Ethoxylated alcohols, widely used as surfactants, are known to be susceptible to oxidation when exposed to air. At autoxidation, a complex mixture is formed, in which alkyl poly(ethylene glycol) aldehydes, alkyl poly(ethylene glycol) formates, hydroxyaldehydes, and formaldehyde have previously been identified. Contact dermatitis is the most frequent occupational dermatosis and non-specific irritants in addition to specific Type IV sensitization are involved. We reviewed our database for data from 1994 to 1998 and selected 360 consecutive patients working in healthcare environments and experiencing contact dermatitis at their hands, wrists and forearms. The isolation and identification of the photodegradation products of clomipramine (CIP) in phosphate buffered saline (PBS pH 7.4 and 6.0) solution and methanol under aerobic conditions were studied. The effect of a protective cream was tested in a new tandem repeated irritation test with tandem application of 0.5% sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS) and undiluted toluene. This is a study of occupational skin disease among military personnel and conscripts in Singapore. All military personnel and conscripts diagnosed with occupational dermatoses in the National Skin Centre, Singapore, between 1989-1999 were studied retrospectively. Conscripts and regulars comprised 7.3% of all occupational skin disease patients seen. All were male, with a mean age of 23 years. The frequencies of contact allergic reactions to 2 fine fragrances were studied by patch testing. Further, a comparison was made of test results before and after evaporation of the solvent. A total of 480 consecutive eczema patients were included, 100 in the Dortmund clinic and 380 in the Gentofte clinic. Patch testing was done with 2 international brand prestige fragrances. Each fragrance was tested in duplicate. One was applied immediately and the other was allowed to dry for 5 min before application. Testing procedures and assessment of reactions followed the international recommendations.
