Nickel, cobalt, and chromium in nail sticker and tip products in Korea.

BACKGROUND: Nail stickers and nail tips are increasingly used nail products in Korea, and the rest of the world. However, no studies have examined if these specific consumer products might contain nickel, cobalt, and/or chromium, that is, metals known to provoke contact allergy. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to assess the release and content of nickel, cobalt, and chromium in nail stickers and tips by performing qualitative and quantitative analyses, respectively, of 50 convenience samples purchased in Korea. METHODS: Eighty-six qualitative spot tests were performed to determine the release of nickel,

Determination of Selected Harmful Substances in Baby Diapers Available on the South African Market.

Baby diaper rash is a common problem, especially allergic contact dermatitis, which could be due to heavy metals, pH, formaldehyde, or allergens in the diapers. This study reports on the determination of formaldehyde, heavy metals (Pb, As, Co, Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, Mn, Sr, Fe, and Cd), and pH in diapers purchased from low-, medium-, and high-end stores. Inductively coupled plasma was used to determine the concentrations of heavy metals after extraction using artificial urine and artificial sweat. All heavy metals were found in all diapers except Sr, which was not found in sample M7. All samples had

Occupational Hand Dermatitis.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Occupational hand dermatitis is a common work-related disorder of the skin. Prevention and management of this disease is critical to improving workers' quality of life and for occupation-specific retention. RECENT FINDINGS: This is a critical review of the current literature on occupational hand dermatitis. Occupational dermatitis continues to have a high prevalence among workers although the overall incidence may be slowly decreasing. Irritant contact dermatitis due to wet work exposure is the most common cause of occupational hand dermatitis. Healthcare workers, hairdress

Characterization of Metal-Specific T-Cells in Inflamed Oral Mucosa in a Novel Murine Model of Chromium-Induced Allergic Contact Dermatitis.

The element chromium (Cr) is a component of several types of alloys found in the environment, or utilized in dentistry, that may cause intraoral metal contact allergy. However, the pathological mechanism of intraoral Cr allergy remains unclear because there is no established animal model of Cr allergy in the oral mucosa. In this study, we established a novel murine model of Cr-induced intraoral metal contact allergy and elucidated the immune response in terms of cytokine profiles and T-cell receptor repertoire. Two sensitizations with Cr plus lipopolysaccharide solution into the postauricular

Identification of microRNA Signatures in Peripheral Blood of Young Women as Potential Biomarkers for Metal Allergy.

MicroRNA (miRNA) is a short (19-24 nucleotide) endogenous non-protein RNA that exists in the body and controls the translation process from genes to proteins. It has become useful as a diagnostic tool and a potential treatment target in cancer research. To explore the function of miRNA in contact dermatitis, female participants with a positive metal allergy diagnosis (n = 3) were enrolled along with additional female participants with no medical history of metal allergy (n = 3). A patch test was performed on each participant. Peripheral blood was collected from all the participants before the

Type IVb Hypersensitivity Reaction in the Novel Murine Model of Palladium-Induced Intraoral Allergic Contact Mucositis.

Palladium (Pd) is a component of several alloy types that are widely used in our environment, including several dental alloy types that cause adverse reactions such as hypersensitivity in the oral mucosa. However, the pathological mechanism of intraoral Pd allergies remains unclear because its animal model in the oral mucosa has not been established. In this study, we established a novel murine model of Pd-induced allergies in the oral mucosa, and explored the immune response of cytokine profiles and T cell diversity in terms of the T cell receptor. The Pd-induced allergy mouse was generated b

Cross-Reactivity of Intraoral Allergic Contact Mucositis in the Nickel-Sensitized Ear Model of Metal Allergy.

Cross-reactivity of metal allergies can make metal allergy treatment complicated because the background of immune response in cross-reactions remains unknown. In clinical settings, cross-reactivity among several metals has been suspected. However, the precise mechanism of immune response in cross-reactivity is unclear. Two sensitizations with nickel, palladium, and chromium plus lipopolysaccharide solution into the postauricular skin were followed by a single nickel, palladium, and chromium challenge of the oral mucosa to generate the intraoral metal contact allergy mouse model. Results showed

Analysis of Hexavalent Chromium in Cement Samples From Countries Within and Outside the EU: A Study From the International Contact Dermatitis Research Group.

Background: Allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) caused by hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) is often severe and difficult to treat. The content of Cr(VI) in cement can be reduced by, for example, addition of iron(II) sulfate. Since 2005 the content of Cr(VI) in cement is regulated in the EU Directive 2003/53/EC and must not exceed 2 ppm. Since this regulation came into force, ACD caused by cement has markedly been reduced. Objective: To investigate Cr(VI) and total chromium content in samples of cement from countries within and outside the EU. Methods: The members of the International Contact Dermati

Endoplasmic reticulum stress and the inflammatory response in allergic contact dermatitis.

Maintaining homeostasis is central to organismal health. Deviation is detected by a variety of sensors that react to alarm signals arising from injury, infection, and other inflammatory triggers. One important element of this alarm system is the innate immune system, which recognizes pathogen-/microbe- or damage-associated molecular patterns via pattern recognition receptors localized in the cytosol or in membranes of innate immune cells such as macrophages, dendritic cells, and mast cells but also of T cells, B cells, and epithelial cells. Activation of the innate immune system results in inf

Evaluating the role of protective creams on the cutaneous penetration of Ni nanoparticles.

There is an increase of application of Nickel in the form of nanoparticles (NiNPs) in several fields including modern metallurgy, bioengineering, and medicine. Such growth of the areas of application is actually accompanied with an increase of exposure to Nickel, thus an intensification of the negative effects, the most frequent being the allergic contact dermatitis. Indeed, due to their smaller size, and therefore their higher surface area, NiNPs can release more Ni ions compared to bulk material, that can penetrate and permeate through the skin. To reduce the Ni cutaneous penetration, barrie
