The frequencies of contact allergic reactions to 2 fine fragrances were studied by patch testing. Further, a comparison was made of test results before and after evaporation of the solvent. A total of 480 consecutive eczema patients were included, 100 in the Dortmund clinic and 380 in the Gentofte clinic. Patch testing was done with 2 international brand prestige fragrances. Each fragrance was tested in duplicate. One was applied immediately and the other was allowed to dry for 5 min before application. Testing procedures and assessment of reactions followed the international recommendations.

Treating patients with multiple allergies to cosmetic products is a difficult proposition. Many of these patients may simply be experiencing irritant contact dermatitis. Others may have defective barrier function caused by a dermatitis that requires treatment. And some patients with sensitive skin need to exercise care in choosing which products they use on their skin. For many of these patients, products with the fewest ingredients work best because they contain the least or no sensitizers, irritants, or cutaneous sensory stimulants.

Hand eczema and contact allergy in Swedish dentists were studied in a multidisciplinary project. The aims of the study were to establish diagnoses, to investigate the occurrence of contact allergy, in particular to (meth)acrylates, and to evaluate certain consequences of hand eczema. A postal questionnaire on skin symptoms, atopy and occupational experience was mailed to 3,500 dentists aged <65 years, and licensed 1965-1995. The response rate was 88%. In a retrospective epidemiologic study of 202 patients with eczematous cheilitis attending a patch test clinic, females (182 (90%)) predominated over males (20 (10%)). BACKGROUND: Cutaneous infections induced by Malassezia ovalis (Pityrosporum ovale) represent a therapeutic problem due to the high rate of recurrence.
OBJECTIVE: We studied feasible strategies to control the growth of M. ovalis, compatible with topical use in cosmetic formulations. Studies were performed on the effects of pH, ionic strength, cinnamic acid and related compounds on mycotic growth.

BACKGROUND: The combination of methyldibromoglutaronitrile (MDBGN) and phenoxyethanol (PE) is widely used as a preservative in body care products. Sensitization rates to MDBGN have increased parallel to its increasing use in cosmetics, skin care products, and moist toilet paper since the early 1990s, whereas PE is obviously not a sensitizer. Since February 1993 the EPIDERM surveillance scheme has collected data on occupational skin disease from consultant dermatologists in the UK. Reporting by occupational physicians to the scheme began in May 1994 and was superseded in January 1996 by the Occupational Physicians Reporting Activity (OPRA). Results of patch tests in 337 children aged 1 to 15 performed in our paediatric unit during the past 3 years have been analysed retrospectively in order to optimize the patch test series and to assess their relevance. This study represents the most important single-centre study reported so far over a short period. In a 2-year period, 1527 patients with contact dermatitis were investigated in the patch-test clinic.
