Clinically overt aortic aneurysm in giant cell arteritis: a nationwide hospital-based study.

BACKGROUND: Epidermal Langerhans cells (LCs) play a critical role in the induction of contact hypersensitivity. The LCs leave the skin, move to the regional lymph nodes and present the allergens embedded in the HLA-DR molecule to naive T-lymphocytes. To allow LC emigration from the epidermis, E-cadherin must be downregulated. In this study, we have examined the early events that occur in the human epidermis after exposure to three strong contact sensitizers and two commonly used fragrances by examining alterations of E-cadherin and HLA-DR expression. METHODS: To determine whether E-cadherin a

Role of polyethylene glycol to alleviate lead stress in Raphanus sativus.

The continuous contamination of heavy metals (HMs) in our ecosystem due to industrialization, urbanization and other anthropogenic activities has become a serious environmental constraint to successful crop production. Lead (Pb) toxicity causes ionic, oxidative and osmotic injuries which induce various morphological, physiological, metabolic and molecular abnormalities in plants. Polyethylene glycol (PEG) is widely used to elucidate drought stress induction and alleviation mechanisms in treated plants. Some recent studies have unveiled the potential of PEG in regulating plant growth and develo

The Effect of Alcohol-Based Virucidal Hand Sanitizers on Skin Barrier Function-A Randomised Experimental Study.

BACKGROUND: Applying alcohol-based hand rubs (ABHRs) is a proven means of combating hand-borne microorganisms. In addition to their bactericidal activity, some rubs also have virucidal properties (ABVHRs). Frequent use of ABHRs can result in skin irritation. OBJECTIVES: This study investigates the impact of four commercially available ABVHRs on skin function (ABVHR A-D). ABVHR-A and ABVHR-B contained ethanol in higher concentrations, whereas ABVHR-C and ABVHR-D comprised ethanol and 1-propanol at lower concentrations combined with phosphoric acid (PA). METHODS: Using occlusion-modified tande

Topical supplementation with physiological lipids rebalances the stratum corneum ceramide profile and strengthens skin barrier function in adults predisposed to atopic dermatitis.

BACKGROUND: People with atopic dermatitis (AD) suffer from dry, itchy skin with reduced skin barrier function that leaves it prone to irritant and allergen penetration. Alterations in the composition and structure of the stratum corneum (SC) lipid lamellae underpin this increase in permeability. A wide range of emollients is used to ameliorate the skin of patients with AD, but the majority have unclear effects on the lipid lamellae and barrier function. OBJECTIVES: To compare the effects of a multivesicular emulsion containing physiological lipids and glycerine (MVE + GL) with a commonly pres

Bullous impetigo-like irritant contact dermatitis caused by perfume.

Contact dermatitis usually presents as erythematous macules, papules, and vesicles. Sometimes, unusual clinical presentations of contact dermatitis are reported, including pustular, lymphomatoid, lichenoid, and pigmented variants. We describe the first patient with bullous irritant contact dermatitis caused by perfume, mimicking impetigo lesions. We report this case to raise awareness concerning the possibility of serious cutaneous reactions, such as bullous impetigo-like irritant contact dermatitis due to perfumes which are ubiquitous, especially after direct contact with the solution. Perfum

Different types of emollient cream exhibit diverse physiological effects on the skin barrier in adults with atopic dermatitis.

BACKGROUND: Eczema (atopic dermatitis; AD) is a very common itchy skin condition affecting 1 in 5 children and up to 1 in 10 adults worldwide. The skin of eczema sufferers is prone to redness, irritation and dryness because it does not form an effective barrier, i.e. the ability of the skin to stop irritants, allergens and microorganisms getting into the body. Skin barrier dysfunction is a hallmark of AD. The regular and liberal (600 g/week for an adult) use of emollients is recommended for all patients with eczema), even between episodes of itching and redness, to soften and soothe the skin.

The Role of Singlet Oxygen in Photoreactivity and Phototoxicity of Curcumin.

