A 43-year-old woman was hospitalized with skin eruption and liver dysfunction complicated with disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) after taking Proporis, a so-called health food. Her clinical course was well correlated with discontinuation and the retaking of Proporis. A population-based study was performed to investigate incidence rates of occupational skin disease (OSD) in bakers, confectioners and cooks, as well as the rôle of endogenous and exogenous risk factors. A prospective study of 72 consecutive patients with symptoms of allergy is presented. Patients aged 20-39 years formed the bulk of the study population (55.6%). Most patients had allergic rhinitis (48.6%); bronchial asthma and atopic dermatitis occurred in 29 patients (40.3%) each. Drug allergies were found in 22 patients (30.6%), urticaria in 15 (20.8%), food allergies in 13 (18.1%), contact dermatitis in 10 (13.9%) and allergic conjuctivitis in 6 patients (8.3%). Findings are presented from the initial cross sectional phase of a cohort study of employees exposed to flour in bakeries or mills. IgE-mediated contact urticaria syndrome (CUS) is one of the manifestations of allergy in childhood atopic dermatitis (AD). Allergens such as foods and animal products penetrate the skin easily. The incidence of latex-induced allergy has been reported to be increasing in Europe and the US but not in Japan.
