female and male groups) was similarly exposed to vehicle control (VC) or 10% NiSO4 on Days 1, 2, and 3. Mice were euthanized on Day 10, lymph node (LN) cellularity was assessed, LN and spleen cells were phenotyped, and serum was co

Interference of the positioning of nickel, chromium and cobalt in the results of patch tests.

BACKGROUND: The positioning of substances, which are co-sensitizers and/or with a tendency to cross-react, is not considered in the technique when applying patch tests (PT). OBJECTIVE: To investigate the interference of the positioning of nickel (Ni), chromium (Cr) and cobalt (Co) in patch tests (PT) results, when applied close or distant from each other. METHODS: PT were performed in patients suspected of allergic contact dermatitis (ACD), using the standard battery (SB), with substances showing a tendency towards cross-react and co-sensitizers applied far apart, and an additional battery (

Aluminium in dermatology - Inside story of an innocuous metal.

Aluminium, the third most abundant element in the earth's crust, was long considered virtually innocuous to humans but has gained importance in the recent past. Aluminium is ubiquitous in the environment, with various sources of exposure like cosmetics, the food industry, occupational industries, the medical field, transport and electronics. Aluminium finds its utility in various aspects of dermatology as an effective haemostatic agent, anti-perspirant and astringent. Aluminium has a pivotal role to play in wound healing, calciphylaxis, photodynamic therapy and vaccine immunotherapy with diagn

Axillary Contact Dermatitis: An Update on Potential Allergens and Management.

The differential diagnosis of dermatoses in the axillae is broad. Contact dermatitis-both irritant and allergic-represents common etiologies. Axillary contact dermatitis can develop following exposure to a variety of irritants and/or allergens. Frequently implicated sources include deodorants, antiperspirants, detergents, soaps, and clothing. Fragrance, a ubiquitous ingredient within these products, as well as metals and dyes, are common causes of contact dermatitis. Clinical assessment, bedside diagnostic techniques, histopathology, and patch testing can aid in the diagnosis and help inform m

Contact Dermatitis From Biomedical Devices, Implants, and Metals-Trouble From Within.

Allergic contact dermatitis is characterized by its appearance of red, raised and infiltrated, scaling or scabbed skin and intense pruritus, and distinguished from irritant contact dermatitis by its specific immune process and histopathology. Many contact allergens are low-molecular- weight chemicals including metals such as nickel, cobalt, and chromium, preservatives, and adhesives. When such materials are used internally in biomedical devices, they are similarly capable of causing sensitization and an inflammatory response. Sometimes, the reaction remains internal, and presents as swelling,

Fragrance Contact Allergy - A Review Focusing on Patch Testing.

Fragrance materials are widely used in various types of products in daily life and many of them can be contact sensitizers. Contact allergy to fragrances has been reported to be common worldwide. Unlike other groups of contact allergens such as metals and preservatives, fragrance materials in consumer products can be present as single fragrance chemicals or in the form of mixtures known as natural complex substances. Due to the complexity of the fragrance materials and the high number of fragrance substances known to cause contact sensitization, selecting suitable materials for patch testing i
