Natural Matrine-Integrated Pollen Delivery Systems for Allergic Contact Dermatitis Treatment.

Allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) is an inflammatory dermatitis with a high morbidity and recurrence rate. Scientific attention is focused on the development of safe and comfortable therapeutics of ACD. Herein, we propose a natural matrine-integrated pollen delivery system for the ACD treatment. Sunflower pollens were collected and defatted to serve as adhesive drug carriers for matrine. Specifically, the exquisite porous and hollow structures of the pollen shells can absorb matrine and realize the sustained drug release. Besides, the prickly surface morphology can strongly adhere to the infla

Polyelectrolyte Complex Coacervate Adhesive for Wearable Medical Devices.

Wearable electronics are becoming increasingly popular for personalized healthcare. These devices often use hydrophobic, pressure-sensitive adhesives to adhere to various parts of the body. With prolonged skin contact, commercial adhesives have been shown to cause allergic contact dermatitis as well as significant loss of adhesive strength when exposed to moisture and ionic compounds, such as sweat. To address these common issues, the development of a polyelectrolyte-based skin adhesive for wearable devices is underway. Here, it is demonstrated how coacervation is induced with a system compose

Managing Contact Dermatitis Related to Amputee Care.

Amputees who use prosthetic devices are particularly vulnerable to contact dermatitis due to factors such as moisture, friction, and prolonged exposure to prosthetic materials. Distinguishing between allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) and irritant contact dermatitis (ICD) can be difficult, as the symptoms often overlap; therefore, careful evaluation of patient history, clinical features, and diagnostic tests is required. Allergic contact dermatitis in amputees frequently is triggered by exposure to materials such as rubber, metal, and adhesives, whereas ICD often is caused by friction and moist

Allergic Contact Dermatitis From Dental Bonding Materials Containing Methacrylate: A Report of Two Cases.

Dental practitioners face occupational hazards, including allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) from materials like methacrylates found in dental bonding agents. ACD is a localized immune reaction causing dry skin, eczema, and sores. Despite using gloves, these chemicals can penetrate and cause skin reactions. The presented cases are of two dental practitioners who complained of signs and symptoms of ACD on the skin of their hands following regular restorative procedures. Later on, these complaints were diagnosed as ACD. The two male dentists developed ACD on the dorsal side of their hands due to

Evaluation of the irritation and sensitization potential of medical-grade Norway spruce (Picea abies) resin salve: single-blind modified draize human repeat insult patch test in healthy volunteers.

BACKGROUND: Abilar® is a wound salve containing 10% medical-grade Norway spruce (Picea abies) resin, known for its antimicrobial and wound-healing properties. However, isolated reports of allergic contact dermatitis have raised concerns regarding its cutaneous safety profile. It is thus important to evaluate any potential for skin irritation and sensitisation. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the irritation and sensitisation potential of the resin salve using a modified Draize Human Repeat Insult Patch Test (HRIPT) in a healthy adult cohort, thereby providing toxicological insights relevant to both cl

Potential Allergens in Medical Adhesives in Tapes, Wound Dressings, and Ostomy Care: A Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Medical adhesives are increasingly reported, although still underestimated as causes of allergic contact dermatitis, for which identification of the sensitising culprits is often impossible, mainly because of non-declaration of components on medical device packaging and lack of cooperation from manufacturers. OBJECTIVES: To report on the allergens identified in medical adhesives in tapes, wound dressings, and ostomy care. METHODS: The relevant literature (1980-2024) on sensitization sources and allergens was analysed and the results reported. CONCLUSION: The main reported contac

Delayed adverse skin reaction to transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) electrodes.

A 76-year-old woman developed a delayed allergic reaction to adhesive pads following home use of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) for pain management after a complex elbow dislocation. This case highlights the potential for delayed hypersensitivity reactions to TENS electrode pads. Although formal allergology testing was not performed, the woman's self-directed observations offered valuable insight. The clinical presentation and timing of symptom onset were more consistent with allergic rather than irritant contact dermatitis. Allergic contact dermatitis from TENS pads is oft

Prophylactic Intranasal Corticosteroids to Prevent Contact Dermatitis From Ambulatory ECG Monitor Adhesives: A Novel Strategy.

Ambulatory electrocardiogram (AECG) monitors are frequently used to evaluate arrhythmias and assess symptom-rhythm correlation. The extended use of AECG monitors is limited by complications, such as allergic contact dermatitis, secondary to the adhesive. We present the case of a 70-year-old woman with newly diagnosed paroxysmal atrial fibrillation and a known adhesive allergy who developed an allergic contact dermatitis shortly after the application of an AECG monitor. After her symptoms were managed with a topical corticosteroid, fluticasone propionate nasal spray was used as a novel, off-lab

A call to combat the burden of Allergic Contact Dermatitis among children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes mellitus using medical adhesives: a cross-sectional observational study.

BACKGROUND: The increasing prevalence of Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1D) has led to the development of advanced technologies such as Continuous Glucose Monitors (CGMs) and insulin infusion pumps. These devices rely on adhesives to attached to the skin, which can trigger Allergic Contact Dermatitis (ACD) in some individuals. Despite their growing use, data on ACD prevalence among children/adolescents with T1D using adhesive-based medical devices in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region remains limited. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of ACD in chi

Hypersensitivity Reactions to Liquid Skin Adhesives in Orthopaedic Surgery: A Review of the Literature.

» Skin adhesives are increasingly used in orthopaedic surgery because they provide secure incision closure, limit postoperative drainage, support wound integrity, and may reduce operative time. However, allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) remains an important consideration with their use. ACD is a hypersensitivity skin reaction seen in some patients exposed to surgical adhesives, particularly the 2-octyl cyanoacrylate ingredient. It can be difficult to distinguish ACD from cellulitis or surgical site infections due to overlapping clinical features. Timely recognition is critical, as early manage