Curcumin is a plant-derived yellow-orange compound widely used as a spice, dye and food additive. It is also believed to have therapeutic effects against different disorders. On the other hand, there are data showing its phototoxicity against bacteria, fungi and various mammalian cells. Since the mechanism of its phototoxic action is not fully understood, we investigated here the phototoxic potential of curcumin in liposomal model membranes and in HaCaT cells. First, detection of singlet oxygen (1 O2 ) luminescence proved that curcumin generates 1 O2 upon blue light irradiation in organic solv

SKIN FEATURES IMPORTANT FOR THE OCCURRENCE OF CONTACT DERMATITIS IN HEALTHCARE WORKERS.

The occurrence of skin lesions in healthcare workers is associated with a negative impact on important skin functions, including protection from mechanical injuries, sunlight, dehydration, and penetration of chemical substances or pathogenic microorganisms. In healthcare professionals, the most common occupational skin disease is contact dermatitis (CD), either irritant (ICD) or allergic (ACD), and typically on the hands. ICD accounts for about 80% of occupational CD, making it the most frequent cause. According to the literature, CD frequency is higher among healthcare professionals than othe

Evaluation of skin sensitization induced by four ionic liquids.

Ionic liquids (ILs) are synthetic solvents used as replacements for volatile organic solvents. Human exposure occurs through dermal or oral routes. In rodents, several ILs were reported to induce dermal toxicity, irritation, and sensitization. Due to the potential for occupational exposure, and industrial use as nonvolatile solvents, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride (EMIM, 6.25% to 50% v/v), 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride (BMIM, 3.12% to 12.5% v/v), 1-butyl-1-methylpyrrolidinium chloride (BMPY, 0.825% to 6.25% v/v), and N-butylpyridinium chloride (NBuPY, 0.825% to 12.5% v/v) were nom

Evaluation of phototoxic and cytotoxic potential of TiO2 nanosheets in a 3D reconstructed human skin model.

Despite a continuous increase of commercial products containing nanoparticles, only few materials are currently used in such large amounts, forms and sizes as titanium dioxide - TiO2. Besides its use in cosmetics, food industry and biomedicine, TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) are also used as highly efficient photocatalysts due to their unique ability to convert complex organic materials to carbon dioxide, water and simple mineral acids via complex radical and electron transfer reactions. The main objective of the current project was to assess the potential dermal effect (phototoxicity and skin toxic

Skin barrier function after repeated short-term application of alcohol-based hand rub following intervention with water immersion or occlusion.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol-based hand rub (ABHR) is recommended for hand hygiene, and application on dry skin is generally well tolerated. However, hydration of the skin may lead to increased susceptibility to ABHR. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate if increased skin hydration changes skin barrier response to ABHR, as compared to application on dry skin. METHODS: Twenty healthy volunteers participated in a 3-day experimental setup. Intervention areas on the forearms were exposed to either water immersion or occlusion followed by repeated exposures to ABHR. Skin barrier function was assessed by measurement of

Ethanol-Based Disinfectants Containing Urea May Reduce Soap Sensitivity.

BACKGROUND: The use of disinfectants is crucial to preventing the spread of nosocomial infections in health care workers. As many as 25 applications of hand disinfectants is a realistic default value during a working day. However, alcohol-based hand disinfectants may weaken skin barrier function and induce dryness and eczema, which decrease their acceptance. How irritant are n-propanol and isopropanol? - A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: The use of alcoholic-based hand rubs (ABHRs) is an important tool for hand hygiene, especially in times of the COVID-19 pandemic. Possible irritant effects of ABHR may prevent their use by persons at risk of infection. METHODS: This systematic review is based on a PubMed search of articles published between January 2000 and September 2019 in English and German, and a manual search, related to the irritation potential of alcohol-based disinfectants restricted to n-propanol (1-propanol) and its structural isomer isopropanol (isopropyl alcohol, 2-propanol).
