Gloves are now worn routinely by most general dental practitioners and dental students while treating patients, with latex being the most commonly used glove material. By means of a questionnaire, this study surveyed 160 students in one dental school and 300 randomly selected general dental practitioners in respect of their exposure to latex. Response rates were 74.4 per cent and 57.3 per cent for dental students and practitioners respectively. Baker and confectioner apprentices have been included in a prospective follow-up study in the region of East Thuringia, to evaluate risk factors for the development of hand dermatitis. Starting in August 1996, the apprentices have been interviewed and examined in a standardized way right at the beginning (n=91) of their vocational training, 6 (n=79) and 12 months (n=63) later. This study reports late skin-prick-test (SPT) reactions in seven bakers and seven control subjects to malted wheat appearing after 6-10 h, and not preceded by an immediate-phase reaction. Two subjects in each group had a history of atopic symptoms and were Phadiatope positive. Serologic IgE analysis (RAST) of normal wheat flour and of malted wheat grain was negative in all subjects. The skin is very often the target organ of allergic reactions. This may be explained by many immunological competent cells in this organ such as the Langerhans cell, mast cells, lymphocytes, neutrophils and eosinophils. We have developed quantitative structure-toxicity relationship (QSTR) models for assessing dermal sensitization using guinea pig maximization test (GPMT) results.
