Skin sensitizing effects of sulfur mustard and other alkylating agents in accordance to OECD guidelines.

Vesicants cause a multitude of cutaneous reactions like erythema, blisters and ulcerations. After exposure to sulfur mustard (SM) and related compounds, patients present dermal symptoms typically known for chemicals categorized as skin sensitizer (e.g. hypersensitivity and flare-up phenomena). However, although some case reports led to the assumption that SM and other alkylating compounds represent sensitizers, a comprehensive investigation of SM-triggered immunological responses has not been conducted so far. Based on a well-structured system of in chemico and in vitro test methods, the Organ

Medicated adhesive dressing is a safe and non-inferior cutaneous seal as compared to compound tincture benzoin dermal seal for percutaneous interventions.

BACKGROUND: Compound tincture benzoin (CTB) is used as a post-procedure skin seal antiseptic agent since ancient times; but this drug is reported to cause allergic contact dermatitis and other unwanted side effects. Our aim of the present study was to compare alternative agent like Medicated Adhesive dressing (MAD) with CTB as a post-procedure skin seal dressing. DESIGN: This prospective randomized controlled experimental study included an equal number of patients in MAD and CTB as a post-operative seal dressing material for percutaneous interventions. Both the groups were graded for various

Anti-inflammatory and immunoregulatory effects of paeoniflorin and total glucosides of paeony.

As a Traditional Chinese Medicine, Paeonia lactiflora Pallas has been used to treat pain, inflammation and immune disorders for more than 1000 years in China. Total glycoside of paeony (TGP) is extracted from the dried root of Paeonia lactiflora Pallas. Paeoniflorin (Pae) is the major active component of TGP. Our research group has done a lot of work in the pharmacological mechanisms of Pae and found that Pae possessed extensive anti-inflammatory and immune regulatory effects. Pae could inhibit inflammation in the animal models of autoimmune diseases, such as experimental arthritis, psoriatic

Proderm technology: a water- based lipid delivery system for dermatitis that penetrates viable epidermis and has antibacterial effects.

BACKGROUND: A defective skin barrier and bacterial colonization are two important factors in maintenance and progression of atopic dermatitis and chronic allergic/irritant hand dermatitis. A water-based lipid delivery system containing physiologic lipids was previously shown to be a useful adjunct in the treatment of hand dermatitis. We tested the ability of this formulation to penetrate into the viable epidermis and in addition assessed its antibacterial properties. METHODS: Epidermal penetration of the product was assessed by fluorescence microscopy. Recovery of Escherichia coli and Staphyl

Contact Dermatitis in the Elderly: Predisposing Factors, Diagnosis, and Management.

Increased aging of the general population is a well-known fact with serious effects on health systems worldwide. Skin aging involves various immunological and structural changes that increase the risk of numerous skin diseases such as contact dermatitis. Contact dermatitis is characterized by an inflammation of the skin caused by an interaction between the skin and external agents and is divided into irritant and allergic contact dermatitis. Irritant contact dermatitis occurs on skin areas directly exposed to irritant substances, which results in a stream of pro-inflammatory cytokines mediatin

Cross-elicitation responses to 2-methoxymethyl-p-phenylenediamine in p-phenylenediamine highly allergic volunteers using allergy alert test: the Italian experience.

Background. Allergic contact dermatitis after exposure to p-phenylenediamine (PPD)-containing hair dye products is a common and important clinical problem. Because there is a high rate of cross-elicitation of allergic contact dermatitis to other important hair dye products (such as p-toluene diamine [PTD] and other aminophenol hair dyes) in PPD allergic patients, safer alternative dyes with excellent hair coloring options are needed. We studied 2-methoxy methyl-PPD (Me-PPD), a chemical derivative of PPD for tolerance versus cross-elicitation in a cohort of eight PPD-allergic volunteers. Object

Review of the safety of octocrylene used as an ultraviolet filter in cosmetics.

Octocrylene or octocrilene is an organic ultraviolet (UV) filter which absorbs mainly UVB radiation and short UVA wavelengths. It is used in various cosmetic products to either provide an appropriate sun protection factor in sunscreen products or to protect cosmetic formulations from UV radiation. There is no discussion that UV filters are beneficial ingredients in cosmetics since they protect from skin cancer, but octocrylene has been recently incriminated to potentially induce adverse effects on the endocrine system in addition to having allergic and/or photoallergic potential. However, the

Methylisothiazolinone and isothiazolinone allergy.

Methylisothiazolinone (MI) is a preservative commonly used in water-based personal care products. Increases in the allowable concentration of MI alone in these products has led to an epidemic of allergic contact dermatitis (ACD). Although personal care products are the most common source of MI contact allergy, other novel exposures include household products, industrial chemicals, paint, slime, and adhesive agents. Other isothiazolinones such as benzisothiazoline (BIT) and octylisothiazolinone (OIT) are uncommon in personal care products but have been found in leather products, glue, industria

Anti-inflammatory Properties of Cannabidiol, a Nonpsychotropic Cannabinoid, in Experimental Allergic Contact Dermatitis.

Phytocannabinoids modulate inflammatory responses by regulating the production of cytokines in several experimental models of inflammation. Cannabinoid type-2 (CB2) receptor activation was shown to reduce the production of the monocyte chemotactic protein-2 (MCP-2) chemokine in polyinosinic-polycytidylic acid [poly-(I:C)]-stimulated human keratinocyte (HaCaT) cells, an in vitro model of allergic contact dermatitis (ACD). We investigated if nonpsychotropic cannabinoids, such as cannabidiol (CBD), produced similar effects in this experimental model of ACD. HaCaT cells were stimulated with poly-(
