Identifying and Prioritizing Hazardous Chemicals in Construction Metal Structure Coating Systems: A Roadmap for Data-Driven Disease Prevention.

INTRODUCTION: Occupational exposure as a painter was classified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) as a Group 1 carcinogen (carcinogenic to humans) in 1989. Chemical agents responsible for cancers and other illnesses among industrial painters are not well-documented. The goal of this systematic review and synthesis was to document the chemistries of metal structure coating systems, summarize data gaps on occupational exposures and health effects among painters, and identify and prioritize hazardous chemicals to guide future exposure and occupational health studies, and u

Topical Sunscreens: A Narrative Review for Contact Sensitivity, Potential Allergens, Clinical Evaluation, and Management for their Optimal Use in Clinical Practice.

Topical sunscreens decrease the quantity of ultraviolet (UV) light from the sun reaching the skin by either blocking or scattering it and help protect the skin from dyspigmentation, photoaging, DNA damage, and photocarcinogenesis, especially in photosensitive individuals. The significant role played by visible light and infrared light in skin pigmentation and photoaging has been recognized in recent years. The majority of broad-spectrum sunscreens protect against UV-B (290-320nm) and UV-A (320-400nm) radiation. Allergic reactions to sunscreens were relatively uncommon compared to their widespr

Sunscreens: A Review of UV Filters and Their Allergic Potential.

Abstract Active ingredients of sunscreens, or UV filters, have increased in use because public awareness of sun safety has risen. In addition to this intentional use, unintentional exposures to UV filters also occur through application of personal care products, where the filters are incorporated into the product. There are 2 main types of UV filters: organic (chemical) filters and the 2 inorganic (mineral) filters, titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. Both allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) and photoallergic contact dermatitis (PACD) have been caused by organic filters; oxybenzone (benzophenone-3)

Heavy metals in contact dermatitis: A review.

Contact dermatitis is an inflammatory skin reaction caused by direct contact with chemical substances in the environment and can either be irritant or allergic in nature. The clinical symptoms of contact dermatitis, include local skin rash, itching, redness, swelling, and lesions. Nowadays, 15-20% of people have some degree of contact dermatitis, which can be more or less severe. Immune responses in allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) are due to the effects of cytokines and allergen-specific CD4+ and CD8+ T cells on the skin. Acids and alkalis such as drain cleaners, plants such as poinsettias,

Non-animal approaches for photoallergenicity safety assessment: Needs and perspectives for the toxicology for the 21st century.

Certain chemicals and/or their byproducts are photoactivated by UV/VIS and trigger a dermal allergenic response, clinically recognized as photoallergic contact dermatitis (PACD). It is important to identify the chemicals which are potentially photoallergenic, not only for establishing the correct differential diagnosis between PACD and other photodermatoses, but also as causative agents which should be avoided as a preventative measure. Moreover, materials with photoallergenic properties need to be correctly identified to allow thorough safety assessments for their use in finished products (e.

Chemical- and Drug-Induced Allergic, Inflammatory, and Autoimmune Diseases Via Haptenation.

Haptens are small molecules that only elicit an immune response when bound to proteins. Haptens initially bind to self-proteins and activate innate immune responses by complex mechanisms via inflammatory cytokines and damage-associated molecular patterns and the subsequent upregulation of costimulatory signals such as cluster of differentiation 86 (CD86) on dendritic cells. Subsequent interactions between CD86 and CD28 on T cells are critically important for properly activating naive T cells and inducing interleukin 2 production, leading to the establishment of adaptive immunity via effector a

Pterin-lysine photoadduct: a potential candidate for photoallergy.

Photoallergy is a photosensitivity disorder associated with a modified ability of the skin to react to the combined effect of drugs and sunlight. It has been attributed to the covalent conjugation of proteins with a photosensitizer, yielding modified macromolecules that can act as antigen provoking the immune system response. The potential role of some endogenous compounds as photoallergens has not been fully established. It has been previously proposed that pterins, which are endogenous photosensitizers present in human skin under pathological conditions, are able to covalently bind to protei

Allergies caused by textiles: control, research and future perspective in the medical field.

Textile production forms one of the most polluting industries worldwide. However, other than damaging environmental effects, chemical waste products, such as formaldehyde or thiazolinone, are problematic for human health, as allergic potential is present in these compounds. Mostly, contact dermatitis occurs when human skin is exposed to textiles. Moreover, non-eczemous variants are mainly associated to textiles. In order to diagnose the possible allergy of the patient towards these compounds, in vivo and in vitro methods ca be performed, such as patch testing or cytokine detection assays, resp

Quantitative risk assessment of allergens leaching from menstrual hygiene products.

Allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) often associated with the topical use of perfumed products, remains one of the most common chronic skin disorders in Western countries. Since labelling of scented menstrual hygiene products (MHPs) is not mandatory, women might be unknowingly exposed to allergens. Given that vaginal mucosae lack the vital barrier function of the skin, skin allergens can easily penetrate and become systemically available and hence women may experience adverse effects in the anogenital region. The aim of this study was therefore to investigate whether women using scented MHPs are

IL-25 contributes to development of chronic contact dermatitis in C57BL/6 mice, but not BALB/c mice.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic inflammatory skin disease characterized by type 2 immune responses. Interleukin-25 (IL-25) is produced predominantly by epithelial cells. It can activate Th2 cells to produce type 2 cytokines such as IL-4, IL-5 and IL-13, contributing to host defense against nematodes. However, excessive/inappropriate production of IL-25 is considered to be involved in development of type 2 cytokine-associated allergic disorders such as asthma. On the other hand, the contribution of IL-25 to the pathogenesis of AD remains poorly understood. In the present study, we found tha

Bleaching powders, bleaching creams and other hair lightening preparations as sources for (airborne) allergic contact dermatitis and other health effects in hairdressers: Results of an empirical study.

BACKGROUND: Various products are available for lightening hair. There are no data on which applications are actually used in hairdressing, impeding proper estimation of actual exposure and necessary preventive measures. OBJECTIVES: To assess information about availability, usage and formulation of lightening preparations in the German hairdressing trade. METHODS: A market survey was conducted and hairdressers were surveyed by online questionnaires. RESULTS: Of 783 hairdressers clicking the link, 565 hairdressers (91.2% female, mean age of 40.2 ± 11.7 years) from all German states responded

Promoting Integrated Care in Eczematous Dermatitis and Dry Sensitive Skin.

Sensitive skin exposed to external insults (i.e., allergens, chemicals, and radiation) becomes erythematosus, and with repeated aggravations may become chronically dry. This is often observed in atopic dermatitis and allergic contact dermatitis, two skin conditions that display key pathogenic components: barrier dysfunction, skewed inflammatory immune response, and pruritus. Recent studies have evidenced that oxidative stress is a possible fourth component of the pathogenesis of sensitive skin. In patients with persistent disease, new agents and combination therapies that target oxidative stre

Ketoprofen-induced Photoallergic Reaction.

Dear Editor, Photoallergic reactions are classic T-cell-mediated or delayed-type hypersensitivity reactions of the skin in response to a photoallergen (or a cross-reacting chemical) to which a subject was sensitized in the past (1). The immune system recognizes the changes caused by ultraviolet (UV) radiation; it produces antibodies and causes inflammation of the skin in the exposed areas (2). Common photoallergic drugs and ingredients are included in some sunscreens, aftershave lotions, antimicrobials (especially sulfonamides), non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), diuretics, antico
